The BEST Bolivian Street Food to Try in La Paz

Finally, some street food video from La Paz, Bolivia! Actually, it's our first one since we're in South America. We were excited about this one because who doesn't like to eat?
Bolivia is full of fantastic street food and especially in La Paz!

According to our hotel owner, we had the best saltenas in La Paz and walked around Mercado Lanza to try some good street food bites. Even tried cow's heart - anticucho in Mercado Camacho, known as the best spot to eat them there.

WHAT TO SEE IN LA PAZ + BOLIVIAN FOOD TOUR // BOLIVIA TRAVEL VLOG

After pushing our way through altitude sickness when we first arrived in La Paz, we finally made it out of our apartment and into the bustling administrative capital of Bolivia! A new country for us, we were so excited to see the sights and start getting to know Bolivia.

We spent the day exploring the city and trying as many local Bolivian dishes as we could, which is our preferred way of getting to know a new culture. We start our by day eating at a common chain restaurant called Wistupiku in the Sopacachi neighbourhood before making our way to San Pedro Prison, notoriously one of the most dangerous and lawless prisons in the world. From there we took mi teleferico up to El Alto to see the beautiful city views, and then headed back into the city centre to visit Mercado Lanza for lunch (which was an experience!). Then it was off to San Francisco Square where we found all sorts of art and food stalls, before finally seeing the notorious Witches Market which truly does hold many, many petrified llama fetuses.

Throughout this day of exploring we managed to try 8 Bolivian foods: humintas, pastel de queso, api, fricase, mocochinchi, a fruit salad dessert bigger than Nicole's head, helada de canela, and choripan. It was a full day of exploring and eating, but we finish the day feeling like we had experienced quite a bit of La Paz in just one day!

If you are wondering what to see in La Paz, if Bolivia is safe, or what foods to eat while you are in La Paz, then watch the video through to the end to see all the things you can get up to in just one day in the big city!

When Gourmet Gives Back: Creating A Food Scene In Bolivia

At 12,000 feet above sea level, in the Bolivian capital of La Paz, a unique culinary experiment exists. In 2013, Denmark's celebrated chef Claus Meyer came to Bolivia to start a cooking school and restaurant. With a nascent food scene and a diverse array of produce, the city seemed primed for Meyer's culinary philosophy—seasonal cuisine driven by locally-sourced ingredients. Today it has become a source of pride in Bolivian culture.

Late night Bolivian dinner ????????

Late night Bolivian dinner ????????

2 TRADITIONAL BOLIVIAN DISHES THAT YOU HAVE TO TRY

When I arrived in La Paz, I had heard very little about Bolivian food. People that come to this country, usually look for two main touristic destinations, Uyuni Salt Flats and Titicaca Lake.

Few travelers are interested in the food of Bolivia, which is a mix of influences.

We need to remember that Bolivia used to be part of Peru. Therefore, it shares some dishes from the south of this country, like ajíes which are soups based on pepper with different meats or pasta. You can also find empanadas because of the influence of the north of Argentina, they call them Tucumanas and Salteñas.

Bolivia has a significant indigenous population and a strong identity that you can see reflected in their cuisine. There’s also a lot of poverty, but a lot of natural resources. They use a lot of potatoes, local peppers and seeds.

Once I arrived in Cochabamba, I got introduced to Waldo Soria, a passionate of the Bolivian food. He and his wife, Melany, took me to the local markets to explore them. I have to say that I was overwhelmed with all this richness that I saw and smelled in those markets.

Back at their home, we cooked 2 traditional dishes from Bolivia; Ají de Fideo and Falso Conejo.

Falso Conejo is a very thin steak, breaded and smashed with a rock to make it thinner. Then, slightly fried. Finally, cooked in ají sauce for a couple of minutes, then served with rice, potatoes, and tomato and onion salad.

Thanks to Waldo and Melany; without their help, this video couldn't been possible.

We hope that our videos inspire you to visit the beautiful country of Bolivia one day and make some life long friends. Our Bolivian family and us hope that you can fall in love with this beautiful country. Some of you may even decide to make this your home. Either way, we hope that you find our videos useful and enjoyable! Remember, if you come to Bolivia, always be respectful and be open minded to learn new things. This applies to any country that you visit or live in. We post more shorts than long form videos. Make sure you are watching them all and if you have any questions, leave them on one of the short videos. (sometimes the comments on the short videos are open and sometimes disabled)
