Britain's Distant Lands - The Wildlife of the UK Overseas Territories
Britain’s Distant Lands showcases and celebrates the astounding diversity of animals, plants, landscapes, cultures and history of the UK Overseas Territories.
The sixteen UK Overseas Territories are scattered across all seven seas, from the Equator to the South Pole.
They harbour lush tropical rainforest, pristine coral reefs and Antarctic tundra, as well as some of the world’s largest penguin, albatross and sea turtle populations.
More than one thousand unique plant and animal species call the UK Overseas Territories home, as do 270,000 British subjects united by a proud cultural heritage and many unique stories.
A DVD version of this film was sent to 10,000 schools across the UK and the UK Overseas Territories as part of the 2019 Hanson Box (see ).

Britain's Distant Seas - The Waters of the UK Overseas Territories
The waters of the UK Overseas Territories are Britain’s distant seas.
They grant the UK the world’s 5th largest ocean estate and the 12th largest area of coral reefs.
Spanning over 5.5 million km2, these remote watery tracts of the UK are scattered over all Seven Seas and are home to every major aquatic ecosystem on Earth, including temperate kelp forests, tropical coral gardens, seagrass beds, deep sea plains and trenches, little-explored seamounts and recently-discovered ‘black smoker’ geothermal vents.
Countless species of aquatic animals live or feed in the waters around the UK Overseas Territories, including immense numbers of invertebrates, vast shoals of reef fish, whale sharks, rays, dolphins, sea turtles, penguins and seals!
Large expanses of the waters around the UK Overseas Territories remain little explored, and new species and extraordinary discoveries continue to be made.
This documentary explores the astounding marine biodiversity of Britain's Distant Seas.

Gibraltar is a tiny British overseas territory located on the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula right next to Spain, and known as “the Rock”. Gibraltar is a melting pot of Spanish, North African and English cultures.
The best time to visit Gibraltar is between May and October, the hottest month of the year in Gibraltar is August, when the mercury stays above 28°C.

Hundreds of species across the Territories are now at the bring of extinction, but the dedicated and determined efforts of conservationists on all of the UK Overseas Territories are working to safeguard the Territories' wildlife for the world of tomorrow. Gibraltar, British overseas territory occupying a narrow peninsula of Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast, just northeast of the Strait of Gibraltar, on the east side of the Bay of Gibraltar (Bay of Algeciras), and directly south of the Spanish city of La Línea. It is 3 miles (5 km) long and 0.75 mile (1.2 km) wide and is connected to Spain by a low, sandy isthmus that is 1 mile (1.6 km) long.
Gibraltar is a heavily fortified British air and naval base that guards the Strait of Gibraltar, which is the only entrance to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Trafalgar Cemetery occupies a small area of land just to the south of the city walls, in what had been a defensive ditch during the period of Spanish rule of Gibraltar. Although it is named for the Battle of Trafalgar of 21 October 1805, only two victims of the battle are buried there. The remainder of the interments are mostly of those killed in other sea battles or casualties of the yellow fever epidemics that swept Gibraltar between 1804 and 1814.
The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens or La Alameda Gardens are a botanical garden in Gibraltar, spanning around 6 hectares. The plants of the Alameda Gardens are a combination of native species and others brought in from abroad.

This mini-documentary explores the wildlife of the British Antarctic Territory - a wedge of Antarctica that includes the Antarctic Peninsula. This UK Overseas Territory is home to spectacular landscapes of ice; glaciers, ice bergs and ice sheets. This icy world is a home for leopard seals, many species of whales, penguins and petrels. On land, the flora of the white continent is sparse, and consists mainly of mosses, lichens and a few small flowering plants, but the few rocky outcrops of the Antarctic Peninsula were selected as sites for research bases of several nations. We visit Port Lockroy, a British base established during WWII. We find patriotic penguins trumpeting under the Union Flag, and the Royal Mail's most southerly outlet. Nearby, we find beaches littered with giant whale bones - the legacy of a century of whaling. North of the Antarctic Peninsula, we visit volcanic Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands. This active volcano is covered with a mix of ash and now, and we find a strange mix of penguins and geothermal hot sands. But how will this unique icy wilderness survive in the warmer world of tomorrow?

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 6.7 km2 (2.6 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Spain. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar at the foot of which is a densely populated town area, home to over 32,000 people. Its sole official language is English. Pounds sterling is the currency in Gibraltar and circulate mixed with locally issued notes and coins, the Gibraltar pound.

The UK Overseas Territories are 14 groups of islands scattered across all seven seas. The Territories are home to a dazzling array of amphibians and reptiles, including dozens of species that occur nowhere else on Earth. This diversity includes many species of iguanas, including the spectacular blue iguana of the Cayman Islands, tortoises, sea turtles, several boas (including a rainbow boa with iridescent scales) chameleons and one of the world's largest frogs. This mini-documentary explores this astounding diversity of amphibian and reptile species.
