SPECTACULAR LANDING: BREAKOFF PROCEDURE KLM B747-400ERF at Amsterdam Schiphol [4K]
Dear aviation friends,
Today we present you this KLM Cargo B747-400ERF operating a so-called breakoff procedure to land on runway 24 (Kaagbaan) at Amsterdam airport Schiphol.
The initial approach was on the ILS for runway 27 (Buitenveldertbaan) and the crew was given a breakoff by ATC to land on runway 24. We LOVE the howling sound of the engines starting at 0:45!! :D
The breakoff is a visual circling manoeuvre which starts with an instrument approach (for runway 27 in this case). When in the right position the pilot then transitions to visual outside references to position the aircraft to land on a different runway (runway 24 in the video).
During south-west storms this procedure is often used when the wind only allows landings on 24. On top of this it saves a lot of taxi time and fuel as the cargo apron is along runway 24.

The video starts with the initial descent positioning us on left base to intercept the ILS (instrument landing system) for a landing on runway 18R (Polderbaan). Taxiing back is to the cargo ramp on Schiphol East.

Approach starts in the area of The Hague (Den Haag) city, passes Scheveningen and the North Sea beaches of Katwijk aan See, continues via Rijnsburg, the Kaag Lakes and the Westeinderplassen (Westend Lakes) near the city of Aalsmeer.
Because there are no no taxiways to the threshold, runway 06 is only used for landing.
Special for the ILS (instrument landing system) approach to runway 06 is that pilots are required to fly exactly 160 knots (296 kilometers per hour) until 4 nautical miles (7.4 kilometers) before landing. This is similar to London-Heathrow and other big airports and allows a maximum number of approaches per hour.
During the filmed approach, the pilots flew a low drag / noise approach and minimized fuel consumption. They flew with flaps 3 and a speed of 160 knots until an altitude of 1200 feet and 4 nautical miles before touch down, then they reduced the thrust to idle, extended the landing gear and the flaps to full as final landing configuration. At about 1000 feet above the ground, the flight was fully stabilized on speed and thrust in final landing configuration and ready for the landing.
The airplane altimeters show at Schiphol airport -11 feet (minus 4 meters). This is below mean sea level (MSL) and very unusual because most places of the world and even most airports are located at an elevation at or above mean sea level. Reason is that Schiphol airport lies on the bottom of the old Haarlemmer Lake. The lake was drained 1852 and the airport is in use at the same location since 1916.

Rare departure runway 06 Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS EHAM)

It doen't happen very often, but some times you may depart from runway 06 (de Kaagbaan). This runway normally is only used for arrivals. In the beginning of the film you can even see they are arriving and departing from the same runway. When we where arriving to the runway they changed landing runway 36C.

**This flight was prior the Corona crisis**
This flight was flown on the 4th of oktober.
We came from Marrakech towards Amsterdam with the HZX a Boeing 737-800.
We arrived from the south overflying Schiphol.
Some heavy showers in the vicinity.
(Departing traffic want to change from the SID is you might hear as well when we are on final).
Landing runway is runway 27 today.
In Amsterdam all runways have their own name. This one is called De Buitenveldertbaan.
My co-pilot is Ferdy Francis.
