One Day on Lake Atitlan Guatemala | Hiking Sightseeing Boat Rides | San Marcos Santa Cruz Panajachel

Filmed September 2022 in Guatemala's Rainy Season ????

Total expenditure for the day: £65 / $75 / GTQ550

Hotel: £34
2 beers & 1 Michelada: £10
Lunch: £8
Dinner: £7
Water/snacks: £2
Boats: £6

I'd been in Lake Atitlan a couple of days touring the lake and today I decided to do a hike and take the GoPro along with me.

Starting at my hotel in Panajachel, at the top of the main drag, Calle Santander, I walked down to the Embarcadero (pier) to find a boat over to Santa Cruz, a village a few miles to the west. The first man I spoke to tried to sell me a private trip for 125 GTQ (Guatemalan Quetzales) which I wasn't interested in (extortionate price) and told me the public boat wasn't for another hour. I walked away and he tried offering me a price of 100, then 50 GTQ, but by then I had lost any incentive to give the man any of my money. A minute later, another chap came along and offered to take me straight away for 30 GTQ.

And so I was off! And with a boat to myself, we were there within 15 minutes. I made my way up the steep hill from Santa Cruz Pier to the village which seemed to be overrun with kids starting school. I didn't see a single non-Guatemalan in the village which was very colourful and had amazing views down to the lake. I had a quick walkaround, then made my way down to the shore to start the walk.

The walk took in some amazing views across the lake, through pine trees (Lake Atitlan is at an altitude of over 1,500 metres so it maintains a kind of alpine air - although as it's tropical it remains warm, a spring-like climate all year round, generally between 16-25 degrees), palm trees, banana trees, waterfalls, mudslips, small villages, luxury hotels, minimal hostels and more.

All too soon I was back on the road heading into San Marcos. After a refreshing coconut by the church, I had a walkaround the village which had a really laid-back feel to it. I had a delicious vegan curry and noodles and decided to make my way back to Panajachel.

The boat was simple to negotiate this time, a public boat for 25 GTQ and this was a busy public boat this time, making several stops and taking around 35-40 minutes. No problem, I wasn't in a rush. In Panajachel I had a couple of things to do and then I decided to go for a couple of beers and enjoy the lakeside view. In a bar that in many parts of the world would be packed, I sat and relaxed almost by myself for a couple of hours before the inevitable rain arrived.

I then went for Tacos and a nightcap before heading to bed, to get an early night ready for another day on the Lake (and a more challenging hike).

Magical Lake Atitlan Guatemala Travel Guide 4K

In this Lake Atitlan travel guide we explore 5 villages around the lake. Including Santiago De Atitlan, San Juan La Laguna, Santa Catarina, San Antonio Palopo and Panajachel. I would say this is the best place to visit in Guatemala because there are many villages to explore around the lake and culture to explore. But best of all is probably going to be the incredible natural beauty and scenery of the lake Atitlan.

There are a few towns around the lake also worth mentioning but we did not go. Such as San Marcos, which is popular with new age explorers, San Pedro La Laguna with foreign tourist and San Lucas for its proximity outside of the lake region to the Pacific Ocean. Our travel guide is from Santa Cruz La Laguna and says that one is the best. If you can get around to many of the towns and villages you will certainly feel culturally enriched and as if you really met the Mayan people.

ABOUT US:

As the #retirementtravelers, we have always dreamed of traveling, but we never in a million years thought we would become #travelvloggers and start a YouTube channel. But, that is what we did! We work hard every day to become better and create something that others will enjoy. Having a community of friends, old and new, follow our journey is fun and exciting to us.

In 2019, we achieved our goal of visiting every state in the union in our Airstream. We also visited every national park in the lower 48. We are big believers in lists, so of course we plan to see the remaining 12 parks in the next few years.

In 2021, we made the big decision to extreme downsize to just a suitcase and a small backpack, each. We started our journey around the world beginning in Central America. We hope that over the next ten years, we will have seen many beautiful things, made many memories and new friends, and shared the experience with our children and grandchildren.

We hope you enjoy the journey with us. Drop us a note in the comments and be sure to hit subscribe! ???? ???? ????

San Marcos La Laguna, located next to Lago de Atitlan is a charming village with gorgeous views of the lake and the volcanoes: Volcano San Pedro, Volcano Tolimán and Volcano Atitlán.

The area close to the dock and the lakeshore is where most of the expats and visitors hang out. There is a narrow alley with colourful murals. San Marcos is supposed to be one of the most spiritual places in the world. Here you can do for example yoga, holistic therapies and meditation.

San Marcos, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

San Marcos, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala . . . I can't say it was my favourite place but on our last day when all the clouds finally lifted it was a like a dream place. ( although I think it would have been even better in another smaller town )

The lake is wonderful and sad all at the same time. But being able to see the volcano and a crystal clear lake is something out of this world.

Exploring San Marcos La Laguna on Lake Atitlán

Took a lancha (small boat) across Lake Atitlán to explore San Marcos La Laguna on western shore of Lago Atitlán in the Sololá Department of Guatemala. This village has a little over 2,000 residents and the majority of the people are are Kaqchikel-speaking indigenous Mayans.

Effects of Rising Waters at Lake Atitlan Guatemala

Short clip showing the effects of the rising water level at Lake Atitlan (Lago de Atitlan), Solola, Guatemala. The water level has increased significantly since 2010 and a number of houses, business and hotels are now submerged with many others at risk. After being hit by Hurricane Stan in 2005 (causing the Panabaj disaster), Lake Atitlan was once again hit by a new disaster in 2009: a significant bloom of Cyanobacteria, when almost half the lake was covered in algae (see pic below).
The villages around the lake usually have two zones: one for tourists which is near the lake (restaurants, Spanish schools, hostels etc) and the traditional Mayan village which is more uphill. The Mayans claim that the waters of the Lake Atitlan are rising and then dropping every 50 years, so they are not surprised about the current situation.
The images in the clip are from San Pedro La Laguna but all of the villages around Lago de Atitlan (Santa Cruz, San Marcos, San Juan, Panajachel, Santiago Atitlan) have the same problem.
