This is Bonaire (4k) - Pride of the Dutch Caribbean

Bonaire National Marine Park is an underwater sanctuary that surrounds the entire island of Bonaire. The park is the world's oldest marine reserve and was established with support from the World Wildlife Fund and managed by the STINAPA foundation. Bonaire marine park is one of the world's most beautiful diving destinations.

Join us on a journey through the beautiful coral reef of Bonaire, the pride of the Dutch Caribbean. We’ll take you along breathtaking reef structures, through endless coral fields, and past its surprising inhabitants. Bonaire is a Caribbean Sea island off the coast of Venezuela. The Caribbean Sea surrounding Bonaire homes approximately 350 species of fish, and the coral reef encompasses about 60 species of coral.

The island is surrounded by coral reefs and is easily accessible by car or boat for any diver. With pleasant water temperatures and varied depths from shallow to deep, the reefs are easy to dive independently without a guide. However, a guide is recommended on the east coast as currents can be rough.

Because of the presence of seagrass and mangroves, a shallow lagoon in the southeast of Bonaire is a one-of-a-kind area. With restricted access, a portion of the mangroves remains virtually undisturbed, making it a valuable resting area for birds and a nursery for many fish and other aquatic life. However, mangrove forests are under threat. The Mangrove Maniacs Foundation, a group of people united in their mission to preserve the mangroves for the future, looks after this particular area.

Today, salt is still extracted from the salt pans of the Pekelmeer. In the colorful basins of the southwest, seawater evaporates naturally, leaving behind salt for extraction.
Another colorful area is Bonaire's capital, Kralendijk, where buildings and murals are painted beautifully bright colors.

Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of endangered sea turtles in Bonaire. In addition to rescuing injured turtles, sea turtles are frequently captured for a short time to monitor their health, growth, and provide them with a tag or satellite transmitter. The data from the transmitters provide valuable insight into the turtles' foraging and breeding habits.

Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire is doing everything it can to restore the reef. Coral nurseries can be found all over the island, where coral fragments grow in coral trees before being planted on the reef.

The wildlife above water is rich in biodiversity with birds, lizards, iguanas. Washington Slagbaai National Park, which encompasses the entire northern region of Bonaire, is a protected nature reserve. The nature reserves are easily accessible by car and offer a memorable experience.

This film is the result of around 80 hours of 4k video footage and a few months editing. Shot in August / November 2021.

Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean - Beautifully Odd or Oddly Beautiful?

A few months back I flew to Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean - where, I hear you cry? You may have heard of Curacao and you're probably heard of Aruba, and Bonaire is the little brother of those islands deep in the Southern Caribbean close to Venezuela.

It's not as well known as its siblings as it doesn't have any golden beaches. So it lacks a lot of tourism, and so it lacks a lot of tourist infrastructure. But it is surrounded by amazing oceans and contains a lot of flamingos, salt and donkeys. A lot of donkeys...

So come with me as I share my experience of visiting Bonaire!

About Bonaire: Bonaire is a Dutch island in the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. Its capital is the port of Kralendijk, on the west (leeward) coast of the island. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao form the ABC islands, 80 km (50 miles) off the coast of Venezuela. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, the ABC islands lie outside Hurricane Alley. The islands have an arid climate that attracts visitors seeking warm, sunny weather all year round. Bonaire is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving destination because of its multiple shore diving sites and easy access to the islands fringing reefs. As of 1 January 2019, the islands population totaled 20,104 permanent residents, an increase of about 1,200 since 2015. The islands total land area is 288 square kilometres (111 sq mi); it is 38.6 kilometres (24.0 mi) long from north to south, and ranges from 4.8–8 km (3.0–5.0 mi) wide from east to west. A short 800 metres (0.50 mi) west of Bonaire across the sea is the uninhabited islet Klein Bonaire with a total land area of 6 km2 (2.3 sq mi). Klein Bonaire has low-growing vegetation including cactus (Papiamento: kadushi), with sparse palm trees near the water and is bordered by white sandy beaches and a fringing reef. // Kralendijk is the capital city and main port of the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands. The language spoken in the town is Papiamentu, but Dutch and English are widely used. As of 2017, the town had a population of 10,620. In Papiamentu, the town is often called Playa or beach. This Is The Netherlands?! Beautiful Bonaire Island

Diving in Bonaire, The Netherlands Antilles

Travelstory with pictures:
There are 63 dive sites in Bonaire from which you can dive from the shore. There is also small Bonaire for which you have to take a boat. The sights on Klein Bonaire while diving are similar to the shore dives. There are 27 dive sites on Klein Bonaire. Many different coral and fish species can be seen there.

Bonaire - Beautiful island of the Netherlands located in the Caribbean Sea

Bonaire is a Caribbean island that occupies an area of approximately 111 sq mi and has an estimated population of 20,104. The island measures 24 mi long from north to south, and its width ranges between 3 mi and 5 mi. Politically, it was previously part of the Netherland Antilles, which was a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and later became a special municipality of the Netherlands following the dissolution of the Netherland Antilles in 2010.

Bonaire, together with Aruba and Curaçao, form the ABC islands, which are situated 50 mi from the Venezuelan coast. Additionally, Bonaire is one of three islands that make up the Caribbean Netherlands, which also includes Sint Eustatius and Saba.

The flat, tiny island of Bonaire is often overlooked by Caribbean vacationers, and that’s a shame. Like Aruba, it boasts an amazing climate, and it’s safely out of the hurricane band. The “rainy season” runs from October to January, but total precipitation is low. Dutch and English are widely spoken here, and the official currency is the U.S. dollar, which is a nice perk. Attractions include salt flats, ancient rock art, historic buildings and exquisite beaches. Be on the lookout for flamingoes and iguanas, which are found in abundance. For food, don’t miss the rock lobster or conch.

Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

Bonaire was the fourth island on our itinerary and the third of the Netherlands Antilles. This is the island we had the least time for. The ship docked at the pier very early in the morning and sailed at noon. There was no way we could see the whole island in such a short time, so we decided to explore the lower southern part. There is only one coastal road that goes around the island. We rented a golf cart and stopped often along the way. We visited the salt pans, the slave houses, the lighthouse and several beaches we visited.
It was an extremely pleasant experience!

Entry from: Kralendijk, Netherlands Antilles
Entry Title: Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

Entry:

Bonaire - Bonaire is a fairly small (116 square miles), sparsely populated (15,000 people) island in the southern Caribbean. It's part of the ABC Islands - Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. It sits 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela. The island is very dry (~18 inches of rain per year) and is covered with cacti and thorny plants. It also has no real sand beaches; the shoreline is covered with large chunks of coral. There's only one small casino, and while the pier can accommodate 2 cruise ships, the passengers tend to only go ashore in the main town for 1-2 hours at a time and maybe take a driving tour around the island. There's very little to do, not much shopping or entertainment, and they get few tourists. Have I made it sound unappealing? Good! We like it the way it is. We love the place. It's best known for diving and snorkeling. The conditions are awesome, and the coral reef is in very good condition. The surrounding waters have been a protected marine reserve since 1979. The variety of hard and soft corals, sponges, and gorgonians is fantastic, with a huge variety of colorful fish. We made this trip specifically for diving. We went to Bonaire 5 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Bernd was not certified for SCUBA at the time, so I went on 2-3 dives, but mostly we snorkeled and explored the island. This time we stayed at a dive resort and went on at least one dive every day. Bernd bought an underwater camera, housing, and external flash just before the trip, so we had lots of fun taking underwater photos. See the separate entry for photos. Bonaire lies south of the hurricane belt, so the weather is pretty ideal and they experience few destructive storms. 99% of the time, the steady trade winds blow from east to west across the island. The east, windward coast is extremely rugged and constantly pounded by surf. The west coast is always calm, with no waves and little current - ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Unfortunately, last year Hurricane Omar, while it didn't hit the island, caused a huge storm surge for several days as big waves pounded the normally calm west coast. It damaged some buildings that sat close to shore (the water came up as high as the deck on the second floor of our hotel restaurant), and damaged some of the coral near shore. Bonaire is part of the Netherlands Antilles; they recently voted to strengthen their ties to the Netherlands and are basically regular Netherlands citizens (as I understand it - their status has changed recently). There are direct flights from Amsterdam. The official language is Dutch, many people speak Spanish, and almost everyone speaks English as well. The local language is a Creole language called Papiamento - a combination of Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, and African languages from former slaves. The people are very laid-back and friendly. There is very little crime. The island's physical environment is pretty unfriendly to human habitation and development. It doesn't support much agriculture or industry. There used to be a couple of larger plantations, growing aloe, divi divi trees (the seed pods were used to tan animal hides), and goats. There are no good fresh water sources on the island; they primarily use desalination to produce drinking water. The biggest export over the years has been salt. There are large, shallow saltpans that flood and then evaporate, leaving behind salt. Originally they used slaves to work the saltpans and load the salt onto ships. They still mine salt, and you can see huge mountains of it. They also have a large complex of oil tanks. Oil companies from Venezuela and Mexico store oil there, and then buyers load the oil directly from the storage tanks into their tankers. Apparently it's cheaper ...
