Tony Giles is an independent backpacker who has been totally blind from birth and visited over 125 countries in the last 20 years. In this first of two special films the Travel Show follows him as heads to Ethiopia. Tony starts his journey in the countries modern, vibrant capital Addis Ababa. On his quest to take in the sounds and smells and feel of the city, he explores one of Africa’s biggest markets and tastes Ethiopian food prepared by his local host. Jumping inside an iconic blue Addis taxi, he then heads to a gallery which exhibits art for the visually impaired before ending his day enjoying traditional Ethiopian music and dance.

This is the first video of 4, describing a little about my life and how a blind person with partial deafness is able to travel independently and, successfully, around the world.

“I am totally blind and 80% deaf in both ears without my hearing aids. I also had a successful kidney transplant in December 2008. Yet I’ve visited the World’s Seven continents, all fifty states of the USA, crossed the Arctic Circle, travelled in every South American country and visited all ten Canadian provinces.”

Tony reached out to me on Facebook and suggested that we would meet. We were both in Lebanon. His 126th country and my 143rd (+Syria: 144th).

After a few hours together we decided to travel to Sidon (Saida) together the following day. He is such a rich man in many ways and has an endless amount of stories to tell! He asked me to share the following with all of you:

deaf.Meet intrepid backpacker Tony Giles who has visited 125 countries around the world on his own - despite being both blind and deaf.The intrepid explorer, 39, lost his vision at the age of 10 but learned to travel solo while commuting to his specialiast school as a teenager.He then set himself the target of visiting every country in the world because it was 'the biggest challenge possible for a blind person'.
