As a rule, two trains are coupled together until Zweilütschinen, where they are separated. One train travels onwards to Grindelwald, and the other to Lauterbrunnen. Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Murren, and Gimmelwald are one of the most beautiful villages of Switzerland, situated in the Bernese Overland region. The latter is immensely surrounded by the mountains and glaciers. To reach these villages as well as for going to Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe, one needs to board Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB) from Interlaken Ost station (if one is not traveling by car or walking/hiking). BOB Railway is a narrow-gauge mountain railway that runs only in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. This Railway, with its blue-yellow trains, opens up the Lütschinen valleys and connects Interlaken, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen villages.

This Wengernalpbahn (WAB) railway train covers more than 1000m elevation difference during this journey. At the Grindelwald Grund station, notice a change in the direction of train journey. The Kleine Scheidegg is located directly at the foot of Eiger North Face. It is the watershed between the two Lütschinen valleys. It is a popular starting point for the Jungfrau train to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe station, the highest train station of Europe. This hiking paradise can be reached from Grindelwald, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen villages via Wengernalp railway trains or via hiking from these villages. It offers a walking area surrounded by timeless beauty at the foot of the mighty Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, trio mountains located in the Jungfrau region of Swiss Alps. Along high-altitude footpaths, one can walk/hike to Mannlichen (90 minutes; Easy hike) or to Eigergletscher.

Happy Swiss national day!
Today we're on a picturesque line along the lake of Thun, between Spiez and Interlaken. Interlaken is a popular tourist destination in Switzerland. The name literally means between the lakes as it is situated between the lake of Thun and the Brienz lake. The normal gauge network ends there and narrow gauge railways continue on to various locations in the alps. We've been on this line before, on a longer journey from Vallorbe to Interlaken:
Since then, the 3 stations between Interlaken and Spiez have unfortunately been closed to passenger traffic and are served by buses instead. Here is a video showing the old BLS rolling stock stopping along the line: ( and also the regional freight train (which no longer serves Interlaken):
On a side note, there used to be a narrow gauge line on the other side of the lake, providing a link to the Beatenberg funicular. It resembled a tramway and also connected Thun to Interlaken, with a further line in Thun to Steffisburg. The line was different to this one in that it had to gain 60 metres in elevation due to the terrain along the lake.
As cars gained popularity, the railway lost passengers and slowed traffic due to the fact that it often shared the road with them. By 1952, the trains were replaced by trolleybuses, after just 38 years of operation. The line between Interlaken and Beatenbucht was already closed in 1939.
