Chobe, Savuti and Khwai 2021: Episode 6 - Camping at Magotho in Khwai PART 2

In September 2021, we embarked on a 24 day overlanding trip through Botswana!

In this episode, we stay at Magotho Camp in Khwai, which is run by the Khwai Community Trust. Magotho is very rustic with the bare minimum facilities and you need to be self sufficient to comfortably stay here.

Khwai Concession is situated between the Chobe and Moremi reserves, and therefore there are no park fees payable to stay in this area.

In saying that, it is one of the most wild, scenic and immersive wilderness experience we have ever had. Wildlife is abundant and there is never a boring drive. We have had lion, hyena, leopard, wild dog, honey badger and more RIGHT in our campsite.

Check out our video and feel free to ask more questions about the incredible Khwai area of Botswana in the comments!

Botswana Overland Safari | 3rd Bridge to Xakanaxa in the Okavango Delta | Episode 2

After spending the night at 3rd bridge camp, we now make our way to Xakanaxa camp for two nights. Join us as we overland across Moremi game reserve to our new camp, encountering Elephant, Hyena, Giraffe and Lechwe along the way. We also venture out deep into the swamps, where we cross some muddy rivers - testing our vehicles and 4x4 skills along the way. Finally, we end the stay at Xakanaxa with a magnificent sunset river cruise - taking in sights and sounds that are unique to this pristine region in the Okavango Delta.

Xakanaxa Camping, Moremi Botswana. Travel guide.

Xakanaxa Camping Site is situated in probably the most beautiful part of the Moremi.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Botswana:
It is surrounded by beautiful pools and lagoons where game and birdlife are in abundance.
The camping spots are well secluded, situated under shady
trees, overlooking the lagoon and Khwai River.
Xakanaxa is the only developed area in Moremi.
Close to the public campsites, safari operators have set up luxurious private camps.
From here boats can be hired for cruises into the Okavango Delta.
A curio shop is conveniently situated outside one of these lodges.
Our next stop is Khwai Camp.
Situated at the north gate of the Reserve, the travelling distance is about 45km, but as the route offers lots of scenic drives, it is advised that you spend some time on this route.
Game viewing is very good and the Hippo Pools close to Khwai is a worthwhile visit.

Botswana Overland Safari | Savuti to Kasane, in the Okavango Delta | Episode 5

In this final episode of the Okavango Delta Overland Series, we pack up at the beautiful Savuti camp and start to make our way across the Chobe National Park towards Kasane.
This trip involves navigating through some really thick sandy roads, exiting Chobe at the Ghoha gate, crossing the Forest Reserve and then re-entering at the Ngoma gate. The drive along the river provides magnificent views of the Chobe river itself, and we are spoilt with beautiful sightings of Kudu, Impala, Giraffe, Zebra, Elephant, Baboon and Buffalo.
We eventually make our way into Kasane where we check into Chobe Safari Lodge for two nights - and explore the river on a sunset cruise, go tiger fishing and go on a final self drive safari to try and find the famous but elusive prides of Chobe Lions.

As our journey through this magnificent country comes to an end, we make our way back to Francistown from Kasane, and prepare for the long drive back to Johannesburg in South Africa, with one big goal in mind…to think about, and plan the next adventure!

Botswana Overland Safari | Xakanaxa to Magotho, in the Okavango Delta | Episode 3

In this episode, we leave the beautiful Xakanaxa camp site in the Moremi Game Reserve and journey across to the Khwai Game Reserve, and the Magotho Campsites in particular. We stumble upon a family who have managed to get themselves well and truly stuck in the Okavango Delta swamp mud, and we spend some time helping to get them free and on their way again. Once setup in our new camp, we explore the beautiful area around the camp, and encounter a number of animals and birds, including Elephant, Hippo, Waterbuck and Giraffe, as well as Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher and the unusual looking, and endangered, Wattled Crane.
Join us for this third edition of our Botswana Overland Safari through the magnificent Okavango Delta.

SAVUTI & CHOBE (& Corona) - Lost in Africa Ep 5 (Finale)

**I must first apologise for this taking so long. I guess there was something about editing the finale that made the trip being over real, so I avoided it for months.**

We had plans to travel Africa for at least 6 months. Letting the road guide us north. I needed to fly to London at one point for a commercial, but it didn't really matter which large city I flew from, and my mom was planning to fly up to join Bianca for a mini adventure while I was away. The only deadline was for a shoot in Rwanda three months later. We wanted to reach the Gorilla's, do a lap of Lake Victoria, and then head back south through the famous reserves of East Africa. We sold most of our furniture, I sold my house, this was not going to be a short journey.

Then out of the blue a global pandemic hit, and we were stuck in the middle of nowhere. The news seemed to suggest it was out of control and we would be better off staying in the bush, but we were also scared of the borders closing around us, and we were on temporary tourist visas.

I hope you enjoy our journey!

Getting There: Our 4x4 gets stuck in the soft sand (Savuti Ep1)

Our #African #safari has begun. We are on our way to #Savuti, Botswana. We meet up in Johannesburg, then start the long drive up North. We stop over at Nata Lodge then continue driving the next day. In Kasane, we pop in at the Pangolin Hotel to say hi, then continue on the transit road through the Chobe National Park. At the Chobe River, we turn left, and drive next to the river till the tar road ends. Once we are on the dirt track we stop to let down the tyres and lock the hubs (but not before Andy gets stuck) then continue along the very bumpy road, past a dead elephant to Savuti. We get stuck in the soft sand one more time and have to use the tracks to get free. Finally we arrive at the campsite after dark, only to discover that our booking is for the following night ????‍♂️

In this series we are on safari filming in Savuti, Linyanti, and the Chobe Waterfront. Savuti is part of the Chobe National Park in North-Eastern Botswana. It is famous for its lions and elephants. The Savuti Channel cuts through the area between rocky outcrops then empties into the Savuti Marsh. The channel is currently dry (and has not flowed for nearly 2 decades), but there are pumped waterholes for the animals, and the roots of the large trees along the banks of the channel can reach the water deep underground.

This is the final episode in a four-part video series about a Botswana self drive safari that my friend, JI de Wet, and I did in October 2021. In this episode we continue our time at the magical Magotho Campsite in the Khwai Community Concession in north-western Botswana.

We have arguably the best lion sighting I've ever had in Khwai, or the whole of Botswana for that matter, when we follow a lioness for two hours to where she tries to cross the Khwai River to get to the rest of her pride. A couple of hippos, however, make it very difficult for her.

We also spend our last four game drives searching for the Magotho female leopard and her cub that we saw on our first afternoon in Khwai, and then, on our final afternoon, we finally find them.

I also give you more information about our six amazing sponsors, as well as a few basic tips that will help you to have a successful and enjoyable Botswana self drive safari.

A month in Botswana | Episode Five | Moremi Game Reserve

We leave Khwai Safari Grounds and head to North Gate in More Game Reserve. North Gate is close to a beautiful forest that runs along the Khwai river which we love to explore and spend some time in.

We also head to dead tree island just north of Xaxanaka for a bit of off roading fun.

2021 Botswana Adventure: - Episode 2 - Mankwe to Magotho

Episode 2 (of 3) of our June 2021 Botswana Adventure.

This trip was more than 2 years in the making. Due to Covid, our trip for 2020 had to be cancelled.
This year we ALMOST were not able to do this trip, again Covid.

For this trip, we enjoyed the Khwai River area and Moremi Game Reserve.
Needles to say, we had many water crossings and getting stuck in the mud on occasion... Great fun was had - This was truly an Adventure!

Khwai and Moremi Game Reserve is fantastic place for Game Viewing. One of the best in the world.
Combine your love of Nature and Wild Life to Adventurous exploration - You have the PERFECT playground for an African Adventure!
Did we Experience Wild Africa on this Trip? - 101% YES WE DID!

A long hot day on bumpy roads (Savuti Ep5)

With no camping available in Savuti we decide to head back to Kasane and spend a few days in the Chobe Waterfront. It's a long day: early morning drive, packing up camp, towing the trailer back over the sandy tracks to Kasane, then an afternoon drive along the waterfront.
