Brunei - The oddest country we've ever been to! (in a good way)
Brunei, a tiny little country on the North coast of Borneo is definitely the strangest country we've ever visited. Signs of its former glory are still around but as the oil boom is past things are definitely looking a little run down. The country seems to be re-making itself and it'll be interesting to see what the next decade brings.
The people we met were incredibly friendly and helpful. We stayed only a few days but I think we covered the highlights. It was cool to see but I'm not sure there's enough to do for us to take another trip there soon.
edit: Note that I've edited the description above to remove a line about the Sultan. While the information I wrote was what citizens of Brunei shared with me while I was there, it clearly struck a nerve with people from Brunei. My intent with my photos, videos or any other content I put out is never to offend people, but to show people a part of the world they may have never been to and inspire travel. I'm glad so many people from Brunei are proud of their country and I appreciate the mostly positive feedback I heard from this video.

After 10 years, I have returned to the country that I enjoyed THE LEAST in all of my travels… Brunei. It’s a tiny country on Borneo island, sandwiched in between Malaysia and Indonesia, and I was very nervous to go back. Why? Because my last video there was all about how much I hated it, and I was so worried that I would be thrown in jail by the government, or even yelled at by the locals…. But this time around, I went in with fresh eyes and a new perspective, and I really enjoyed it!!!
I met up with a local Bruneian friend from Instagram named Bryant, and he took me under his wing to show me his version of Brunei. And what we discovered will seriously blow your mind!!

While I constantly try to find the positives in every place I visit, there are a few nations that I just simply didn't enjoy.
The country of BRUNEI is one of them.
I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as stoning to death LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

During our short visit to Brunei, we managed to visit most of the country's sights. From the Royal Regalia Museum and the water village Kampong Ayer to the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the Royal Palace, and the mangrove rainforest to see the famous proboscis monkeys.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment.
We discovered the world of “travel hacking” while planning our honeymoon & became addicted ;)
So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world.
Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went back home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with living on the road and found a new passion for capturing our travels through video. So we did everything we could to keep going.
4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time.
After ~2 years of van life, we are back to full time international traveling! And now we are finding the best adventures the world has to offer :)
We are incredibly grateful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ???????????? Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey!

Have you ever heard of ASHGABAT, TURKMENISTAN before? If not, then get ready to learn about how strange it is here in my 170th country.
I've spent the last 24 hours roaming around the capital city of Ashgabat, and IT REMINDS ME EXACTLY OF PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA in just about every way possible. Huge fancy buildings with very few people inside perfectly manicured gardens and boulevards with nobody on them and this eerie feeling that someone is watching over my shoulder 24/7. TURKMENISTAN IS WEIRD.
People had told me that Ashgabat was strange, but I had no idea to what extent it was until arriving here.... Find out everything you need to know about Turkmenistan's capital in this video!
