My journey into surf photography - 2023

Capturing a quality action shot of a surfer requires great reflexes and perfect timing. Every wave is different, so you need to be able to adjust quickly and be prepared for the unexpected. This I am learning daily...

I took a leap and moved to Costa Rica a few months ago and now I'm spending most of my days taking photos of amazing surfers. This is a whole different world than what I was used to, a world filled with world-class waves and athletes on some of the most amazing beaches the world has to offer.

So far, my time here has been a great learning experience. I spend hours in the ocean and in the sand, getting battered by the waves, so I can get that perfect shot. I've gained invaluable knowledge and skills, and hope to keep improving in this craft.

Photography is a challenging profession, but it's also incredibly rewarding. When I look at the photos I've taken, I'm filled with pride and a profound sense of satisfaction. I am so in love with surf photography and plan to make this a huge part of my professional career.

I hope you enjoy this vlog!

Uluwatu Surf Photographers with Mas Fuat, Bali

The name Uluwatu comes from ulu, meaning land's end and watu, meaning rock. Uluwatu was discovered as a surfing destination in 1972 when it was documented for a surf film called Morning of the Earth. It has five main surf breaks — The Bombie, Temple, Outside Corner, Race Tracks, and The Peak. Temples is my favourite peak as it tends to be less crowded. It's such a magical surf break. This ultra consistent surf spot has become a mecca from surfers from all over the globe. From the influx of surfers, the local photographers in Uluwatu have developed a system. They shoot everyone who surfs, from beginner to pro, and you can buy your photos from each session. We met up with Mas Fuat from Jeffry Uluwatu.

Why I wear a helmet when shooting surf photos

There is often debate in the surf photographer community on whether you should wear a helmet or not when shooting surfing photos. I choose to wear one and was glad I did when a good friend rode her nine-foot Bing surfboard straight over the top of me. What are friends for? ;)

Surf + Landscape Photography = Happy BvS

Here in Portugal we've got it good. Landscape photography locations like crazy, and today I mixed in some surf photos as well.
My Instagram:
My Camera Gear:

Surfing photography is hard when you're not in the water. But on today's vlog from Portugal I got out to Arrifana Beach and gave it a shot. There's a bonus at this beach as well that if the surf isn't great, I can always get to landscape photography.
So, while I did get some photos of surfers catching the brilliant waves with the incredible Portuguese backdrop, I also quickly went back to my bread and butter and photographed some of the rocky landscape here.
Today's photo vlog, then is a mix of surf and landscape photography. All that makes me very happy.
