How To Start a Small Farm: the seven questions you should ask yourself first

You want to start a small farm? Ask yourself these seven questions to help develop clarity and guide your future plans.

Jose and I have moved to Hawaii to start a small farm. The problem is we are sheltered in place with very little to do so we have been working on our farm plan and business plan until we can get out and actually purchase a piece of property for ourselves. We thought we would share with you some of the things to think about before you start a small farm. This first video is the seven questions you should ask yourself before you start a farm.

1. Who are you? Do you have the personality for farming? While farming is an incredible way to reconnect to the planet and control where your food comes from it can also be very frustrating. You are at the mercy of the weather, and the insects, and other issues. Farming takes years of knowledge development, it takes patience and when things don't go as planned you have to be willing to try again or look for other options. Farming is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done and despite the setbacks its worth it.

2. What is your goal for starting a farm. Do you want to grow food for you and your family? Are you hoping to grow a specific crop for a product? Do you want a market farm where you grow several different crops for CSAs and farmers markets? Knowing your goal will help you to answer the rest of the questions we are posing today.

3. What is your knowledge level around farming? Are you willing to become a full time student? There are so many things you need to know and understand when you are farming for profit. You not only need to understand production you also need an understanding of business operations and sales skills to help you sell what you are growing. You will also want to learn about your local climate and what types of crops grow best. What type of soil and nutrients will you need? If you want to raise production animals you will need to learn animal husbandry. If you are not interested in learning and growing, farming may not be the right choice for you.

4. How much time do you have? How much time do you have to commit to farming activities? Growing crops can take a lot of time. You need the time to plant, and weed and harvest. When thinking about time you also need to consider your plan. When is the best time to plant each crop? When will those need to be harvested? How labor intensive is each crop? How will you rotate crops? Can you do multiple plantings in a season? There is a lot to think about with relation to time when you are farming.

5. Where will you be growing? Will you be growing in your yard? Will you be growing in a green house? Will you be purchasing a small farm? What is the climate like in your area? Can you grow year round or will you have a few months off in the winter? What is your soil like? What types of amendments will you need? Will you need water? These are all questions to consider when you are thinking about starting a small farm and the answers will impact how much you can grow, how much time and money you will need to invest, and how much of an income you can create for you and your family.

6. What about the money? There are two parts when you think about the financial aspects of your farm. First, how much money will you need to get started? Second, how much money will you be able to earn for your family? These are both important numbers to consider when you are planning your farm. If you want to get a loan you will have to be able to show your potential income versus your expenses. We will talk more about this when we create the business plan a few videos from now.

7. Who will be your target market? Are you only worried about feeding your family? Are you hoping to sell CSA shares or sell at farmers markets? Do you want to do direct sales to restaurants or grocery stores? What are the regulations in your area for farm sales? Having an understanding of your target market is very important when considering your marketing plan, how much space you will require and knowing what to plant.

If you want to start a small farm asking yourself these seven questions is an important first step to help you decide your direction and the steps you will need to take to get your farm operational.

In the next several videos we will be creating several farm plans for different properties we are looking at and we will be doing a series of several videos on how to build a business plan. We hope you will subscribe so you can plan and learn along with us.

Ballard Canyon Syrah, Larner Vineyard

Syrah. You know it. You have heard it called Shiraz and made into lush giant styles from Australia. Maybe you have had it in a GSM, that Rhone blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Chances are you have even tried it as a single variety wine, perhaps a French . It's not the nation's top variety sitting behind the Cabernet Sauvignon & Chardonnay that made Napa what it is. Syrah however is extraordinarily expressive. In Ballard Canyon it is the most widely grown grape. Much of that happened by accident. Growers didn't plant Syrah because they heard about someone else planting it, it was just simply the right grape to plant in this soil and this climate. Then it thrived. Syrah composes more than half of the planted vineyard acres in the Ballard Canyon AVA, so it's no wonder that they chose this variety as their Champion as they tell the world about Ballard Canyon.

Recently while we were in Santa Barbara, Michael Larner took the time to show us the Syrah in the Larner Vineyard, explain how they chose their clones and the future of Syrah at Larner Vineyard.

This is America’s Best Wild River Trip | DIY Idaho | 5 days Fly Fishing Hiking & Backpacking

If you pack smart and plan accordingly you are sure to leave with a lifetime of memories. Folks this is going to be 5 days fly fishing one of the most remote drainages in the lower 48.

This is truly the fantasy land most outdoorsman only see in dreams. The landscapes taken out of a Tolken tale will make you fell small at every step and the raw elements will remind you how insignificant you truly are. Even though the surroundings are sure to take the breath away, each step ought to be taken with the utmost care. Always keep you gaze keen on the horizon because no matter how vast, there is a good chance you are not alone.

In a lot of ways, this set of challenges may seem insurmountable for the adventurous angler..
But there is good reason fellowships continue to make the pilgrimage to these wild lands. Thriving native fish still swim strong all throughout these emerald waters. Despite the growing list of obstacles brought on by modernity, relics of yesteryear can still be found at the top of these skeleton systems. Apex predators mix with seasonal residents to give a fleeting glimpse of much wilder times in the not so distant past.

Ancient Synagogue at Wadi Hamam - Sea of Galilee

We are in Wadi Hamam. very nice view of the ancient synagogue with Mount Nitai at the background. The ancient synagogue is located on a steep slope at the base of the cliffs of Mount Nitai, I would consider this to be quite dangerous, there are evidence of such stones around the remains of the village, rocks that have detached from the cliff and damaged the village. So what was the logic in locating the village on the cliff slope. One of the opinions that I explain in detail in the video about Mount Nitai, refers to the steep escape route to the top of Mount Nitai, which leads to enter the compound protected by the wall at the top of the mountain. The escape route was worth taking the risk of the sliding rocks.
We do not know the name of this antient village, there are several options but none have a clear proof yet.
As for our location, we are 200 meters from the Bedouin village of Wadi Hamam or in short Hamam. Arbel Cliffs are 700 meters south of us and they are just opposite of Mount Nitai cliffs, we are also located 2 km from the ancient village of Arbel, and 2 km from the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
The village here began in the days of the Second Temple and dates to the beginning of the first century BCE, which is the Hasmonean period.

Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) has a climate and varied elevation that allows for the production of both Camellia sinensis var. assamica and Camellia sinensis var. sinensis, with the assamica varietal holding the majority of production. Tea production is one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka, and accounts for 2% of GDP, contributing over US$1.5 billion in 2013 to the economy of Sri Lanka. It employs, directly or indirectly, over 1 million people, and in 1995 directly employed 215,338 on tea plantations and estates. In addition, tea planting by smallholders is the source of employment for thousands whilst it is also the main form of livelihoods for tens of thousands of families. Sri Lanka is the world's fourth-largest producer of tea. In 1995, it was the world's leading exporter of tea (rather than producer), with 23% of the total world export, but it has since been surpassed by Kenya. The highest production of 340 million kg was recorded in 2013, while the production in 2014 was slightly reduced to 338 million kg.
