Discover Bonaire

One of the charms of Bonaire living is the island's size. Being small, everything is accessible making it easy to enjoy the island's treasures. Yet, the island is still plenty big that it's next to impossible to see it all in just one visit. That explains why more than 40% of Bonaire's visitors have been on Bonaire before. The population is a mixture of more than 80 nationalities and ethnic backgrounds.

Dutch West Indies - 2002

This is a Photo - Montage of my two trips to the Dutch West Indies (more commonly known as the Netherlands Antilles) in 2002 and 2006. The original Netherlands Antilles was made up of Surinam (formerly known as Dutch Guyana), which became independent in 1957 and two groups of Islands in the Caribbean sea. A group of three islands in the Leeward Islands (North Caribbean) called Sint Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba and a group of three islands in the Leeward Antilles (South Caribbean) more commonly known as the ABC islands after their names Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. I have so far visited five of these six islands, the one exception being St. Eustatius, which is only accessible by air.

Sint Maarten
Is the largest populated Dutch Island in the North Caribbean with a population of some 42.000 inhabitants. It is unique in that it is the only island in the world that is shared between two countries (Holland and France) and as such has two international airports on this tiny island. Sint Maarten/St. Martin is one of the hottest tourists spots in the Caribbean and also has a large terminal to support the many cruise ships that dock here during the cruise season. The capital town of Philipsburg is a quaint old fashioned Caribbean dwelling made up mainly of old wooden buildings, most of the population now live outside in the surrounding area.

Saba
Saba is the smallest island in the Caribbean, it is basically a steep volcano that came up out of the sea 900 metres high. For a long time it was thought that Saba was uninhabitable because there appeared to be no flat land on the island which could be cultivated or build houses on. As we see 2.000 inhabitants have proven that theory wrong and they have even managed to build a road from the small port to the airport on the other side of the island. Saba airport is one of the most dangerous airports in the world to land and/or take off as there is a sheer cliff face at both ends. In 1992 the Saba University School of Medicine was built, which houses 400 international students.

Aruba
Aruba is the most western of the ABC islands, it is the only island in the Netherlands Antilles which has semi-autonomy. The island is quite lush and green in the South, where most of the tourists beaches lie but very arid and rocky in the north. The aptly named capital city is called Oranjestad (Orange Town) and is the largest built up area on the island with a population of some 30.000 inhabitants. As with most islands in the Caribbean Aruba lives mainly from tourism.

Bonaire
Bonaire is the smallest of the ABC islands and lies between Aruba and Curacao. Although tourism is it's main income it also produces large amounts of salt in the south of the island. It also has a large nature reserve for Flamingo's and is sometimes called Flamingo island. In the north of the island Bonaire has the only national park in the Netherlands Antilles with an abundance of flora and fauna. The entire sea area around Bonaire is a designated National marine park and boasts some of the best dive sites in the Caribbean with an abundance of wrecks and colourful fish. Bonaire is the only island in the ABC islands, which has it's own mini-island (Klein Bonaire), this is a nature reserve and mainly a nesting ground for sea turtles.

Curacao
Curacao is the largest of the islands in the Netherlands Antilles, not only in size but also in Population (170.000 inhabitants) indeed the capital city of Willemstad is the largest Dutch populated city outside of the Netherlands with a population of just over 100.000 inhabitants.
Unlike the other islands in the Netherlands Antilles Curacao is not totally dependant on tourists and boasts a large oil refinery refining mainly oil from Venezuela. The port of Willemstad is also a free trade area. Like Aruba the north of the island is rather barren with all the green lush area's and tourist beaches on the south side of the island. Willemstad has a rarity at the mouth to the port, a floating Bridge (Pontoons), which is driven parallel to the harbour wall every time a big ship enters the harbour. This floating bridge connects the west and east sides of the city.

This Photo - Montage was made with Windows Movie Maker and the music attached to it, called Pixelated was taken from that software. I do not own copyright to this music nor is this video monetised.

BONAIRE - Travel Guide | Around The World

Bonaire is a Caribbean island east of Central America and north of Venezuela. The island is part of the ABC Islands together with Aruba and Curaçao. It is a flat, riverless island renowned for its dive spots. Its tropical climate is moderated by constant trade winds from the Atlantic Ocean. The temperature is almost constant at about 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit).

Politically, Bonaire is a special municipality fully integrated in the Netherlands proper.

Tourism is one of the major industries of the island, and 80% of visitors to the island come to scuba dive. Bonaire is often considered the top best scuba dive destination in the Caribbean. The colorful coral reef that circles the island is lush and diverse, and its proximity to the island makes for spectacular and convenient shore diving.

The second major source of tourism on the island is cruise ship visitors whose boats dock for a single day and then depart at night. With a local population of only 18 000, the visiting passengers of 3000 or 4000 person cruise liner have a significant influence on the island, particularly in downtown Kralendijk where the ships dock.

Bonaire has its own passport control stations to monitor visa requirements and entry and exit regulations. (Bonaire is politically and administratively a part of the Netherlands, but it is not part of the the Schengen Area, and therefore has different entry laws than the Netherlands.)

Although Bonaire is part of the European Netherlands makeup, those living ouside the public bodies of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba have limited freedom to visit Bonaire. Dutch nationals and citizens living outside the public bodies can visit Bonaire visa-free for 6 months. The Dutch identity card is not valid in Bonaire, instead the Identity card BES is required to enter Bonaire.

Visitors from dozens of countries can enter Bonaire visa free as a tourist. Cruise ship passengers also do not need visas.

Direct flights onto the island are available from the Netherlands (with KLM, departing from Amsterdam), several US hubs, and Canada (with Sunwing, departing from Toronto). Smaller Caribbean airlines connect Bonaire to nearby islands. European and North American flights may offer tickets to Bonaire through code sharing with local airlines out of Curacao. (Note that Caribbean airlines tend to be less reliable than larger commercial operations, so be prepared for unforeseen delays, changes, or cancellations.)

Passengers arriving by plane will need to clear passport control before entering the airport. This may require waiting in line in the sun, so plan accordingly. The airport itself is open air (not air conditioned) and does not have any restaurant or shopping facilities.

Bonaire is not publicly accessible by passenger ferries. It is possible to arrive via a chartered or private boat. Some Caribbean cruise lines stop for a day in Kralendijk.

Scuba Diving
If you came to Bonaire, you probably came to dive. Numerous packages and facilities cater to the least and most experienced divers. Even the standard issue local tourist map has dive sites clearly listed. Most sites are accessible for shore diving, and a few can only be reached by boat. Designated dive sites are marked by a (painted) yellow rock with the name of the dive site.

Snorkeling
If you didn't come as a diver, or if you're visiting on a cruise ship, snorkelling is a fun, easy way to experience the underwater world of a coral reef. You'll need a snorkel mask, a snorkel tube, and a pair of fins. You can bring your own or buy some from a local shop, but if you just want to try it out, guided tours are available that include basic instructions and equipment rentals. Experienced snorkellers will find plenty of diverse sites to visit. Some have beach or ladder access, while others require entering and exiting over ironshore (so reef shoes are recommended). Snorkellers require a permit which can be purchased from any local dive shop.

Bonaire Island Tour | Royal Caribbean Bonaire | What to do in Bonaire

We did the Best of Bonaire shore excursion with Royal Caribbean and Freedom of the Seas that took us on an island tour.

Highlights include:

- scenic drive to the south side of the island
- Salt Flats
- Historic Homes of the Salt Flat workers (Slave Huts as locally referred to)
- Lac Bay

Our tour guide was very informative and commentated the entire drive. We began the tour with a scenic drive from the cruise terminal and heard about the history of the island including the salt industry. We stopped to see some of the salt flats where the salt continues to be produced to this day. Our next stop was at the historic homes of the salt workers - and a view into slavery on the island to support this industry. We ended our tour at Lac Bay, a spot popular with windsurfers and swimmers for the calm waters, but strong breeze.

Following the tour we were dropped off at the cruise port and then went exploring Kralendijk, Bonaire.

Think pink on this leisurely, commentated drive on the lookout for Bonaire's famous flamingos. Travel through the countryside to the southeast's lush mangrove forests, stopping for a refreshment break at the spectacular bay where you can dip your feet in the turquoise waters. At the salt flats of Pekelmeer (Pink Lake), shrimp-filled pools attract flocks of flamingos. Touch history inside the crude huts that sheltered the 19th century slaves who worked and harvested salt here.

Bonaire

Bonaire is an island in the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. Its capital is Kralendijk, near the ocean on the lee side of the island. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao form the ABC islands, 80 km (50 miles) off the coast of Venezuela.[9] Unlike much of the Caribbean region, the ABC islands lie outside Hurricane Alley. The islands have an arid climate that attracts visitors seeking warm, sunny weather all year round. Bonaire is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving destination because of its multiple shore diving sites and easy access to the island's fringing reefs.

As of 1 January 2019, the island's population totaled 20,104 permanent residents, an increase of about 1,200 since 2015. The island's total land area is 288 square kilometres (111 sq mi);[2] it is 38.6 kilometres (24.0 mi) long from north to south, and ranges from 4.8–8 km (3.0–5.0 mi) wide from east to west. A short 800 metres (0.50 mi) west of Bonaire across the sea is the uninhabited islet Klein Bonaire with a total land area of 6 km2 (2.3 sq mi). Klein Bonaire has low-growing vegetation including cactus (Papiamento: kadushi), with sparse palm trees near the water and is bordered by white sandy beaches and a fringing reef. The reefs, beaches and on-island reserves located on both Bonaire and Klein Bonaire are under the protection of the Bonaire National Marine Park, and managed by Stichting Nationale Parken Bonaire (STINAPA).

Bonaire was part of the Netherlands Antilles until the country's dissolution in 2010, when the island became a special municipality (officially, a Caribbean public body) within the country of the Netherlands. It is one of three special municipalities in the Caribbean; the others are Sint Eustatius and Saba. An 80% majority of Bonaire's population are Dutch nationals, and nearly 60% of its residents were born in the former Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.

Bonaire

Bonaire is an island in the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. Together with Aruba and Curaçao, it forms the group known as the ABC islands, less than a hundred miles off the north coast of South America near the western part of Venezuela. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, the ABCs lie outside Hurricane Alley. The islands have an arid climate, which helps tourism, as visitors to the islands can reliably expect warm, sunny weather.
