Camino Portuguese Documentary: From Porto to Santiago de Compostela (Full Video)

In 2018, I walked the Camino Portuguese with my wife and 2-year old son. It was an incredible journey along the 150-mile path from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. We made friends along every stop, and enjoyed every moment of the Camino experience. I initially released this documentary in a five part series, but wanted to publish a single video for those not wanting to view each part separately.

We’re currently getting ready to return to Spain to walk the Camino Ingles this summer. Looking back on this pilgrimage from 2018, it’s amazing to see how much my son has grown in the last four years. We’re especially excited to walk the Ingles given the craziness of the last few years. I look forward to see some of you along the path to Santiago. Buen Camino!

Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela | 280 km in 10 days (Camino Portugués - Coastal route)

I decided to do a Camino from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. The physical and mental challenge, that was my motive to do the Camino. No smartphone, a map and a lot of human interaction. The experience was ultimately much greater than my initial motive. It all came down to human connection. The people I've met, the motives I've heard and the lessons I've learned. Connecting with people and their stories is extremely powerful and educational. My biggest takeaways: preparation and reflection are key, help each other and put things into perspective. I would recommend it to everyone!

Location: Porto, Vila do Conde, Esposende, Viana do Castelo, Caminha, Valença, Tui, Redondela, Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis, Padron, Santiago de Compostela

Camino de Santiago - The Portuguese Way

This is the story of our friends and family walking the Camino de Santiago (filmed in 4K) - along with more than 270,000 people who will walk the Camino in 2016. This is the sixth year that the group have followed the 'ways' of the Camino and it is the first year trekking the stunning Portuguese route to Santiago (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The five day trip covers 152km and starts in Porto in Northern Portugal and ends just over the Spanish border in the Galician town of O Porriño. Our most recent Camino to the ancient end of the world - Finisterre and Muxia click =

Stage 1 - PORTO TO VILARINHO - 26KM
Stage 2 - VILARINHO TO BARCELOS - 30KM
Stage 3 - BARCELOS – PONTE DE LIMA - 34KM
Stage 4 - PONTE DE LIMA - COSSOURADO - 28KM
Stage 5 - COSSOURADO - TUI - O PORRIÑO - 34KM

The Portuguese Way has a long history which can be seen in many of the buildings and architecture along the route. The city of Porto and the University of Coimbra are great examples of this and are both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is the second most popular Camino however, it´s less crowded than the Camino Francès. According to statistics from the Pilgrims office in Santiago, over 16% of those receiving the Compostela certificate walk the Camino Português - it is the fastest growing in popularity.

Dedicated to memory of our absent friends and family.

Camino de Santiago or Way of St. James - The Portuguese Way

We hiked walked for 5 days, the last 100km of The Portuguese Way, staying in a different little village/town each night. We started in Vigo Spain and finished at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia Spain - pilgrims have been walking these trails for over 1,000 years.

Portuguese Way Full Way, from Lisbon to Santiago | CaminoWays.com

The Portuguese Way or Caminho Portugués is a fantastic route for pilgrims looking for a more rural experience on the Camino de Santiago.

The Portuguese Way is a month-long journey if you decide to walk, a fortnight if you cycle it. We recommend cycling the first sections from Lisbon to Porto. The route starts in Lisbon, Portugal’s dazzling capital and home of several UNESCO sites, and takes pilgrims along stunning countryside, villages and towns such as Santarém, one of the last Moorish bastions in Portugal; Coimbra, famous for its UNESCO 13th century university; and gorgeous Porto with its colourful river front and home of Port wine. On the Portuguese Way route of the Camino de Santiago you will walk past terraced fields, lush forests vineyards and peaceful sleepy villages.

Once you will cross the border between Portugal and Spain you will start the last 100km from Tui, Galicia. Explore Tui’s beautiful old town, visit the hilltop cathedral and, if you have time before heading to Santiago de Compostela, walk across the 19th century International Bridge to Valença do Minho, its Portuguese ‘twin’ town.

About the Camino de Santiago

In the 9th century, the tomb of the apostle #StJames was unearthed in Compostela. The site became the focus of a #pilgrim trail beginning in France and crossing Northern Spain to #Santiago de Compostela.

While there are many different routes to Santiago de Compostela, the most well known of the Camino de Santiago walks (also known as the Compostela Trail or Way of St James) are in #Spain and #France. With so many options available it can be confusing for the modern day traveller to know exactly which one they should do.

#UTracks offers a multitude of #walking options along the most popular Camino de Santiago route in Spain, as well as the Camino Primitivo, the Original Way from Oviedo, the Camino del Norte, the English Way and the option to extend your journey to the Atlantic Coast from Santiago for those wishing to stay true to the pilgrim path.

We also offer Food Lovers' trips that include the walking and culinary Camino highlights, a Walk & Write #tour, where walkers write their way to Santiago de Compostela, and #hiking and cycling holidays on the Portuguese Camino and the French Way of St James. View Camino Food Lovers tours:

We recommend that you call our team to discuss your needs to ensure you choose the right self guided #tour or small group guided Camino walk for you.
