The Boeing 747 - 51st Anniversary Special

Today, 09 Feb 2021 is the 51st Anniversary of the first flight of The Boeing 747. On a cold day in Washington State in 1969, N7470, Named the City of Everett took to the skies for the first time, bringing with it a new generation of twin aisle aircraft and changing the way we flew.

On this day, I wanted to celebrate the history of this iconic aircraft by showing you some photos of N7470 at its home in the Museum of Flight in Washington while talking about the Jumbo Jet. Please let me know how you felt about the Jumbo, what was your favourite type, your favourite flight etc? Let me know in the comments!

Boeing 747 | The Queen of the Sky | 50th Anniversary

On February 1969, the very first Boeing 747 known as the Queen of the Sky, The City of Everett took her first flight. This particular jetliner changed the face of commercial flight and began the era of jumbo jet.

A Tribute to the Boeing 747

This video celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Boeing 747, queen of the sky!

Watch the rare 747 roll out and first flight footage from 50 years ago. I pay tribute to my favorite airplane with selected footage over many 747 flights throughout the years.

From the rare cockpit takeoff and landing footage on the 747 classic to the modern luxury 747-8 interior and everything in between, this video is a must for every 747 and any aviation fans!

Note: 747 historical footage are used under the approval by Boeing.

-------

The Boeing 747 was ubiquitous as the world’s “Jumbo jet” with a powerful quad-jet engine and a 150% greater passenger and cargo capacity than its predecessor, the Boeing 707.

The aeroplane had its first commercial flight in 1970, taking off from Dulles international airport after a special ceremony to christen the plane involving First Lady Pat Nixon, with the airline Pan American World Airways and held the record for maximum passenger capacity for an astonishing 37 years. The aeroplane has been regularly used by the prestigious likes of British Airways, Lufthansa, Korean Air and Atlas air.

The distinctive shape of the upper deck made the aeroplane versatile, with this feature permitting an exclusive first class lounge, as seen in this video, whilst also facilitating the forward thinking commercial ideas of Boeing, who actually saw the aeroplane’s long term use being in cargo carrying – the rounded shape allowed the plane to be easily converted to a cargo carrier by removing seats and installing a front cargo door.

The Boeing 747 surpassed all expectations – its production figures were not expected to exit the hundreds but by 1993, production of the aeroplane had surpassed 1000 units as the predicted dominance of supersonic aeroplanes failed to materialise.

The Boeing 747 has enjoyed one of the longest runs of service of any model of aeroplane and select aeroplanes are still in use today, including the Boeing 747-200 and Boeing 747-400.

A number of these wonderful aeroplanes have found homes in museums all over the world upon their retirement, for future generations to admire and appreciate the genesis of the marvel that is the Boeing 747 jumbo jet.

Airbus A320 VS Boeing 737

Which aircraft do you prefer, the A320 or the 737 ?

Also please take note that this video is a joke and I respect both Airbus and Boeing and all their aircraft, this is just for a sense of humour!????????

Why Do The Wings Of Some Boeing 747s Twist Near The Ends?

If you look at a 747 from just the right angle, you’ll notice an unusual design feature. The end part of the wing, just beyond the outboard engine pylon, has an almost imperceptible twist to it. This twist was the brainchild of the legendary Joe Sutter, and is a crucial design feature of the jumbo jet.

The GRAVITY DEFYING Giants That Changed Aviation History! | Flying Through Time | Aviation Station

In Flying Through Time Episode 3, we travel along the development path of the Giants of Aviation. Subscribe for more Flying Through Time Episodes and educational Aviation documentaries.

Antonov 124
The Antonov 124 is a giant among giants. On its maiden fight in December 1982, it was the largest powered craft to fly. The Antonov is still the world's largest heavy-lift aircraft. Surprisingly the largest aircraft ever built would dwarf the Antonov 124. The Antonov 124 is a large, strategic airlift, four-engined aircraft that was designed in the 1980s by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukrainian SSR, then part of the Soviet Union (USSR). The An-124 is the world's second heaviest gross weight production cargo airplane and heaviest operating cargo aircraft, behind the destroyed one-off Antonov An-225 Mriya (a greatly enlarged design based on the An-124) and the Boeing 747-8. The An-124 remains the largest military transport aircraft in service.

Airships
In July 1900, the Luftschiff Zeppelin LZ1 made its first flight. This led to the most successful airships of all time: the Zeppelins, named after Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin who began working on rigid airship designs in the 1890s, leading to the flawed LZ1 in 1900 and the more successful LZ2 in 1906. The Zeppelin airships had a framework composed of triangular lattice girders covered with fabric that contained separate gas cells. At first multiplane tail surfaces were used for control and stability: later designs had simpler cruciform tail surfaces. The engines and crew were accommodated in gondolas hung beneath the hull driving propellers attached to the sides of the frame by means of long drive shafts. Additionally, there was a passenger compartment (later a bomb bay) located halfway between the two engine compartments.

Douglas XB-19 Bomber

The Douglas XB-19 was a four-engined, piston-driven heavy bomber produced by the Douglas Aircraft Company for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during the early 1940s. The design was originally given the designation XBLR-2 (XBLR denoting Experimental Bomber Long Range). It was the largest bomber built for the USAAF until 1946, with the Convair B-36 surpassing it in size. The XB-19 project was intended to test flight characteristics and design techniques for giant bombers. Despite advances in technology that made the XB-19 obsolete before it was completed, the Army Air Corps believed the prototype would be useful for testing despite Douglas Aircraft wanting to cancel the expensive project. Its construction took so long that competition for the contracts to build the XB-35 and XB-36 occurred two months before its first flight.

The Spruce Goose
Officially designated the H-4 Hercules, the massive eight-engine flying boat known as the Spruce Goose (it was actually made of birch) was intended to serve as a troop transport. Initially proposed at the high point of the Battle of the Atlantic, when German submarines were sinking over 100 Allied ships every month, the Spruce Goose would make its first (and only) flight on November 2, 1947, more than two years after World War II ended. That flight was just over a mile (1.6 km) long, but it allowed Howard Hughes to claim the honor of having piloted the largest airplane ever built. In June 2016 Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen—another billionaire with an interest in flight—unveiled the Stratolaunch, a 385-foot- (117-meter-) wingspan, twin-boom launch vehicle that, should it successfully complete a test flight, would surpass the Spruce Goose’s record.

The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy
The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft designed and built by Lockheed, and now maintained and upgraded by its successor, Lockheed Martin. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsized and oversized loads, including all air-certifiable cargo. The Galaxy has many similarities to the smaller Lockheed C-141 Starlifter and the later Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. The C-5 is among the largest military aircraft in the world.

Boeing 747
The Boeing 747 is a large, long-range wide-body airliner designed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in the United States between 1968 and 2023. After introducing the 707 in October 1958, Pan Am wanted a jet 2.5 times its size, to reduce its seat cost by 30%. In 1965, Joe Sutter left the 737 development program to design the 747. In April 1966, Pan Am ordered 25 Boeing 747-100 aircraft, and in late 1966, Pratt & Whitney agreed to develop the JT9D engine, a high-bypass turbofan. On September 30, 1968, the first 747 was rolled out of the custom-built Everett Plant, the world's largest building by volume. The first flight took place on February 9, 1969, and the 747 was certified in December of that year. It entered service with Pan Am on January 22, 1970. The 747 was the first airplane called a Jumbo Jet as the first wide-body airliner.

The Last Boeing 747 - Final Delivery Flight

The last Boeing 747, a -8F is the 1574th built of a production run that has spanned 55 years. Join me in the final B747 delivery Ceremony at Boeing Everett factory.

Listen to Boeing’s current and former CEO honoring the “incredibles”, John Travolta talking about his love of B747 and Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr announcing the upgrade of their 747-8 cabins. I spoke with Charlie Trippe Jr, grandson of Pan Am’s founder Juan Trippe and many Boeing employees who worked on the 747 line with their stories and emotions.

The last B747; Atlas Air N863GT departed Everett the next morning at 8:19am. She received a water cannon salute, followed by a quick takeoff with a steep climb out. Then she performed a low flyby to say goodbye! Later, she drew a 747 and a crown in the sky!

Over the years, I have been fortunate to fly on the 747 a total of 282 times, with every model from the 747-100 to the 747-8F, from 747-SP to SR to SUD and Combis. There are many memorable ones….I picked some special 747 flights to share with you!

First Boeing 747 History & Private Tour, w/ Original Upstairs Lounge at Seattle’s Museum of Flight

Seattle's Museum of Flight is the home to the very first Boeing 747, with the original envisioned upstairs lounge, and they have recently been offering special private showings of this aircraft including touring the closed to the public upper deck.

When I visited the Museum of Flight back in January I was blown away but since moving here this summer their amazing collection had been closed (until this month!). When they announced private tours on their website I saw a chance not just to visit this amazing museum but to go upstairs to the closed off original lounge and cockpit of the first ever 747 Queen of the Skies City of Everett. I knew I had to do it. The Museum has started offering these “Premium Experiences” to have special access to various areas of interest in their collections, and even though the museum has now re-opened, they are continuing these experiences for the time being, as of September 2020.

Thanks to the Museum of Flight for allowing me to film and share this experience, and for Lynda and Nicole being on camera with me and bring great insights about the origins of the first Jumbo Jet and only Queen of the Skies, the 747.

50 Years Of The Queen - First Flight 9FEB69

It’s hard to believe, however today is the 50th anniversary of the First Flight of the Boeing B747. That was a magic year for aviation, with Concorde also making her First Flight on 2nd March 1969, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon in July 1969. Joe Sutter and his Team became known as the Incredibles, and what an incredible job they did on this game changing aircraft - only 29 months from inception to rollout.
