Cartagena de Indias, oficialmente Distrito Turístico y Cultural de Cartagena de Indias abreviado Cartagena de Indias, D. T. y C., es la capital del departamento de Bolívar, al norte de Colombia. Fue fundada el 1 de junio de 1533 por Pedro de Heredia. Desde 1991 Cartagena es un Distrito Turístico y Cultural. La ciudad está localizada a orillas del mar Caribe.
A partir de su fundación en el siglo xvi y durante toda la época virreinal española, Cartagena de Indias fue uno de los puertos más importantes de la América española. De esta época procede la mayor parte de su patrimonio artístico y cultural. El 11 de noviembre de 1811, Cartagena se declaró independiente de España. Este día es fiesta nacional en Colombia y en la ciudad se celebra durante cuatro días conocidos como las Fiestas de Independencia.
Cartagena ha sido una ciudad presente en medio de conflictos bélicos como también en la piratería, pues fue aquí donde se produjeron numerosos ataques por parte de los piratas y corsarios provenientes de Europa, lo cual supuso que fuera fuertemente amurallada y fortificada durante la administración española, hasta el punto de ser la fortaleza más robusta de América del Sur y del Caribe, llegando a estar casi tan reforzada como el mismo Golfo de México en su época. En la actualidad se mantiene su arquitectura virreinal.
Con el paso del tiempo, Cartagena ha desarrollado su zona urbana conservando el centro histórico y convirtiéndose en uno de los puertos de mayor importancia de Colombia, del Caribe y del mundo, así como un célebre destino turístico. La población total de su cabecera es de 914 552 habitantes, siendo el quinto municipio más poblado del país. Su centro histórico, la «Ciudad Amurallada», fue declarado Patrimonio Nacional de Colombia en 1959 y por la Unesco Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1984. En el año 2007 su arquitectura militar fue galardonada como la cuarta maravilla de Colombia.

Cartagena , known in the colonial era as Cartagena de Indias , is a city and major port on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region. Founded in 1533, the city's strategic location between the Magdalena and Sinú Rivers gave it easy access to the interior of New Granada and made it a main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empire, establishing its importance by the early 1540s. During the colonial era it was a key port for the export of Peruvian silver to Spain and for the import of enslaved Africans under the asiento system. Cartagena de Indias, more commonly known as Cartagena or Cartagena, is a city of Colombia located in the department of Bolívar. Founded in the sixteenth century by Spanish settlers, the city served as an anchor for expanding their empire in South America. Cartagena is one of the most touristic cities of the country, but it is in full shift with the other big Colombian cities like Bogota or Medellin. Landing in Cartagena after crisscrossing the country, we could easily believe in another country: the population and atmosphere are not the same, the architecture is not the same either. Be that as it may, it's a must-see city in Colombia that reveals another side of the country. The historic city of Cartagena and its enclosure are classified as UNESCO heritage.

The city of Cartagena, known in the colonial era as Cartagena de Indias is a major port founded in 1533, located on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region. It was strategically located between the Magdalena and Sinú rivers and became the main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empire, establishing its importance by the early 1540s. During the colonial era it was a key port for the export of Peruvian silver to Spain and for the import of African slaves under the asiento system. It was defensible against pirate attacks in the Caribbean.[2] It is the capital of the Bolívar Department, and had a population 971,592 as of 2016. It is the fifth-largest city in Colombia and the second largest in the region, after Barranquilla. The urban area of Cartagena is also the fifth-largest urban area in the country. Economic activities include the maritime and petrochemicals industries, as well as tourism.
The city was founded on June 1, 1533, and named after Cartagena, Spain, which in turn was named after Carthage in Tunisia. Settlement in the region around Cartagena Bay by various indigenous people dates back to 4000 BC. During the Spanish colonial period Cartagena served a key role in administration and expansion of the Spanish empire. It was a center of political, ecclesiastical, and economic activity. In 1984, Cartagena's colonial walled city and fortress were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
