The Aragonese Castle on the island of Ischia, Italy, walking tour in 4k - Summer paradise

Ischia, Castello Aragonese, Italy walking tour in 4k. Summer time.

Hi my friends!!! Welcome to Ischia!.

Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the city of Naples.

???? BEST HOTELS where to stay in Ischia ????

It is the largest of the Phlegrean Islands. It has about 34 km (21 miles) of coastline and a surface area of 46.3 square kilometres (17.9 sq mi). It is almost entirely mountainous; the highest peak is Mount Epomeo, at 788 metres (2,585 feet).

In this video I will take you to the Aragonese Castle.

The Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese, Ischia Ponte) was built on a rock near the island in 474 BC, by Hiero I of Syracuse. At the same time, two towers were built to control enemy fleets' movements. The rock was then occupied by Parthenopeans (the ancient inhabitants of Naples). In 326 BC the fortress was captured by Romans, and then again by the Parthenopeans. In 1441 Alfonso V of Aragon connected the rock to the island with a stone bridge instead of the prior wood bridge, and fortified the walls in order to defend the inhabitants against the raids of pirates. Around 1700, about 2000 families lived on the islet, including a Poor Clares convent, an abbey of Basilian monks (of the Greek Orthodox Church), the bishop and the seminar, and the prince, with a military garrison. There were also thirteen churches.

???? Best Tours in Italy ????

Today the castle is the most visited monument of the island. It is accessed through a tunnel with large openings which let the light enter. Along the tunnel there is a small chapel consecrated to Saint John Joseph of the Cross (San Giovan Giuseppe della Croce), the patron saint of the island.

A more comfortable access is also possible with a modern lift. After arriving outside, it is possible to visit the Church of the Immacolata and the Cathedral of Assunta. The first was built in 1737 on the location of a smaller chapel dedicated to Saint Francis, and closed after the suppression of convents in 1806, as well as the Poor Clares convent.

Tickets to visit Castello Aragonese cost €12 for adults. You can buy your tickets at the ticket office at the entrance, straight after going through the arch at the end of the bridge.

There are two cafe/restaurants inside the castle , one in a garden setting near the Church of the Immaculate Conception and another at the highest publicly-accessible point of the castle. Both are rather pricey for both food and drink.

There’s a hotel inside Castello Aragonese, Albergo Il Monastero is a 3 star hotel. Many of the rooms have sea views or views over Ischia Ponte, and the photos of the views at sunset look incredible. You can book here

CASTELLO ARAGONESE WALK 2023 IN 4K

I have always been fascinated by castles, from my childhood and the Robin Hood movies all the way to the present. This castle is unlike any other with its majestic position atop the island of rock which provides its foundation. What strikes me about the Aragonese Castle is that you can't tell where the stone of the castle ends and the rock begins. It is unique in design and location. The hours spent there exploring the tunnels and passageways were unforgettable, and this walking video will bring back memories to us for years to come.
I hope you enjoy the twists and turns of this little excursion into the history of this island fortress. It was definitely a highlight of our Italy holiday.
I would again like to express my gratitude to @StillWanderer for his generous permission to use some of his drone shots for my intro/extro. His walking videos through the many hilltop villages and towns of Italy are spectacularly beautiful and inspirational. In his videos you will find the true Italy.
In the meantime, welcome to the Castello Aragonese d'Ischia!
