Botswana’s Okavango Delta - Heaven on Earth

DIRECTOR’S NOTES:

Hey! Antoine Janssens here. Since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated by the wildlife around us. I watch a lot of wildlife documentaries and the beauty that they display still shocks me all the time.

The vision that I have about this sensitive topic is quite simple:
« Look at the beauty of this animal evolving in the wild. We must protect it if we want our children to see it the way we do. »

People protect what they love.

The goal of this movie is to show the beauty of the Okavango Delta and the magnificence of these species living their best life in the wild. And honestly, it's also good to see a place where humans don't have control over it.

I hope this movie will touch you deep in your heart (or just a little bit it’s quite ok ????). Let me know what you think in the comments, I’ll be there!

And finally THANK YOU VERY MUCH @Beautifuldestinations for making this possible!

Exploring the Okavango Delta in Botswana - Africa's Last Eden

The Okavango Delta in Botswana, is the largest inland delta in the world. All the water reaching this vast habitat is ultimately evaporated and transpired, and does not flow into any sea or ocean.

The Okavango Delta is one of Africa's last remaining great wildlife ecosystems and provides refuge to huge concentrations of game.

Filmed with Panasonic GH5, G9 and GX80 with Lumix G Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm, Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm, Leica DG Summilux 25mm & Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm. Some footage taken with iPhone 8.

This is the second episode in the Botswana Trip 2022 video series. In the previous episode, Francois van der Westhuizen and I spent four days exploring Khwai’s Magotho region and we had amazing leopard and lion sightings. In this episode we drive back to Maun to pick up our wifes, Tabby and Steph, and along the way spot two packs of wild dogs.

We return to Magotho campsite in Khwai for another five days and have some of the best elephant sightings of the whole trip. We also spend an unforgettable morning exploring the Mbudi River on Mokoros and end our trip with a helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta, which included a Champagne stop in the middle of nowhere!

In the next episode we drive down to Botswana’s largest and wildest game reserve, the Central Kalahari, where we spend three nights at Deception Valley.

Okavango Delta, 1000th Unesco World Heritage Site

The seasonal flooding of the Okavango River spills across the parched Kalahari landscape, producing a gigantic inland sea that is peppered with lush islands and brimming with wildlife

Each year, during Botswana's long dry season, the Okavango River floodwaters arrive from the Angolan highlands and push the permanent Okavango Delta outwards into its seasonal floodplains.

The result is an enormous sprawling inland delta that is characterized by a mosaic of islands, shallow channels, and fluctuating wetlands. Wildlife abounds in this verdant landscape. Aside from the Big Five – all of which occur here –visitors also stand an excellent chance of seeing African wild dogs, especially in the drier northern and eastern regions of the delta.

Explore the watery wilderness of the Okavango Delta with us

Botswana’s world-famous Okavango Delta, also known as the “Jewel of the Kalahari”, could easily be the most pristine oasis in the world. The Okavango River finds its origins in the highlands of Angola, in a catchment area of about 112,000 km2.

From here it begins a winding journey of 1,900 km before fanning out into an intricate system of waterways covering 22,000 km of Kalahari sand; a phenomenon that can be observed by astronauts in space.

Enjoy a brief overview and explanation of what the Okavango Delta is all about.

K4 OKAVANGO DELTA BOTSWANA spectacular wildlife

The Okavango Delta is a labyrinth of lagoons, lakes and hidden channels covering an area of over 17,000 square km and the largest inland delta in the world. Trapped in the parched Kalahari sands it is a magnet for the wildlife who depend on the permanent waters of this unique feature.

Sometimes called a 'swamp', the Okavango is anything but. Moving, mysterious, placid, gentle and beautiful, from a wide and winding channel it spreads through tiny, almost unnoticeable channels that creep away behind a wall of papyrus reed, into an ever expanding network of increasingly smaller passages.

These link a succession of lagoons, islands and islets of various sizes, open grasslands and flooded plains in a mosaic of land and water. Palms and towering trees abound, throwing their shade over crystal pools, forest glades and grassy knolls.

The Okavango's water is remarkably clean and pure and this is almost certainly due to the fact that it passes through very sparsely populated areas on its journey from Angola. Despite this, a staggering 660 000 tons of sediment a year are delivered to its great alluvial fan.

The overall length of the Delta from the border to the Thamalakane River is a little under 300kms and so the core of the Delta is approximately 200km from end to end.

We sat with this female for 2 hours before she got up and started walking and calling. Eventually a new male in the area called back. He was welcomed by her with a slap across the face before walking off together.
