Traveling for $20 A Day: Shanghai, China - Ep 1

We traveled to Shanghai, China and visited People's Square, ate delicious Chinese street food all day and booked a room in a hostel - all for less than 20 dollars (130 RMB)!

This is the FIRST EPISODE of the Traveling for 20 Dollars a Day series. We now have visited citied all over Asia - including Bangkok, Beijing, Taipei, Phnom Penh, Saigon, and so many more! Check out my channel to follow the adventure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cost to travel Shanghai for the day:

Meals:
For breakfast, I bought two baozi buns for 3 RMB (1.5 RMB apiece). After that, I bought pineapple on a stick from a roadside vendor for 5 RMB.

For lunch, I ate at Yang’s Fried Dumplings, a famous chain that serves up amazing Sheng Jian Bao. That meal cost me 8 RMB.

For dinner, I ate YangZhou fried rice (18 RMB) and had a beer (12 RMB), which totaled out to 30 RMB.

Transportation:
As far as transportation goes, the underground public transit system (the Metro) is connected to virtually every part of the city and you can travel from one end of the city to another for less than a dollar. Throughout the day, I only spent 6 RMB ($1) on transportation!

Accommodation:
A standard dorm room bed at the Shanghai City Central Youth Hostel cost me 70 RMB.

Total cost today:
123 RMB ($19)

1. Khao Soi ข้าวซอย

Easily one of the most famous and tastiest northern Thai dishes is khao soi - a bowl of usually egg noodles topped with a spice flavored coconut milk based curry sauce. It’s something you can’t miss when you’re in Chiang Mai!

BANGKOK TRIP EXPENSES - TICKET, TOUR, FOOD & TRANSPO | FILIPINO TOURIST | Thailand Series

Sharing my 4 days and 3 nights itinerary in Bangkok. To be honest, I have spent a bit much on transportation. You can actually save on transportation if you use their train stations but because it was more convenient for us to ride on a tuktuk or grab, we opted for them as we can take a tuktuk/grab anywhere or wherever we were in Bangkok.

With regards to the tuktuk, we really did not know what's the usual fare in tuktuk but everytime we ride on a tuktuk, regardless of distance, we were asked to pay 300 Thai Baht and I just keep on haggling until they lower the fare but we can only lower it from 170-250 baht. I'm not sure but I guess they have a different fee for tourists. Anyway, we did enjoy thouhg riding on a tuktuk. But we only rode on a tuktuk during the night so it won't be very hot. And we took either grab or taxi at daytime. With grab, there are times too that they cancel our booking because of either traffic or too far from our pick up point; therefore, we either took a taxi or tuktuk and pay a little more compared to grab.

You can spend way lesser than what I spent in Bangok if you don't go on tours and just enjoy the city. But for me, I really went there to experience more of Bangkok; hence, I booked some tours before our Bangkok trip. :)

Bangkok to Chiang Mai - Vlog 138

Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Air Asia Flight FD 3441 - Vlog 138

A video documenting a journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in February 2017.

Parts of this video include:

0:04 Taxi to the airport
1:22 Checking in
4:00 Clearing security
5:11 Starbucks pitstop
6:04 Obligatory stewardess shots, this time from Nok Air
7:08 Western fast food franchises
7:40 Heading through the new terminal
8:49 Airplane footage
11:29 Don Mueang gate 54
13:08 Flight to Chiang Mai
16:32 Arriving at Chiang Mai Airport
18:04 Outro from the Crazy Horse Circus bar in Patong

Additional Notes:

There are many ways to get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, taking an overnight train or bus is cheap and normally interesting but this time I was on a tight schedule so chose to fly direct.

I only booked the ticket a couple of days beforehand and it was around the weekend so a one way ticket cost 2290 baht ($65). This was by far the most expensive internal flight I've taken in Thailand but it was with Air Asia who are probably the most reliable low cost carrier operating in Thailand.
