CENTRAL MARKET HALL / VÁSÁRCSARNOK- BUDAPEST HUNGARY - 2021 4K

The Great Market Hall in Budapest (in Hungarian Nagycsarnok or Vásárrcsarnok) was built in 1897, and is the most beautiful and largest of all Budapest market halls (yes, there are more historical market halls in Budapest, like the one in Hold Street called the Downtown Budapest Market Hall).

The market hall is not only ‘Great’ in its size, but is also great in other aspects. Most importantly the market is also central, no wonder it is also called the Central Market Hall, for both of its location (5 min walk from the city centre), and the volume of trade taking place here on a daily basis. See the Opening Hours of the Great Market Hall here.

If you love fresh goods, people watching, shopping, photo opportunities, guided tours with tastings, or just sightseeing in amazing places, we trust you will enjoy visiting our beloved Great Market Hall. No matter if it rains or shines, the Great Market Hall is a great option, and definitely one of the top Budapest attractions according to many Budapest guides.

You can get all sorts of goods on the 3 floors of the Great Market Hall of Budapest: fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fantastic salamis, pickles, fresh fish, Hungarian paprika, Tokaj wines, various souvenirs, bags, clothes, pans and pots, and even home style meals, or Hungarian snacks like Langos at the upper floor food stands and eateries. Welcome to Budapest, Hungary, an amazing city, full of history, beauty, and delicious Hungarian food! Today, I headed with my friend Adam ( to go on an ultimate Hungarian street food tour in Budapest. #Budapest #Hungary #HugarianFood

Great Market Hall - It’s one of the coolest markets in the world, a massive indoor market hall. Inside you’ll find all things Hungarian food, from an immense array of sausages and famous Hungarian cured meats to loads of paprika, and Hungarian pickles. We had an amazing time walking around, discovering the ingredients that make Hungarian food unique.

Fakanal Etterem - This is a nice restaurant on the second floor of the Great Market Hall, the chef recommended the eggs with sausage and extra chilies. It was delicious and the best way to get this street food tour started. Price - 970 HUF ($3.20)

Belvárosi Disznótoros - Next we walked over to Belvárosi Disznótoros, a locally popular restaurant for all things Hungarian meat. Inside you’ll find meat paradise - sausages of all kinds, meats galore, and something I noticed that we had to try - Mangalica pig - a special hairy pig from Hungary. Total price - 5,348 HUF ($17.65)

Molnár's Kürtőskalács - You can not visit Hungary and not eat Kürtőskalács - it’s not the easiest word to pronounce. It’s unique, it’s delicious, and they have a number of different flavors and combinations of what you can order. It’s loved by locals and just about everyone in the world who visit Budapest. Price - 1,200 HUF ($3.96) each

Retró Lángos Büfé - If you’re looking for the real deal Hungarian street food in Budapest, look no further than Retró Lángos Büfé, and specifically the food called langos. It’s a type of fried bread, loaded with you choice of toppings. We got the original with cream, cheese, and onions. It was everything you could possibly want on a fried bread, and incredibly tasty. I can still feel the pillowy dough sinking into my teeth. Price - 800 HUF ($2.64)

Downtown Market Hall - Hold Street Market - Next we headed to Downtown Market Hall in Budapest, another old market hall.

A Séf Utcája - After walking around for a while we stopped to eat at A Séf Utcája, specializing in home-cooked styles Hungarian food classic recipes. Food was delicious again, full of paprika, bright, and tasty. Price - 1,900 HUF ($6.27)

Espresso Embassy - Coffeeshop Budapest - By this time we needed a coffee, so we stopped at Adam’s favorite coffee shop called Espresso Embassy. Some of the best coffee you’ll find in Budapest.

Rétisas Vendéglő - To end this ultimate street food tour in Budapest, Hungary, we went to a sit down restaurant called Rétisas Vendéglő. It was a local spot with some unique and huge deep fried dishes. Great place, amazing food, and by the end of the day, we were stuffed! 7,490 HUF ($24.72) - Total price for everything

Budapest 4K Walk Great Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok)

This is a Budapest 4K Walk Great Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok) video. The Great Market Hall is the largest and arguably the most beautiful of all the markets in Budapest. It is often called the Central Market Hall because of it's location, just at the end of the pedestrian street, Vaci Utca. It opened in 1897, which makes it the oldest indoor market in Budapest. It's definitely a must see if you are in Budapest.

Walking through the market while doing this video, I couldn't help but feel a bit sad. I don't mean to be a downer but this place is usually full of life with locals and tourist alike. You really felt that buzz going through this market. I noticed numerous stalls closed especially in the upstairs of the market and was thinking in my head, is this a temporary closure or would they even open again. I hope better times are coming for everyone's sake.

Budapest Central Market Hall and Good Food around Kálvin tér | Hungary Travel Guide ????????

We check what the Central Market Hall Experience is like in this Budapest Travel guide video, and what Good food we can get around Kálvin tér. Let's look at the Best of #Budapest!

The Great Market Hall or Central Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok) is a must visit place when coming to Budapest. It is located close to Kálvin tér, that may be just an ordinary Subway station, but there are so many nice shops and restaurants around it!

The Grand Market Hall gives off a nice vibe, and it's an excellent place to experience a bit of the #Hungarian #culture and flavors! There's also a basement part where you can get some ideas for souvenirs, as this is the place that showcases Hungaricum's, things that are typically Hungarian.

But the area has been siginificantly renovated over the past few years and a ton of new shops and eateries have popped up:

In this video we are also showing you a pretty good brunch place called Cafe Brunch Budapest! If you are hungry for an Avocado Salmon sandwich or some bacon and eggs, then it's a worthy place to check out.

We also visited one of the Frei Cafe's, a Hungarian Coffee franchise that it all over the country. They have an interesting selection of coffee and tee plus their interiors look very colorful and fun!

We call out one of our favorite Italian restaurants nearby: Trattoria Toscana. It has a very good and tasty selection of seafood and pasta, so don't miss it if you are a fan of the italian cuisine! During summer you can also sit outside and have a beatiful view at the Gellért hill.

We also pass by Belvárosi Disznótoros, it's an eatery that also functions as a butcher shop! They offer a wide variaty of local Hungarian dishes, so if you would like to try out some of those, it's a very good option!

One of our favorite specialty coffee shops is also in the neighbourhood: Budapest Baristas. If you enjoy specialty coffee then I would gladly recommend them as they have a nice selection of beans and different types of coffee.

There is also a shop that's called Best Stuff. It is a very cool place if you want to buy some merch related to Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars or Kawaii stuff, but they also have a wide selection of sweets and unique beverages.

At lunch time we went to Al Dente, an authentic Italian bistro that serves excellent Pasta dishes! The owner is a fun guy from Italy who actively works between the tables, so you can be assured that the flavors you get won't dissapoint.

Nearby there is also another great bar that serves Mediterranean food: Tapas! The place called Padron is also a family owned business similarly like Al Dente.

And of course we had room for sweets, so we collected some excellent Cheesecake inspired desserts at Say Cheese. If you have lactose intolerance or gluten allergies, you can still find some delicious items here as they have lactose free and gluten free products!

Last but not least we picked up some Artisan chocolate at Rózsavölgyi Csokoládé! The chocolates not only taste delicious, but they also have very cool packaging and awesome looking chocolates!

Central Market Hall - Budapest, Hungary

A tour of the Central Market Hall in Budapest, Hungary.

Description
The Great Market Hall or Central Market Hall, Market Hall I (Hungarian Nagyvásárcsarnok) is the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest, Hungary. The idea of building such a large market hall arose from the first mayor of Budapest, Károly Kamermayer, and it was his largest investment. He retired in 1896 and participated in the opening ceremony on February 15, 1897.

It is located at the end of the famous pedestrian shopping street Váci utca and on the Pest side of the Liberty bridge at Fővám square.

History
It had already been suggested in the 1860s that the food supply to the capital city should be improved by the construction of market halls. One of the main objectives set by preliminary plans was that only food which had been inspected should be sold. Not only had the establishment of the retail network to be organised, but they also wished to regulate the sale of wholesale goods.

Because of continuous deterioration in food supply conditions, a plan encompassing the whole capital was worked out in 1879. General assembly resolution No. 852 of 30 December provided for the establishment of a Food Committee.

The committee formed to prepare for the establishment of market halls drew up a proposal in 1883. They considered the most favourable position for the Central Market Hall to be Fovám Square, on the site of the Salt depot.

On 28 October 1885, the subject of the market hall once again arose in the capital. The Committee for Economics and Food discussed and accepted the initiative of committee member Lajos Nyíri. They were of the decided opinion that the Central Market Hall must be built in the 9 th district, on the plot of land lying between the Vámház Blvd, and Pipa, Csillag and Sóház (meaning: salt depot) Streets. At that time, the plot was the property of the state treasury. According to an initial agreement, the royal government relinquishes the plot for the sake of the capital.

Materialisation of plans for a market hall had been dragging on for several years at that time, and essentially no progress had been made. Conditions further deteriorated due to the disorganised state of food supply for the capital and the rapid increase in the population. In 1890 events connected with the establishment of the market halls increased in pace. To an increasing extent, the public became aware of the necessity for a market hall.

After a general assembly resolution in 1891 which appeared to be final, the Prime Minister Kálmán Tisza, or rather the Justice Minister Teofil Fabiny, relinquished the site to the capital in exchange for a site on Alkotmány Street.

The building was designed and built by Samu Pecz in 1897. The market offers a large variety of stalls on three floors. The entrance gate has a neogothic touch. A distinctive architectural feature is the roof which was restored to have colorful Zsolnay tiling from Pécs. The size of the building is 10,000 square meters and is covered by steel structure. During World War II the market was significantly damaged and remained in deteriorating condition. It wasn't until 1991 that a thorough renovation was undertaken to bring it back to its original splendor. The building re-opened in 1997 to much acclaim and was awarded with FIABCI Prix d’Excellence in 1999. The Central Market Hall continues to be one of the most popular tourist attractions of the city.

Most of the stalls on the ground floor offer produce, meats, pastries, candies, spices, and spirits. Many of them have items that are popular with tourists: paprika spices, Tokaji wine, Túró Rudi, kolbász sausage and salami can be found there. The second mezzanine floor has eateries and tourist souvenirs. The basement contains fish mongers, picked vegetables stalls and a few specialized butcher shops.

The market opens Monday through Saturday at 6am, but closes Monday at 5pm, Tuesday through Friday at 6pm, and at 3pm on Saturday.

Hungary Travel Vlog - Central Market Hall Budapest 4K ????????

We begin our journey on the sleeper train at the border between Romania and Hungary. I was awoken from a deep sleep at first by a Romanian Border guard. As I scuffled to find my socks, he angrily yelled at me, Forget the socks! Show me the passport! As we crossed the border into Hungary, the Hungarian Border Guard was much friendlier. He loved hearing about my home state of Kentucky, especially Kentucky Bourbon and the Kentucky Derby. After arriving at my hotel, the Hotel Vision, it was on to the Central Market Hall of Budapest, built in 1897. We stop briefly at the famous Danube River before ending the day at St. Michael's Church.
