St. Lucia – The Caribbean’s Paradise

Saint Lucia (French: Sainte-Lucie) is a sovereign island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 km2 (238.23 sq. mi) and reported a population of 165,595 in the 2010 census. Saint Lucia was also known as the Helen of the West Indies and its capital is Castries.

On 22 February 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations associated with the United Kingdom. Saint Lucia is a mixed jurisdiction, meaning that it has a legal system based in part on both the civil law and English common law. The Civil Code of St. Lucia of 1867 was based on the Quebec Civil Code of 1866, as supplemented by English common law-style legislation.

+ For this Info:

The volcanic island of Saint Lucia is more mountainous than most Caribbean islands, with the highest point being Mount Gimie, at 950 metres (3,120 feet) above sea level. Two other mountains, the Pitons, form the island's most famous landmark. They are located between Soufrière and Choiseul on the western side of the island. Saint Lucia is also one of the few islands in the world that boasts a drive-in volcano.

Tourist attractions include a drive-in volcano, Sulphur Springs (in Soufrière), the Botanical Gardens, the Majestic twin Peaks The Pitons, a world heritage site, the rain forests, and Pigeon Island National Park, which is home to Fort Rodney, an old British military base. The majority of tourists visit Saint Lucia as part of a cruise. Most of their time tends to be spent in Castries, although Soufriere, Marigot Bay and Gros Islet are popular locations to visit.

About Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia is a sovereign island country in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. The island was previously called Iyonola, the name given to the island by the native Arawaks and later, Hewanorra, the name given by the native Caribs, two separate Amerindian peoples. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 km2 (238 square miles) and reported a population of 165,595 in the 2010 census. Its capital is Castries. The French were the first Europeans to settle on the island. They signed a treaty with the native Island Caribs in 1660. England took control of the island from 1663 to 1667. In ensuing years, it was at war with France fourteen times, and the rule of the island changed frequently (it was ruled seven times each by the French and British). In 1814, the British took definitive control of the island. Because it switched so often between British and French control, Saint Lucia was also known as the Helen of the West Indies after the Greek mythological character, Helen of Troy. Representative government came about in 1840 (universal suffrage was established in 1953). From 1958 to 1962, the island was a member of the West Indies Federation. On 22 February 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Saint Lucia is a mixed jurisdiction, meaning that it has a legal system based in part on both the civil law and English common law. The Civil Code of St. Lucia of 1867 was based on the Quebec Civil Code of 1866, as supplemented by English common law-style legislation. [Source: wikipedia // Google]

St. Lucia - Caribbean Island getaway

We're based at an all-inclusive vacation at La Toc Bay on the volcanic Caribbean island of St. Lucia with private plunge pools, golf, scuba diving and trips to the capital city, Castries and local markets. What makes this island special? Saint Lucia, one of the Windward Islands, is part of the Lesser Antilles and lies in the eastern Caribbean Sea. One of the more mountainous islands, it boasts a drive-in volcano, and spectacular scenery including views of The Pitons, two mountains that form the island's most famous landmark, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

St Lucia : Helene of the West Indies

Saint Lucia's iconic Pitons -- a pair of volcanic spires that vault upward from the Caribbean Sea -- define one of the region's most romantic destinations. Though the trademark vistas that surround the Pitons are perhaps the most memorable, Saint Lucia delivers robust, varied scenery from head to toe. Simply put, the island looks the way the Caribbean is supposed to look.

Caribbean | Windward Islands | St Lucia (Helen of the West Indies)

St Lucia was the 5th port of call on the Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival Glory.. The island's beauty has earned it the nickname Helen of the West Indies and I would consider this to be one of my favourite islands that we visited on our cruise.

The island is quite mountainous, owing to its volcanic features in particular the two peaks that rise from the sea- Gros Piton and Petit Piton (2,619ft and 2,461ft respectively).

St Lucia is still geologically active and boasts the world's only 'Drive-in' Volcano at La Soufriere, also known as the Sulphur Springs due to the multitude of thermal springs in the area- some are far to hot to bathe in, however nearby there is a bath house whereby the natural springs are at a more tolerable level, in addition you can also take a hot mud bath.

The beaches are not the usual crisp white sand you see in other Caribbean islands, but has more of a darker shade (black in places) due to the sand being based on volcanic rock.

To get around the can take quite some time despite its size as alot of the main roads circumnavigate the island, and to travel in land the roads are often quite steep and twisty due to the terrain. This can lead to some unexpected, spectacular views at times.

The island is mostly covered by a rich rain forrest, and due to the rainfall and fertile soil there is a large variety of plants and fruits that are grown on the island.

We did not book one of the Carnival excursions as the trips were too short and could not be combined to see what we wanted to see due to timings. Instead we booked a Scenic Tour of Sourfrier privately. On the day we had the advantage of having the entire minivan to ourselves as no-one else was booked on the tour, so in effect we had a 'private tour' as opposed to be herded round in large groups (of people I often find loud/annoying) as is normally the case on the cruise ship organised tours. Our driver 'Shan' was amazing and given the fact that we were the only people on the tour, also meant that we had individual tours at each of the destinations along with being able to spend more time in places to look around etc. He carried a cool box in the minivan which had complimentary refreshments for the day. While driving round Shan was fully of interesting insights relating to St Lucia and was happy to answer any questions. It all made for a very enjoyable day and to be honest I was sad to leave as I genuinely liked St Lucia as the people are warm and friendly and when walking around, you do not get harrassed by vendors as is normally the case with other Caribbean islands. It was a very relaxing place and definetly one I would return to for a longer stay.

During our time on St Lucia we were able to see:

- The Pitons (from a distance, as climbing them takes some experience)

- Toraille Waterfall (You can swim in the plunge pool - but the water is very cold!)

- Diamond Waterfall and Botanical Garden - Originally a sugar plantation, it has been transformed into a diverse botanical garden with fruits, nuts, flowers and trees from around the world growing here. There are independent tour guides who will take you on a tour of the garders our's (Alexander) was very knowledgeable and an interesting character! We had a lot of fun! There is also a natural spring bath here which is available for a small charge.

St Lucia has a mixture of French and British influences as it was fought for on many occasions in the past before finally becoming a British colony; though now independent since 22nd February 1979, it is still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations associated with the UK.

Napoleon Bonaparte's first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais was from St Lucia.

Saint Lucia - Caribbean Sea

Saint Lucia is an island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 620 km2 (238 sq mi) and has an estimated population of 160,000. Its capital is Castries. The island nation has been the home of two Nobel laureates, Arthur Lewis and Derek Walcott. It is the nation with the second most such honorees per capita after Faroe Islands.

One of the Windward Islands, it was named for Saint Lucy of Syracuse by the French, the first European colonizers. They signed a treaty with the native Carib peoples in 1660. Great Britain took control of the island from 1663 to 1667; in ensuing years, it was at war with France 14 times and rule of the island changed frequently (7 times French and British each). In 1814, the British took definitive control of the island. Because it switched so often between British and French control, Saint Lucia was also known as the Helen of the West Indies.

Saint Lucia has a legal system based on British common law. The judiciary is independent and conducts generally fair public trials. The financial sector has weathered the global financial crisis, but the recession has hurt tourism.

Representative government came about in 1924 (with universal adult suffrage from 1953). From 1958 to 1962 the island was a member of the Federation of the West Indies. Finally, on February 22, 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations. The island nation celebrates this every year with a public holiday. It is also a member of La Francophonie. ( source Wikipedia )

Leeward and Windward Islands of the Caribbean

From the Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, Caribbean. Stock footage available from
Transcript:
The British Leeward Islands once were all colonies, but today the only ones remaining under the Crown are Anguila and Montserrat. Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts, and Nevis are independent states.
Antigua draws yachtsmen from all over the world to take part in the famous Race Week sailboat races.
The French presence in the Caribbean began in Martinique, an island loved by the French painter Paul Gauguin before he ever saw Tahiti. It is a mountainous, volcanic island with a rough coastline that has dozens of coves and miles of secluded beaches. Gauguin's work here represented a break from impressionism, and was a prelude to his better known Tahitian work.
Martinique, like many of the Windward Islands, is remarkably fertile. Almost anything that touches the ground grows, and there is a bounty of tropical fruit and flowers that staggers the eye.
This lush natural beauty also abounds on Dominica and St. Lucia. Dominica is a large, undeveloped island of mountains and dense rain forest so rich that it contains many plants found in few other places in the world. It offers fabulous hiking trails through unspoiled jungle, lodges set in rain forest retreats, and a secluded preserve where the Caribbean's last remaining Carib Indians continue their traditional ways.
Rivers and waterfalls tumble from the mountains to the sea, and legend says there are 365 rivers here, one for each day of the year. Hot springs and geothermal lakes complete the picture of the region's most untamed island.
