Paphos (Greek: Pafos) is a coastal city in the southwest of Cyprus and the capital of Paphos District. The town of Paphos is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of the world's heritage.
The remains of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs of the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods mean that the site is of exceptional architectural and historic value.
Archaeologists report that the site of Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. It was a centre of the cult of Aphrodite and of pre-Hellenic fertility deities. Aphrodite's mythical birthplace was on this island, where her temple was erected by the Myceneans in the 12th century BC.
New Paphos (Nea Pafos), the currently inhabited town, lays about 12 km northwest of the old city Paphos, which now is the archaeological site of Palaepaphos, Kouklia.
The economy of Paphos depends largely on tourism and there are four resorts in the district: Kato Paphos, Coral Bay, Latchi, and Aphrodite Hills. The largest by far is Kato Paphos which employs over half of Paphos' population. Farming, especially banana, grape and tobacco cultivation, also contributes significantly to the economy of Paphos.
Paphos enjoys a subtropical-Mediterranean climate, with the mildest temperatures on the island. The greatest amounts of precipitation mainly occur from mid-November to March. It almost never rains in the summer. In July and August, humidity measurements can go up to 85%.

Paphos Castle was originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour. It was then rebuilt by the Lusignans in the thirteenth century after being destroyed in the earthquake of 1222. In 1570 it was dismantled by the Venetians. After capturing the island, the Ottomans restored and strengthened it. Throughout the ages it has seen many uses. It has served as a fortress, a prison and even a warehouse for salt during the British occupation of the island. More recently the castle serves as a backdrop to the annual open air Paphos cultural festival which takes place in September.

Paphos embankment walking is miniature, everywhere you will find a stall with local goods, whether it offers sweets or souvenirs. Markets alternate with restaurants. The city embankment is not big, but the walking path continues further for 12 kilometers along the sea and all the hotels.
1:03 Paphos Archaeological Park represents remains of ancient city of Neo-Paphos founded by the Ancient Greeks. The city was entirely destroyed by earthquakes in the 4th century AD. Particularly valuable are the well-preserved mosaics of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. They are in the house of Dionysus, which belonged to a wealthy Roman citizen and in the house of a Roman proconsul. Also in the park is a fortress of the Crusaders Saranta Kolones.

7:02 Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis 2 kilometers from Paphos. The name derives from the splendor and decoration of the tombs, as there are in fact no kings buried in them. From the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD, the crypts of the local aristocracy and high officials of ancient Paphos were located here.
Underground tombs were carved directly into the rock. Some of them imitate an ordinary house, while others are more like small palaces with their columned halls, frescoes and courtyards.
8:34 Shipwrecks: Edro III and Demetrios II. In December 2011, Edro III left Limassol in bad weather and headed for Rhodes with a load of drywall. At nightfall, strong winds and rough seas knocked the ship off its course. The vessel ran into underwater reefs 10 miles away from the coast, the engine failed and the cargo ship became uncontrollable. Edro III drifted like this all night, until, she was thrown onto the rocks in Paphos. Edro III will forever lie here, attracting tourists to the nearby Oniro By The Sea cafe.
10:38 Demetrios II ship was sailing with a cargo of timber from Greece to Syria. During heavy seas, the vessel ran aground 1 km away from the coast, where she has been to this day since 1998.
11:21 Aphrodite's Birthplace. Aphrodite was born from the waves and foam of the sea beating against this rock. In ancient times, the main center of worship of Aphrodite was in Paphos. Later, the Romans also called her Venus. According to another version, Aphrodite was born near Kithira island, when the god Uranus was cut by his son Kronos. The body of Uranus fell into the sea and the water began to foam. Suddenly, the most beautiful maiden came up from the foam and appeared on the surface.
The present name of Aphrodite’s rock is Petra tou Romiou, which means Rock of the Romans. It refers to the legend of a hero of the Eastern Roman Empire Digenes Akritas. Digenes threw down a huge stone in the direction of the Saracens invading the island. Therefore, another large rock is called the Saracen Rock.

14:19 Agios Neophytos Monastery was founded in 1159 by the monk Neophyte the Recluse. When St Neophyte was returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he went to the deserted mountains near Paphos, where he settled in a small cave. He made a cell with a grave prepared for himself, and near the exit he placed an altar from a marble slab for worship. The cave is called Engleistra, which translates as a place of seclusion. Among the sights, there also are frescoes painted on the walls of the cave during the life of St Neophyte.

The government on last Wednesday announced the easing of Covid restrictions, including reopening hairdressers and beauticians on Monday and primary schools and the retail sector on February 8.
There will be mandatory testing on those returning to work.
“As we have stressed many times, de-escalation steps will be very slow, coordinated and controlled, so that the epidemiological situation can be monitored to limit the possibility of worsening,” Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou told a news conference.
Following a three-week lockdown, the cabinet has decided to reopen barber shops, hairdressers and beauticians and raise the number of staff physically present in private service companies from 25 per cent to 50 per cent.
Gatherings in houses are banned, except visits of up to two people who are first- or second-degree relatives.
Primary schools, shops and malls will reopen on February 8, along with betting shops, museums, and archaeological sites.
Lyceum third-year pupils will also be going back.
Places of worship will be allowed to operate with the presence of up to 50 people, provided health protocols are followed.
February 8 will also see a rise in the people permitted in visits to homes to four.
The 9pm-5am curfew remains in place. The number of outings per day is still restricted to two and SMS permission to leave home is still required. A number, ‘9’ will be added to the options for hairdressers and beauticians. For house visits, people will have to use ‘5’.

Paphos is a coastal city in southwest Cyprus and the capital of Paphos District.
The current city of Paphos lies on the Mediterranean coast, about 50 km (30 mi) west of Limassol (the biggest port on the island), both of which are connected by the A6 highway. Paphos International Airport is the country's second-largest airport. The city has a subtropical-Mediterranean climate, with the mildest temperatures on the island.
In 1980, Paphos was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its ancient architecture, mosaics, and ancient religious importance. It was selected as a European Capital of Culture for 2017 along with Aarhus.
New Paphos (Nea Paphos) was founded on the sea near a natural harbour. It lay about 60 stadia or 12 km northwest of the old city. It also had a founding myth: it was said to have been founded by Agapenor, chief of the Arcadians at the siege of Troy, who, after the capture of the city, was driven out by the storm that separated the Greek fleet onto the coast of Cyprus. (Pausanias viii. 5. § 2.) An Agapenor was mentioned as king of the Paphians in a Greek distich preserved in the Analecta; and Herodotus (vii. 90) alludes to an Arcadian colony in Cyprus.
In reality, it was probably founded by Nicocles (d. 306 BC), the last king of Palaepaphos, based on an inscription recording his founding of the temple of Artemis Agrotera at Nea Paphos. The inhabitants of Marion were probably also transferred to this new city after its destruction in 312 BC by Ptolemy. A hoard of unused silver coins (in the Cyprus museum) found under the Hellenistic House dating back to the end of the 4th century BC are the earliest find at the site and indicates its founding date.
Old Paphos always retained the pre-eminence in worship of Aphrodite, and Strabo states that the road leading to it from New Paphos was annually crowded with male and female votaries travelling to the ancient shrine, and coming not only from the New Paphos, but also from other towns of Cyprus. When Seneca said (N. Q. vi. 26, Epistle 91) that Paphos was nearly destroyed by an earthquake, it is difficult to say to which of the towns he refers. Dio Cassius (liv. 23) relates that it was restored by Augustus, and called Augusta in his honor; but though this name has been preserved in inscriptions, it never supplanted the ancient one in popular use.
Paphos Archaeological Park covers most of the ancient Greek and Roman City and is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its ancient ruins.
The most significant remains so far discovered are four large and elaborate Roman villas: the House of Dionysos, the House of Orpheus, the House of Aion and the House of Theseus, all with preserved mosaic floors. In addition, excavations have uncovered an Agora, Asklepion, the Basilica of Panagia Limeniotissa, a theatre, and a necropolis known as the Tombs of the Kings.

Paphos Archaeological Park | Cyprus tourist attraction
The park represents remains of ancient city of Paphos, founded by the Greeks shortly after the Trojan War in the 12th century BC. Historians call it Neo-Paphos. The city was entirely destroyed by earthquakes in the 4th century AD.
Here you can see the ruins of an amphitheater, a town square and entire streets with colonnades. Particularly valuable are the well-preserved mosaics of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
They are in the house of Dionysus, which belonged to a wealthy Roman citizen. His estate was 2,000 sq. m² and occupied an entire block. The house had 40 rooms, 15 of which with mosaics based on ancient Greek and Roman mythology.
Other mosaics are in the house of a Roman proconsul. Perhaps they even belonged to Cicero, who was proconsul in Cyprus for some time. Be sure to read about mosaics on Wikipedia before visiting. It will be much more interesting if you understand their plot.
Also in the park is a fortress of the Crusaders Saranta Kolones, which translates as 40 columns. The Crusaders conquered the island in the Middle Ages. The fortress was built from ruins of an ancient city and stood until an earthquake in 1222.
