SAFARI in BOTSWANA: Travel Guide for 4x4 camper ROAD TRIP to see ALL animals!

Welcome to Africa and welcome to wildlife paradise! Botswana is one of the best countries in the world for safari drives. In this video you'll see our little family on an adventurous road trip in a 4x4 camper. Due to bad weather we have some bad luck on the way, but in Africa help is always nearby. The heavy rainfall makes the challenge to cross Botswana a bit tougher, but we manage to find all the African animals in the National Parks.

In the previous episodes you saw how we started the road trip in Cape Town South-Africa. From there we drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on a safari in Etosha National Park. After Botswana we'll continue the road trip through Zimbabwe and the Kruger National Park, to finally deliver the camper in Johannesburg South-Africa again.

Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Zanzibar & Tanzania, South-Africa and Namibia, Botswana is already destination number 24 on the big trip. We have also been away from home for over a year now. Follow us on this world tour, first in Botswana and then to many more beautiful destinations in Africa! We still travel non-stop all year and film everything, with a new episode every week. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or

Botswana 2020 Behind-the-scenes (Part 1 of 2) - Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

In February 2020 we travelled overland to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Parks in Botswana to film the desert wildlife of the Kalahari and the zebra migration during the rainy season. In this short film, I hope to show you a bit about what goes into filming high resolution content in the remote African wilderness. This is my first behind-the-scenes video, so please let us know in the comments if you would like me to make more of this kind of content.

The adventure starts in Hermanus, near the Southern tip of Africa. Since my usual assistant was unable to come on this trip, my mother kindly offered to join and help with the driving. We travelled via the Karoo into Botswana and on to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. In the CKGR we camped for 3 nights in Deception Valley filming desert wildlife, birds, lions and cheetahs. Then we travelled West to Tau Pan Camp where we spent most of our time on the pan itself, filming the herds of wildebeest, gemsbok (oryx) and springbok, as well as a beautiful male lion, a cheetah, a giraffe, bat-eared foxes, and black-backed jackals. After a few nights at Tau Pan, we moved East again to Leopard Pan, where we camped for a 3 more nights. From Leopard Pan, they visited the small copse of trees where Mark and Delia Owens camped in the 1970s. They later wrote the book 'Cry of the Kalahari' about this experience.

After more sightings of lions and other Kalahari birds and animals, we headed out of the park. In part 2 of this series we visit Boteti River Camp, near the gate of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park as well as South Camp in Nxai Pan National Park.

Part 2:

Filmed on Red Weapon Magnesium, GoPro Hero 8, DJI Mavic Pro, and Samsung Gear 360.

Botswana Safari Self Drive

Botswana Safari - Moremi National park and outside the park closer to Maun.
In this video, we explore Khwai in Moremi National Park. We also camped outside the South gate of the park for the two nights at Kaziikini Safaris. and explore the Dobe Border Crossing the next day, which is one of the most interesting border crossings I've ever seen. We drove through Tsumkwe and made our way to Etosha National Park.

The road between Maun going to Dobe, about 400km is gravel road and not that good of a road.

If you're interested in camping in Botswana, this is a great video to watch! This is part 3 of a 3 video series.

Botswana 2020 Behind-the-scenes (Part 2 of 2) - Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Parks.

In this short film, I hope to show you a bit about what goes into filming high resolution content in the remote African wilderness. This is my first behind-the-scenes video, so please let us know in the comments if you would like me to make more of this kind of content.

If you have not yet watched part 1, click here first:

After ten days in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, we left the park and travelled to Boteti River Camp, near the gate of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Here we spent some time exploring the mostly dry riverbed, and filming elephants, giraffe, fish eagles, hippos, lilac-breasted rollers, and other beautiful species that frequent this ares.

We then travelled through the park, intending to camp at the remote Tree Island campsite, but since the zebra migration had not yet arrived in the area, we decided to keep moving and camp at South Camp in the Nxai Pan National Park. In Nxai Pan, we were happy to find the large herds of zebra we had been looking for.

In this film, I also do a walk around of my filming vehicle, and share some tips for remote cinematography and camping in African wildlife areas.

Filmed on Red Weapon Magnesium, GoPro Hero 8, DJI Mavic Pro, and Samsung Gear 360.

Getting There: Our 4x4 gets stuck in the soft sand (Savuti Ep1)

Our #African #safari has begun. We are on our way to #Savuti, Botswana. We meet up in Johannesburg, then start the long drive up North. We stop over at Nata Lodge then continue driving the next day. In Kasane, we pop in at the Pangolin Hotel to say hi, then continue on the transit road through the Chobe National Park. At the Chobe River, we turn left, and drive next to the river till the tar road ends. Once we are on the dirt track we stop to let down the tyres and lock the hubs (but not before Andy gets stuck) then continue along the very bumpy road, past a dead elephant to Savuti. We get stuck in the soft sand one more time and have to use the tracks to get free. Finally we arrive at the campsite after dark, only to discover that our booking is for the following night ????‍♂️

In this series we are on safari filming in Savuti, Linyanti, and the Chobe Waterfront. Savuti is part of the Chobe National Park in North-Eastern Botswana. It is famous for its lions and elephants. The Savuti Channel cuts through the area between rocky outcrops then empties into the Savuti Marsh. The channel is currently dry (and has not flowed for nearly 2 decades), but there are pumped waterholes for the animals, and the roots of the large trees along the banks of the channel can reach the water deep underground.

We don't make much money from these videos. So if you like what we do, please consider supporting us on Patreon:

The playlist for this series can be found here:

Filmed and edited by Robert Hofmeyr and Andrew Caldwell.

Behind-the-scenes shot on a GoPro Hero 10. For the telephoto wildlife shots we used a Canon 200-400mm f4 lens on a Red V-Raptor camera. Moving shots were done using a Red Komodo 6K with a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 or Canon 14mm f2.8. Aerials filmed using a Mavic Air 2s.

Botswana & Namibia Selfdrive Safari January 2020 Part 4

In this last part of this epic adventure we left Moremi and travelled to Magadikgadi Pans, Nxai Pan and Khama Rhino Sanctuary before returning home.

4x4ventures | Overlanding BOTSWANA | A Wild Adventure | Ep4

Overlanding Botswana a wild adventure episode 4:

Thank you Mark, for joining us on this one, and all your help and knowledge of the bush. You are welcome around my fire anytime mate.

In this the last episode to my Overlanding Botswana series, I look back and conclude that this was an over-landing celebration in being allowed to adventure travel through Botswana as the borders open up to South Africa. A trip I would advise anyone to make. Look at doing this one in the winter months, where water holes serve as gathering spots for wildlife.

In this episode I adventure travel with Ed and Chris, and mate Mark. We travel from the North of Botswana, from Kasane to Elephant Sands, where we camp for one night and get a sighting at the waterhole that is sure to leave an impression on any visitor to this area.

We continue the trip to the Makgadikgadi pans where we camp for 2 nights on Kubu Island. A serene moment for me and the gents and always a favorite of ours to come back and visit. An over-landing trip is just not complete without visiting this magical place.

I end this series at Khama Rhino Sanctuary, where our ultimate African adventure began, some 21 days prior.

This part covers an epic trip towing the off-road trailers, on new roads and in new areas as we share our overlanding escape. The last time I camped at Nxai Pan, I was 9 years old with my dad, so this was all the more special.
