Trams, Trains and Boats of Britislava (Slovakia)

With time on my hands before embarking on our evening Danube dinner cruise I took the opportunity to explore the town, including riding the trams and spending time watching trains at Central station. I saw a number of different types of tram in operation, but it was the trains that really captured my eye, most were locomotive hauled. There were plenty of different locomotives in a range of liveries, including the very stylish ZSSK: 240 Laminátka (Laminate lady) electric locomotives built 1967–69 by the Škoda Works. Finally we made our way to the Danube where our boat was waiting to take us on a very pleasant cruise into Austria past castles and attractive river bank towns and villages.

Driver's Eye View - Sereď to Bratislava (Slovakia)

Our affectionately named “Grumpy Diesel” pulls away from Sereď station for the final run to Bratislava, bringing to an end this most enjoyable tour of Slovakia, during which we traveled over standard, broad and narrow gauge tracks with a variety of locomotives, steam, diesel and electric, we even experienced standard and narrow gauge rack railways.
The sun is hanging like a massive orange ball in the sky as we once again travel along a single track cross country line, this time to Trnava where we pick up the mainline. At Bratiaslava we leave our train to gather on the platform, where our “Railway Touring Company” guide bids a fond farewell and thanks our excellent hosts “The Albatros Klub” on our behalf for a truly memorable tour.
Finally we finish with a look back at some of highlights from this extraordinary, meandering adventure through some of the finest scenery to be found anywhere in Europe.

Now part of the national collection, it is operated by the volunteer based “Albatros Klub”. In this video we take a fast run from Bratislava to Štúrovo.

Driver's Eye, Line-side & Passenger's View - Zvolen to Valaská

Join me once again for the last leg of a very long and enjoyable day that started in Bratislava with steam locomotive “Albatros”. With most of my cameras now finished for the day, this last camera working was not the best for filming from a vibrating diesel locomotive. I have used all the reasonable cab footage mixed with shots from the line-side and passenger carriages to give an impression of the pretty countryside this line traversed to reach Brezno. Unfortunately the last working camera gave up within sight of our destination, just 4 or 5 Kilometres short, hence the title “Zvolen to Valaská”. I experimented with the complete cab footage to see if it was possible to turn it into something watchable. I found that when sped up to 3 times actual speed, the jelly effect became disguised enough to make the footage reasonable to watch, so I have included it in the second half of this video.

Driver's Eye View - Prague Tram Tour with a very special Tatra T3 Coupé tram

A tram with a “Wow” factor normally reserved for iconic sports cars is hard to imagine, but the Tatra T3 Coupé does just that. In a city where trams both modern and traditional are a common sight, the T3 Coupé stands out as people stop, to wave, take a photo or just watch it pass by. The T3 tram has been an integral part of the Prague cityscape for over half a century, Prague Public Transit Co in conjunction with the studio Anna Marešová designers worked to create a sightseeing tram that celebrated the T3 in Prague, resulting in the creation of the T3 Coupé, combining the very best of sixties design with a contemporary, stylish all white interior.
Prague's first horse drawn tram line was opened in 1875, and the first electric tram ran in 1891. Today’s network consists of 142.4 km of track served by a sizable fleet of 968 trams.
This video starts at Náměstí Republiky with trip to Sídliště Barrandov over the extension opened in 2003 between Hlubočepy–Sídliště Barrandov followed by a run through the city to Královka and finally on to Pohořelec close to Prague Castle.
