--- About the Carretera Austral in Patagonie ---
The Road number 7 connects the most remote areas of Chile and is one of the most beautiful roads in South America. It is an alternative road to the Panamericana which is located on the argentinean side of Patagonia.
Amongst Bikers and Cyclists this route is very popular due to the beautiful landscape even though the construction of the road was not done for tourism purpose.
In the 1970s there was a border conflict between Argentina and Chile in this part of Patagonia - the territories around the lago del desierto have not been clearly defined. Therefore Pinochet decided to build a road and populate the south of chile to claim the region and strengthen the position of Chile.
Nowadays the Carretera is a mostly unpaved road and is located in 2 regions of Chile: Region Los Lagos in the northern part of the road and Region Aysen in the south.

La Carretera Austral es uno de los mayores atractivos turísticos de Chile y nosotros tuvimos la suerte de poder recorrerla en auto en la totalidad de sus 1.247 Kilómetros.
Si te has preguntado en qué condiciones se encuentra actualmente la ruta y en qué tipo de vehículo puedes realizar el viaje, o si tienes curiosidad de ver un resumen de cómo son los impresionantes paisajes del sur de Chile, este video te puede servir.

Viaje realizado en el Verano de 2022, en un vehículo Hyundai Creta. La distancia total recorrida (ida y vuelta además de desvíos a varios atractivos turísticos) fue de 2997 Kmts. Se utilizaron 155 litros de bencina para un consumo promedio de unos 5.1 Litros por cada 100 Kmts (19.5 Kmts/lt).
Recuerda que si deseas realizar el tramo en temporada alta hay que reservar con anticipación las estadías, pero sobre todo los viajes en ferry. También recuerda planificar tu viaje con mucha holgura, ya que, como dicen, en el Sur el que se apura pierde su tiempo.

Ruta Austral de Chile - Parte 1- Futaleufú a Chaiten y hasta Puyuhuapi -Naturaleza de la Patagonia
Recorriendo la laguna La Paz, el lago Espolón, el lago Lonconao, el Puente La Dificultad, el Parque Pumalín, el lago Yelcho, el Parque Corcovado y terminando en el Fiordo de Puyuhuapi como inicio del viaje por la Ruta Austral de Chile.
Quinta parte de un viaje por la Patagonia con 11000 kilómetros recorridos y 45 días de duración, donde intente documentar las rutas, los paisajes, los animales y tantas otras cosas que fueron apareciendo durante el camino.
Después de 3 años de haberlo planificado, es hoy una realidad.
Moviéndome con mi Citroën Berlingo donde duermo en los campings siempre que tengo la oportunidad.
Un Camino para conocer Lugares, para conocer Personas, para hacer Fotografía y Video, donde lo Importante no es el Destino, sino el mismo Viaje.

Recorriendo Puyuhuapi, la cuesta de Queulat, Puerto Aysen, pasar por Coyhaique y terminar en Villa Cerro Castillo, como segunda parte del viaje por la Ruta Austral de Chile.

Chile - Carretera Austral 4K
The Carretera Austral is the name given to Chile's Route 7. The highway runs south for about 1,240 kilometers from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins, passing through rural Patagonia.
Carretera Austral provides road access to Chile's Aysén Region and southern parts of Los Lagos Region. These areas are sparsely populated and despite its length, Carretera Austral provides access to only about 100,000 people. The largest city along the entire road is Coyhaique with a population of 44,850 in 2002.

The Carretera Austral is a mostly unpaved road that connects the most rural part of Patagonia in the very south of Chile. Tourism in this area is not as pronounced as it is in other parts of the country, as regular bus routes, accommodations and detailed info is hard to find.
But in this seclusion lies the attraction and a special charm. During my last trip I met very few travelers from Europe and North America. The locals welcomed me warmly and most attractions were not crowded.
After traveling this route twice via hitchhiking I thought it is about time that I put together a handy Carretera Austral guide which highlights the main sights along this 1200km long road. The video shows you my favorite places to visit from north to south, starting in Puerto Montt and finishing in Villa O’Higgins.
To do the Ruta 7 properly I recommend about 2 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral:

Partimos el capítulo contando como ir por ferry desde hornopiren hasta caleta Gonzalo, pasamos por el parque pumalin, y nos perdimos en la ruta a futaleufú, fuimos a unas termas y te co ntamos datos y costos de la ruta 7 Carretera austral.
En este capítulo recorrimos desde Cochamó y Llegamos hasta Cerro castillo, en el siguiente capítulo se viene río tranquilo la visita a las catedrales de mármol y la caminata sobre el glaciar exploradores.

Ruta Austral 2023: Fin de la Carretera Austral Ruta-7 Tramo Chile Chico - Villa O'Higgins
Ya Luego de haber entrado a Chile Chico desde Argentina, comienza el tramo que nos quedo pendiente desde el 2018, llegar al fin de la carretera austral en Villa O´Higgins específicamente en Puerto Bahamondes.
Tomamos la Ruta 265, pasando por una vista maravillosa entra la cordillera y lago general Carrera. la tranquilidad y vistas dan ganas de quedarse ahí, pero debemos seguir, una vez pasado Puerto Guadal, ya nos topamos con la ultima cola del Lago General Carrera, y entramos a la conexión con la famosa Ruta 7 ó Carretera Austral, una pausa en Puerto Bertrand para hacer rafting en el río mas caudaloso de nuestro país: el Río Baker.
Punto que no dejamos pasar es la confluencia del Río Baker con el Río Nef, para luego llegar a dormir en Cochrane. La Patagonia entrega muchos tipos de paisajes en los que se puede apreciar pampa y bosque en un tramo, rutear junto al río Baker, para después desviarnos y llegar a Puerto Yungay y navegar unos 30 minutos para volver a conectar con la ruta a Villa O´higgins,
en este ultimo tramos puedes ver miradores, glaciares, cascadas y postales con cada metro de avance. Cruzado el Río Mayer nos indica que estamos llegando a nuestro destino final. Luego al día siguiente nos fuimos a Puerto Bahamondes, donde se encuentra el Hito del fin de la carretera austral, aprovechando el tiempo también se puede hacer diferentes circuitos, en mi caso hice un trekking de casi dos horas al mirador del valle, donde se tiene una maravillosa vista de la zona.
El viaje de carretera austral llega hasta aca, pero nuestro viaje continua con otra ruta fantástica: La Ruta del fin del Mundo.

Ruta Austral de Chile - Parte 3 - Cerro Castillo a Lago General Carrera - Naturaleza de la Patagonia
Recorriendo desde Villa Cerro Castillo hasta Puerto Rio Tranquilo, navegar por el monumento natural Capilla de Mármol en el Lago General Carrera y terminar en Chile Chico, como tercera parte del viaje por la Ruta Austral de Chile.
Septima parte de un viaje por la Patagonia con 11000 kilómetros recorridos y 45 días de duración, donde intente documentar las rutas, los paisajes, los animales y tantas otras cosas que fueron apareciendo durante el camino.
Después de 3 años de haberlo planificado, es hoy una realidad.
Moviéndome con mi Citroën Berlingo donde duermo en los campings siempre que tengo la oportunidad.
Un Camino para conocer Lugares, para conocer Personas, para hacer Fotografía y Video, donde lo Importante no es el Destino, sino el mismo Viaje.
