For me the 3 day Uyuni tour was definitely the highlight of my trip through this country - offering great landscapes and an unforgettable experience together with a great group of fellow travelers.

라파스에서 두 시간정도 끊임없이 높은 곳으로 오르면 구름도 쉬어간다는 길과 마주하게 된다. 무엇이 구름을 이곳에서 쉬어가게 만들었을까? 구름에게 푹 안긴 산들의 모습은 부러움을 사기에 충분했다. 좀 더 험난한 구름사이를 뚫고 올라가니 이제 길은 구름과 하나가 된다는 표현이 어울리는 순간을 맞이하게 된다. “여기 지명을 아시나요?” “죽음의 도로요.” 죽음의 도로라 불리는 이 길은 도대체 무슨 이유 때문에 이런 불명예스러운 별명을 갖게 되었을까? 내 눈앞에 어질어질한 풍경이 나타난다. 운전대를 살짝이라도 잘못 꺾으면 바로 황천길로 접어드는 아찔한 길이다. 사실 나는 천성적으로 의학적으로도 강한 심장의 소유자가 아니다. 그러나 볼리비아의 마법 때문일까? 오늘 용기를 내서 이 모험을 하기로 결심한다. 내가 하게 될 모험은 아찔한 협곡사이를 철사 줄에 의지한 채 땅위로 날아야 하는 아찔한 체험이다. 목숨 그까짓 거, 아무것도 아니라는 듯 절벽을 철사 줄로 내려가는 그 심정은 무엇일까? 절박함 상황에서도 하늘을 가까이 할 수 있다는 생각에 여유를 갖는 사람들. 볼리비아 사람들을 통해 나는 비로소 ‘즐긴다는 것’이 무엇을 의미하는지 알 수 있을 것 같다. 아찔하게 내려다보이는 절벽을 보니 다리가 후들후들 떨리며 심하게 요동치는 내 심장박동이 느껴진다. 아무렇지도 않는 듯 무심히 뛰어드는 현지인의 여유에 할 말을 잊게 된다. 이곳 볼리비아에서는 사랑한다는 표현을 할 때 스페인어로 코라손이라는 단어를 쓴다. 우리말로는 심장이라는 의미. 땅위를 날며 나는 정말 잊을 수 없는 심장박동소리를 들을 수 있었다. 그리고 그 곳에 내 심장을 두고 왔다는 듯한 느낌마저 가지게 되었다. 내 심장이여! 신비의 땅 볼리비아에서 마음껏 뛸 수 있는 자유를 만끽하라. 이 자유로 나는 하늘 가까이 더 가까이 갈 수 있으리라 믿는다.
