Sailing in the beautiful British Virgin Islands

The ONLY WAY to experience the Caribbean is by water. We recently enjoyed a week-long sailing trip through the British Virgin Islands, aboard a 52-foot catamaran captained by Active Cruising. Exercise and healthy smoothies were provided by the ladies of The Kale Whale.

We weren't sure what to expect during the trip, as this was our first sailing adventure, but it truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our backyard was different every day as we sailed from bay to bay, island to island. We woke up to tarpon feeding below the boat, rainbows after a winter sprinkle, epic sunrises, and beautiful clear blue water surrounding us everywhere we traveled.

The daily exercises and healthy smoothies kept us energized through the day as we explored, and we were sure to indulge in local delicacies and plenty of rum after the activities :)

We experienced Tortola, The Indians, Norman Bay, Trellis Bay, Anegada, Virgin Gorda and more.

If you're the adventurous type who likes to go with the flow and let the wind guide you, you will surely enjoy this type of travel.

This was shot with Phantom 4 drone, Nikon D610, and GoPro Hero.

Sailing British Virgin Islands 2018

Here is the (not-too-short) movie of our sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands in May 2018

British Virgin Islands 2018 - Still a paradise (on-the-go-edit)

We chartered a yacht and headed out for a trip around the BVIs in January 2018. Despite a lot of destruction on some of the islands, this is a still very much a paradise. Enjoy! And go visit!

BVI Sail Spring Break 2019 - Lagoon 42

March 2019. Our first solo family bareboat in the BVIs. 8-day charter on a Lagoon 42 from The Catamaran Company.

Hodges Creek Tortola - Peter Island - Salt Island - Cooper Island - Leverick Bay (Virgin Gorda) - Anegada - Great Dog - Guana Island - Hodges Creek Marina.

- Awesome Owner's Version Lagoon 42
- Excellent people and service from The Catamaran Company
- Meeting Jack from Sailing Virgins and La Vagabonde (Riley's Cousin)
- Beautiful beaches on Anegada
- Catching, cleaning, cooking, and eating Nol's Kingfish. Mmmm Tacos.
- Fun with first free-diving attempts
- Nol chatting with Brian from SV Delos (18:21)

My first video production in many years and my first week of drone flying, so not perfect...and definitely a bit long...but wanted to capture the trip. Other than fitting in some actual diving, could not have asked for better trip.

We spend this week exploring all the beautiful islands and best places of the British Virgin Islands. It is like a vacation after all the difficult sailing and breakdowns since we left the North Atlantic months earlier.

No wonder it is one of the most visited Caribbean countries for chartering sailboats to explore - I can see why all these visitors want to charter a sailboat in the British Virgin Islands.

We visit Cane Garden Bay and Beef Island near the international airport on Tortola, see some of the damage from Hurricane Irma, go snorkelling and freediving at the Indians and head to Jost Van Dyke - famous for its beach bars Foxy's and the Soggy Dollar.

We make new friends, solve our lack of dinghy motor and get an exciting new addition to our anchoring gear.

We love this place and that is even before exploring Anegada and Virgin Gorda that apparently resemble paradise! We can see why Richard Branson made his home away from home on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands!

I wonder if the Virgin Islands belonging to the United States are this beautiful too!

British Virgin Islands 2018 - Still a paradise

We booked flights to the BVIs, picked up a brand new Lagoon 42 from Navigare Yachting and set out to explore. Despite a lot of destruction on some of the islands, this is a still very much a paradise. Enjoy! And go visit!

British Virgin Islands Sailing Vlog (BVI)

British Virgin Islands Sailing Vlog 2019, Tortola British Virgin Islands Beaches
Travel & Trips Videos 4K 🔔
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are territories of Her Majesty's land, but aside from scattered offerings of fish and chips, there's little that's overtly British. Most travelers come to hoist a jib and dawdle among the 50-plus isles. With steady trade winds, calm currents, protected bays and pirate-ship bars, this is one of the world's sailing hot spots.

Main island Tortola is known for its full-moon parties and sailing prowess. Billionaires and yachties swoon over Virgin Gorda and its magical rocks. Anegada floats in a remote reef and has a hammock waiting for those serious about unplugging. And who can resist little Jost Van Dyke, the ‘barefoot island’ where Main St is a calypso-wafting beach?

The islands have a quirky edge, and despite all the fancy boats and celebrity visitors, they remain relatively undeveloped.

You’ve read about life on a boat for a week and all the activities we were able to do and experience, but it would be impossible for me to write a description of everything we did and loved during our British Virgin Islands sailing trip. It was just that good.

Instead, I’ve provided my top 5 list of must see and do in the British Virgin Islands at the end of this post. Keep in mind, we were hardly able to do everything the islands offer, so the list is based on our route and experience only. If you’ve ever visited, I’d love to hear your favorite part, so leave a comment below!

Top 5 – British Virgin Islands

Soggy Dollar Bar – Jost Van Dyke | home of the original painkiller and the perfect place to spend a day drinking and sunbathing.

The Baths – Virgin Gorda | the rock caves are something out of Pirates of the Caribbean and the scenery at the top of the hike is unmatched.

Bitter End – Virgin Gorda | the one spot we extended our stay at – located at the very east tip of V.G. and the calm bay makes it perfect for any water sport.

“Corona Island” – Jost Van Dyke | actually called Sandy Spit, located right off the coast of Jost Van Dyke and where Corona has filmed some commercials. You’ll understand why when you see it – uninhabited pristine beach with the bluest waters we saw. Grab a cooler and enjoy some sun.

Sailing/Boat Tour– BVIs | no matter what, get out on the water, whether for a couple hour cruise or a whole day or overnight. The views are stunning and I believe these islands are best experienced from the water.

British Virgin Islands Sailing Highlights

adventureViV goes SAILING in the British Virgin Islands!

Welcome to Bella—our floating home in the BVIs! She’s a brand new 45’ catamaran with 4 suites and plenty of space to lounge!

We fly into Beef Island Airport on Tortola, where we explore Road Town on foot before meeting our family and friends for our sailing trip. Road Town is still under lots of construction as the BVIs continue to rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Cooper Island
Cooper Island Beach Club is a must visit! You can enjoy lunch and dinner in the beachfront restaurant, plus happy hour and stunning sunsets from the deck. My favorite part of the afternoon was a visit to the gourmet coffee shop where I enjoyed a delicious affogato! You can also visit the Rum Bar which has over 230 rums from around the world. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon.

Virgin Gorda
The main attraction of Virgin Gorda is The Baths, a geological wonder comprised of awe-inspiring granite boulders, which form sheltered sea pools on the beach's edge. You can take a nice walk to Devil's Bay, which can be reached from The Baths by a series of ladders scaling the boulders. The walk isn’t too difficult and a must-do when visiting Virgin Gorda!

Cane Garden Bay
A long and lovely curved bay that’s sheltered from heavy winds, Cane Garden Bay lies on Tortola’s north shore. After mooring, you can dinghy to shore and enjoy the lively bars and restaurants that line the beach. It’s a beautiful spot for watching the sunset.

White Bay at Jost van Dyke
White Bay is aptly named for it’s white sand beach lined with beach bars. The most famous bar is Soggy Dollar Bar, where boaters reached the beach by swimming to shore, and then paid for their drinks with their soggy dollars. Soggy Dollar is home to the original Painkiller — you won’t be able to resist having just one.

Foxy’s has been serving food and strong rum drinks to sailors and visitors since 1968. No trip to the BVIs is complete without a visit to Foxy’s. Watch our video to see a funny clip of the local “tickler.”

The Bubbles at Little Jost van Dyke
I saw the Bubbly Pool at low tide, and I imagine it would be more impactful at high tide; it’s supposedly like a natural jacuzzi! While the walk to get there is not more than 10-15 minutes, the terrain is uneven and might be a little steep for some.

Norman Island
Norman Island is an island at the southern tip of the BVIs archipelago, and supposedly one of a number of islands reputed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's pirate novel Treasure Island. When you visit, you can see why. Norman Island is the perfect island for paddle boarding, relaxing, kayaking, exploring, and playing with crazy conchs. We enjoyed our sunrise hike to the top of Norman Island which had a pretty incredible viewpoint.

After a fantastic week of sailing, it was time to head back to NYC for adventureViV’s birthday! Thank you, Captain Harold for the dock to dock service and for an unforgettable week sailing Bella.
