Chernivtsi | Towns and Cities

Chernivtsi is halfway between Kyiv and Bucharest, Krakow and Odesa. This city is said to be the secret capital of Europe. It was ruled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire for over 100 years, after which luxurious architecture and the atmosphere of old Europe still remain. We have covered a distance of 600 km and are (already) met in this famous city of Bukovyna.

Ukraine's hidden gem, Chernivtsi | Budget Travel

As we only have 30 days in Ukraine (Tourist visa), we thought it would be nice to branch out of the main touristy cities in Ukraine and experience true Ukraine. We decided on the small town of Chernivtsi which is close to the border of Ukraine, Moldova and Romania.

I had read up about a few of the attractions do see before our 4-hour train journey here from Lviv and the main attraction here was the beautiful university!

We arrived at 10:30pm at night with a dead camera battery, no SIM card and not knowing a single word of the Ukrainian language. Our Airbnb was approximately a half an hour walk uphill from the train station and we had no clue what to do.
We sat on the side of the road deciding our best option to get to the Airbnb as a Taxi pull over on the opposite side of the road. Louise has her reservations around taxi's in foreign countries (rightly so) but after a bit of convincing I managed to win her over and we hailed him down.
He didn't speak any English so we couldn't exactly tell him where to go but I had saved the location on my phone and kind of showed him the street. After a short drive, we got to our Airbnb and just crashed!

The next day our first stop is getting some brunch, I was craving a coffee and scoped out a Caffe that had vego options for Louise called BUCO Coffee - The food was fantastic, the coffee blew my mind and the staff spoke English! This hit the day off on a high for our next stop.

A short walk later and we made it to Chernivtsi University which had a small park out the front, loaded with friendly stray dogs. The architecture of this building is amazing! It's a university that I would love to go to every day to study. Walking into the central building you'll be greeted by security who will ask if you need help. If you tell them you're here visiting they'll tell you, you need to pay a fee. We chose not to and just admired the university from the front and decided to walk around the back of the university as Google maps showed us some parklands.

The university grounds are quite large so getting to the back of it took us a while but once we got t the back we saw some squirrels out the front of what we thought was some sort of administration building. There are no squirrels in Australia so we thought we would grab some photos but were greeted by a Ukrainian man who looked semi-official. We thought we were getting in trouble but turns out he was asking us to enter his museum (The administration looking building).
The museum employee didn't speak any English so it was difficult to understand what he was asking us to do but he showed us around and then asked us to get some photos.

The next stop was lunch at Newyork Pizza which surprisingly served sushi as well as pizza and pasta, the pizza sizes were humungous in which the video doesn't do it justice but it was super cheap which is what we're all about.
After walking through the city centre we had discovered that Chernivtsi was a city filled with beautiful churches so we scoped out some of our favourites to get some shots, before heading home.

If you visit Chernivtsi, I would definitely recommend hanging around the town hall at 12:00 noon to hear a man play an old Bukovinian tune.
It's said that he climbs to the top of the tower every single day to play this tune and has done it for 35 years!

Chernivtsi: Little Vienna in Western Ukraine

Chernivtsi is a city in Western Ukraine with a large architectural and cultural heritage from the times of the Habsburg Empire. Back then known by its German name Czernowitz, the city began to flourish in the late 18th century. The German language became the lingua franca due to the influence of the Habsburgs and the large Jewish population. Chernivtsi was the capital of Bukovina - a region covering parts of present southwestern Ukraine and northeastern Romania. Literary figures including the late 19th-century novelist, travel writer and journalist Karl Emil Franzos published their works about the city and the region in German.

The architectural heritage of the city is very well preserved. Most of the buildings in the city center originate from the late 19th and early 20th century, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire built beautiful houses that resembled the architectural styles of contemporary buildings in Vienna - mainly Art Nouveau style.

Chernivtsi also became a center of both Romanian and Ukrainian national movements. It became part of Romania after 1918. The large mainly German and Yiddish-speaking Jewish population of the city perished during W W II. From 1945 to 1991, Chernivtsi was part of the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union. During that time, the architectural heritage suffered greatly from decay and neglect. In 1991, Chernivtsi became part of present Ukraine.

In recent years, many of the once dilapidated buildings in the city center have been restored. Today, Chernivtsi is a colorful city with a rich architectural and cultural heritage.

CHERNIVTSI, UKRAINE (4K City Tour) Stunning Aerial, Drone, Night, and Walking Tour 4K Footage

CHERNIVTSI, UKRAINE (4K City Tour) features spectacular aerial, walking, and drone video footage shot in the night and day, great for travel, visit, vacation, and tourism planning set to original music. Chernivtsi is a city in western Ukraine. It is situated on the upper course of the Prut River, and is the administrative center of Chernivtsi Oblast (province), which includes the Ukrainian part of Bukovina. Chernivtsi is also the administrative center of Chernivtsi Raion and hosts the administration of the Chernivtsi urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. At the time of the 2001 Ukrainian Census, the population of the city was 240,600. The current population is 265,471 (2021 est.).

Chernivtsi is viewed as one of Western Ukraine's main cultural centers. The city is also considered one of Ukraine's important educational and architectural sites. Inhabited by Early Slavic tribes since the 2nd or 5th century AD, the area in which present-day Chernivtsi is located became part of Kievan Rus' in the 9th-11th century. Chernivtsi was also part, for almost four centuries, of the Principality of Moldavia. Located on the border with Poland, the city flourished enjoying a high degree of autonomy. The city, along with the rest of Moldavia, came under Turkish control in 1538, and was later devastated by the Russo-Turkish War. Russians and Swedes pillaged the city, which by 1762 had shrunk to a settlement of hardly 200 wooden buildings and about a thousand inhabitants. After passing to Austria in 1775, the city's population, economy and architectural landscape grew exponentially. Historically a cosmopolitan community, Chernivtsi was once dubbed Little Vienna and Jerusalem upon the Prut. Chernivtsi is twinned with seven other cities around the world. The city is a major regional rail and road transportation hub, also housing an international airport.
