Greektown Chicago Tour With Greek Food and Wine Tasting: Check Artopolis Bakery & More

UPDATED with Interview of Artopolis Bakery Owner!!!

In this video, we take you on a tour of Greektown Chicago, with a tasting of the Artopolis bakery specialties and greek wine.

Staying close to Chicago Greektown for two months during the pandemic, we took the opportunity to tour Greektown and travel through local food.

Greektown is a business and cultural district in Chicago running along Halsted between Madison and Van Buren streets.

The Greek community started moving to Chicago in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

On this Greektown tour, discover the long-standing restaurants including Greek Islands, Santorini, Athena, and Nine Muses opened since the early '70s.

From Greece they select and ship to their restaurants the highest quality extra virgin olive oil, superior wines, the best cheeses, herbs, and seafood.

You will also find quick-service spots like Mr. Greek Gyros and Zeus Restaurant.

As well as our favorite Greek bakery, cafe and grocery:
Artopolis Bakery & Cafe

Address: 306 S Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60661
Hours: Everyday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm
[ Due to Covid, hours might have changed. Please check directly at the restaurant for up to date opening hours!]

Fun fact, in 1968, gyros and saganaki (flaming cheese) were introduced in this country by Chicago’s Greektown.

Today, we picked up Artopitas, the signature savory Greek Pastries from Artopolis and Greek wine Amethystos.

This is Claire and Rosemary from Authentic Food Quest on a quest to experience local culture through food.

Artopitas are puff-pastry or hand crafted savory pies filled with various fillings and greek ingredients like spinach, feta cheese, chicken, mushrooms, etc.

The Amethystos wine is a red wine blend (Cabernet 70%, Merlot 20% and Agiorgitiko 10%) from the Drama region, an up and coming Greek wine region.

This Greek wine is from Costas Lazarides, the region's first winery (1992).

If you want a taste of Greektown Chicago, here are 3 main events to check out:
Greek Independence Parade (April/May)
Easter
Taste of Greektown festival (typically in August, scaled back due to Covid)

Check Greektown Chicago for more information and resources:

We hope you enjoyed this virtual tour of Greektown. If you enjoyed this, please let us know in the comment below!

Thank you for watching.

And thank you to George Reveliotis and Artopolis Bakery for having us!

It's Friday night! The epic quest to making Chicago Hot Dogs!!

A proper Chicago dog is an all-beef frankfurter (such as Vienna Beef) in a poppy seed bun, topped with yellow mustard, neon-green sweet pickle relish, chopped white onion, tomato slices, a dill pickle spear, pickled sport peppers and celery salt.

It may not have been perfect, but it was heck'A good!

Dining in a bank VAULT: unusual Bedford restaurant in Chicago

When it comes to unique dining experiences and restaurants or cafes with extraordinary interior, exterior and menu choices, the American restaurant industry has one of the most exquisite assortments out there.

The Bedford elite supper club is a great example of a unique and unusual American restaurant. It is set in Chicago, in a reclaimed 1920s bank/financial institution, where the 6,000 working copper lock boxes and a massive vault room create an incredible atmosphere for the visitors.

You may visit the Bedford, which is located in Chicago’s Wicker Park and pick a table on a massive 8,000-square foot (743 sq. m) lower-level space, where all luxury materials, molds and bank decorations have been either preserved or restored.

If you are interested in finding out about other incredible places for gastronomic tourism or unusual cafes/restraurants, please check out this interactive video presentation:

The video that we have put together has information about such cool places to eat:

- Finnish Lumilinna restaurant, which is located in a chilly snow castle (Kemi);

- unbelievable waterfall restaurant in Labassin (Philippines);

Chicago Food Planet Tours Featured on ABC7's Hungry Hound with Food Reporter Steve Dolinsky

According to Hungry Hound Steve Dolinsky from ABC7 News: Chicago Food Planet Tours do much more than just take guests into restaurants. They talk about local history and culture as well. We tagged along on a recent tour and discovered some things about an area even we thought we knew everything about. Chicago is full of tour operators. But the Chicago Food Planet operates a little bit differently. Because when you decide to go on one of their three-hour tours, you'll not only be fed, but educated as well.
