Camino Primitivo (Oviedo - Santiago de Compostela) [ CaminoWays.com

The Camino Primitivo or Original Way #caminoprimitivo is the oldest Camino route, first used by devout pilgrims from Asturias in the 9th Century, including King Alfonso II. The Original Way starts in the elegant city of Oviedo, home of El Salvador Cathedral, an important pilgrimage destination for many centuries. Across the mountains of Asturias, the trail takes pilgrims along peaceful tracks, mountain passes with magnificent views and quaint mountain villages. The first half of this Camino route can be challenging but the views are definitely worth the effort!

The city of Lugo marks the half-way point of the Camino Primitivo. The city famous for its impressive UNESCO-listed Roman wall, and for being one of the best places to eat in Galicia. After Lugo, the Camino Primitivo takes pilgrims on an old Roman paved road, crossing quiet hamlets, woodland and unique medieval bridges. The Original Way joins the most famous Camino route, the Camino Francés, in the lively market town of Melide.

The Camino Primitivo in Asturias, The Original Way of St James (España - Spain) - Where is Asturias

The route of St. James is one of the largest spiritual, cultural and religious events to take place throughout the history of humanity attracting pilgrims from all over the world to make their way to Santiago de Compostela, the final resting place of the apostle St. James. There are two of routes or ways that pass through the region of Asturias... one is the northern coastal route and the other is El Camino Primitivo or the original way, said to be the very first pilgrimage ever made to Santago.

During the 9th century, while holding court in Oviedo, King Alphonse the chaste set out on a journey to Galicia in the north-west of the peninsula in order to confirm the discovery of the remains of the apostle St. James. On confirmation that the discovery was indeed St. James, King Alphonse ordered the construction of a basilica to store the saints remains and since then the route between Oviedo and Santago de Compostella has become one of first and most important Christian pilgramages in the world. This original way starts in the Asturian capital of Oviedo passing through Las Regueras, Grado, Tineo, Pola de Allande and Grandas de Salime where the route then enters the province of Lugo in Galicia finally finishing at Santago de Compostella.

The Camino Primitivo, or Original Way, is a stunning and isolated trek through Galicia from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela.

It is one of the most beautiful, challenging, and rewarding routes on the Camino de Santiago. It crosses a mountain range, climbing to 1100m above sea level. It’s well worth the climb for the spectacular views of the Embalse de Salime, the River Navia, and of course the towering surrounding mountains.

Camino Primitivo (Lugo - Santiago) | CaminoWays.com

The last stretch of the Original Way or Camino Primitivo #caminoprimitivo is much easier than the first half, from Oviedo. This stage starts in the fantastic city of Lugo, home to the best preserved Roman wall in Europe, stretching over 2kms wrapped around the old town. Apart from its famous wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lugo is also known for its good food. Many bars in town will serve free ‘pinchos’ when you order a drink.

From Lugo, the Camino Primitivo continues towards Santiago de Compostela across peaceful forests and farmland, following old Roman paved roads and over pretty medieval bridges. This section joins the final stretch of the French Way, the most popular Camino route, in the lively town of Melide where you should try Galicia’s most classic dish: octopus. If you are travelling in October, make sure you catch the traditional San Froilán festival in Lugo.

CAMINO PRIMITIVO 2021 | From Oviedo to Santiago in 9 Days

Discovering the Camino Primitivo: nature, calmness, and nice people. 13 stages in 9 days, through mountains, villages, and forests.
It was quite challenging. I walked mainly alone, 321 km in 9 days, through Ruta de Hospitales.
I started on the 9th of September and I half improvised where I'd finish the day. Stayed at public and private hostels.
Luckily, it was mostly sunny.

Just some photos in remembrance* of my Camino from Irun to Santiago de Compostela (and further to Fisterra, Muxia and then extended to Camino Primitivo from Oviedo to SdC) in 2014. This is part 2/3

- part 1) Camino del Norte: IRUN to Santiago de Compostela
- part 2) Fisterra, Muxia (with trip to The little Fox House and A Coruna.
- part 3) Camino Primitivo: Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela

thanks & buen camino! :-)

* In 2013 I started my first backpacking tour, starting from Italy (Genoa), then a few days from Arles in the Cammargue, France, and so I came to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, from where I went all the way to Santiago de Compostela and then finally to Fisterra and Muxia. But without a camera, so no photos from my 1st Camino. ;-);

The Camino Primitivo begins in the city of Oviedo, the capital of the Asturias region. From there, it travels through the rugged mountains of the Picos de Europa and the forests of Galicia before arriving in Santiago de Compostela. The route is approximately 325 kilometers long and typically takes about two weeks to complete.

Along the way, pilgrims can experience the beautiful landscapes and rich cultural heritage of northern Spain. They will pass through charming towns and villages, with plenty of opportunities to sample the local cuisine and meet other pilgrims.

The Camino Primitivo is a physically demanding route and requires a good level of fitness. However, the sense of accomplishment and spiritual fulfillment that comes from completing the journey makes it a rewarding experience for those who are up to the challenge.

Camino Primitivo | Oviedo - Santiago

The Camino Primitivo, or the Original Way, is a 321 km pilgrimage through Northern Spain, starting in Oviedo and finishing at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

It’s considered to be the toughest out of all Camino de Santiago routes due to its many steep ascents and descents.

It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Northern Way – Full Walk: The Northern Way or Camino del Norte is the Camino route that follows the Northern coast of ‘Green Spain’ from San Sebastián in the Basque Country, to Cantabria, Asturias and finally Ribadeo in Galicia.

Camino Primitivo, the original route to Santiago in 100 ????

This video provides a 5-minute impression of the Camino Primitivo through 100 photos taken during the special hike in March 2022.

The Camino Primitivo, or literally the first road, is a great opportunity to discover the origin of the pilgrimage. Starting from the cathedral of Oviedo, you walk through Asturias to the fortified city of Lugo in Galicia. From Lugo, you walk to the village of Melide, where the route joins with the Camino Francés for the last 55 km to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The route crosses 250 km through sparsely populated mountain areas, with exceptional nature and mainly through paths and unpaved roads, which certainly contributes to the peace and scenic beauty.

Along the way, you'll also encounter a lot of historical heritage, especially in the three monumental cities of Oviedo, Lugo, and of course Santiago de Compostela itself. It is therefore probably one of the most beautiful pilgrim routes.

If you want to stay up-to-date and see the latest videos of walking tours, subscribe to this channel.

More information about the trip and route is available on the website of Luz Verde.

Nederlands:
