Life in Marietta Georgia
The city of Marietta, Ga., is a full-service municipality distinguished by its unique history, sense of community and modern quality of life.
The city's economic development, police, fire, parks and recreation, public works, environmental services, power and water departments serve citizens and businesses.
Marietta is 15 miles northwest of Atlanta and the Cobb County seat. At 23 square miles, Marietta is one of Georgia's most populous cities, with 56,579 residents calling the city home.
The National Civic League judged Marietta one of the 10 best communities in the nation as a 2006 All-America City, the oldest and most-respected community recognition award in the country. CNNMoney.com named Marietta one of the top 25 places in the United States to retire in 2011.

Who says you need to wait until February to immerse yourself in African-American culture? Here are 10 of our favorite destinations where you can pay homage to the impact and contributions African-Americans have made.
1. National Museum of African-American History and Culture – Washington D.C.
Visitors can peruse 37,000 objects relating to the visual and performing arts, civil rights, and segregation. After that, they can enjoy traditional meals of spicy oxtail and sweet potato pie at the museum’s Sweet Home Café.
2. Beale Street Historic District – Memphis, TN
During the ‘20s, Beale Street was alive and booming with nightclubs, restaurants, gambling, and theaters. Today, it's just as lively, with sounds of jazz, blues, and R&B music from some of the most influential African-American artists.
3. Dooky Chase’s Restaurant – New Orleans, LA
Barack Obama had less than four hours to spend in the city, and stopping for lunch at this iconic restaurant was at the top of his to-do list. It's also known as the “Queen of Creole Cuisine,”
4. Nicodemus National Historic Site – Bogue, KS
It is a wonderful way to learn more about this historic town that thrived during the Civil War. Today, it’s the only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi River.
5. Harriet Tubman National Historical Park – Auburn, NY
This courageous woman made missions to rescue and free other people, and she was the leader of the Underground Railroad, is one of the most legendary women in American history.
6. African-American Museum – Dallas, TX
The rich culture of African-American history throughout 38,000-square-foot structure. It also contains one of the largest collections of African-American Folk Art, so this museum is a definite must-see!
7. Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum – Detroit, MI
It not only celebrates the contributions of the pilots who defended the Nation and put their lives on the line, but it also gives honor to the host of navigators, mechanics, instructors, nurses, cooks, and crew chiefs who played a role in desegregating the military.
8. Congo Square – New Orleans, LA
This historic district was once the meeting place for freed Africans, where they would sing, dance, and give praise. And now, performers convene here daily to put on mesmerizing performances that pay homage to African-American history.
9. Natchez National Historical Park – Natchez, MS
The site preserves the structures from the American South, including the home of William Johnson – a mixed-race freed man who later became a barber and businessman. Visitors can also learn about the region’s socio-economic development and agricultural history pre- and post-Civil War.
10. The Center for Civil and Human Rights – Atlanta, GA
Visitors can receive a painful history lesson as they watch videos of marches, participate in a mock sit-in at a restaurant counter, and view the countless photos of those who were either arrested or killed during the fight for equal rights

Fort Washington
This will be the first you’re hearing of Prince George’s County on this list, but it won’t be the last. Fort Washington is one of Maryland’s and the country’s richest Black communities. Named after the original defense fort that protected Washington, D.C. during the Civil War, the city now has a Black majority population of 70%. This is followed by White (13.4%) and Asian (9.2%) populations. The median home value in Fort Washington is approximately $343K while the average household income is $115,000.
Livability lists Fort Washington’s workforce percentage at 65.1% while 40.5% of their population have earned a Bachelor’s degree or higher. 87.5% of homes in Fort Washington are owned while 12.5% of the town’s residents are renters. Similarly to Baldwin Hills and Windsor Hills, you’ll find that many notable people have lived in or around the Fort Washington
If you were wondering about Prince George’s County in Maryland, it’s clearly the place to be for wealthy, Black professionals and families. The next community on this list is Mitchellville, Maryland, which you can also find in the county. With a population of almost 11,000 people, the town’s population is 78.5% Black.
When it comes to the residents of the community, their age demographics are generally well spread out. While 27.5% of the population is under the age of 13, 28.5% is 25-44 and 30.1% is 45-64. The median home value is just over $350,000 with the average household income being $122K. Almost half their population (45.7%) has a Bachelor’s degree or higher with 76.8% of their population being in the workforce.
Mitchellville is another affluent Black community where most of its residents own their home with 91.5% of homes being owned and 8.5% being rented.
Rosaryville
Surprise! We have another town in Prince George’s County. As of 2010, Rosaryville has over 10,000 residents with a Black community of 60% with the White population coming in second at 34%. When comparing home value and household income, Rosaryville is definitely one of the most affluent communities in the country. The Maryland suburb has a home value average of $328K and a median household income of $128K. The community has over 100 businesses with 70% of their population still being members of the workforce. The town is another Maryland suburb where most of the residents are homeowners with 94% of homes being owned.
Woodmore
Now, when it comes to affluence, Woodmore is probably one of the most affluent on the list. Located in Prince George’s County, Woodmore is a Washington, D.C. suburb. When compared to the rest of the communities on this list, this Maryland town has one of the smallest populations with under 4,000 residents. The suburb also features the Country Club at Woodmore - a private gated community that houses hundreds of the town’s residents.
The Black community of Woodmore sits at 64.9% with the White population being the next largest group at 28.8%. The median home value of Woodmore is $444k while the household income sits at an average of $182,859. The unemployment rate in the community is low at under 5% and over ¾ of the community’s population is in the workforce. Lastly, most of the residents in Woodmore own their homes with only about 6% of the population renting.
If you’re ever in the area, be sure to visit Six Flags America which seemingly adds to the wealth and growth of the community.
New York
Located in Rockland County, the first New York community we have is Hillcrest. Considered a “bedroom suburb of New York City,” Hillcrest is a town where you’ll find that many of their residents commute to work in the City. With a population of just under 8000, their Black population is still prominent with over half (51.1%) of their residents being Black. The White community of Hillcrest sits at 25.58% while the Asian community represents 14.69% of the population.
The median home value in Hillcrest is $370K and the community has a larger-than-most median household income of $103K. In the bedroom suburb, you’ll find that over 75% of the homes are owned with around 23% of them being rented. They also have a wonderfully low unemployment rate at 3.4% which can be credited to the fact that the community offers a great amount of career opportunities for their residents with close to 150 businesses.
Uniondale
We’re now headed to New York’s Long Island to Uniondale. When compared to the other communities on this list, Uniondale is not as affluent; however, it is still one of the richest communities in the country with a majority Black population. A suburb of Nassau County, Uniondale has a pretty big population with close to 25K residents. While the Black percentage isn’t as large as it is in other cities, Uniondale is still predominantly Black with 55.53%. This is followed by its White (26.97%) and Asian (2.1%) populations. The residents of Uniondale have a median household income of $84,000 and a median home value of $350K.

Although East Atlanta was never an incorporated town, it first grew at the edge of Atlanta like a small town and it is, today, defined as being east of Moreland Avenue; south and west of I-20; and within the city limits. East Atlanta is a walkable intown neighborhood and continues to attract a range of buyers. It is comprised mainly of single-family homes although there are a few condos. In the last 15 years, there have also been numerous infill houses built.
The Porch Press neighborhood newspaper distributes by mail to around 2,000 households in the East Atlanta neighborhood. Home prices are usually determined by street and by size. Prior to the recession, homes sold for $80,000 to $600,000. Since then, houses under $300,000 have been the fastest to move. Investors have also been buying fixer-uppers, enlarging them, remodeling them and putting them back on the market, usually trying to stay just over or under the $300,000 price point, according to resident Henry Bryant, who is currently working on a book about the history of East Atlanta.
East Atlanta Village is a triangle formed by Moreland Avenue, Glenwood Avenue and Flat Shoals Avenue. Within its bounds are two banks, three insurance companies, three real estate companies, a coffee shop, multiple restaurants and bars. Less than a mile to the north is the Edgewood Retail District with a Target, Barnes & Noble, Lowe’s, Best Buy, banks, eateries and a Bed, Bath & Beyond. Three major grocery stores are located within a mile. The community is also near Atlanta Medical Center, Grady Hospital and Emory Midtown Hospital.
Public tennis courts are located within the neighborhood in Brownwood Park, which is a 13-acre city green space with a recreation center, picnic pavilion, children's playground, tennis and basketball courts. Half of the park is undeveloped with a nature walk running through it and it is located one block from the East Atlanta Village.
The public schools serving East Atlanta are Burgess-Peterson Academy, Coan Middle and Maynard Jackson High School.

From Europeans heading west in the 19th century to immigrants searching for a fresh start, leaving home in pursuit of opportunity has long been a central part of the American dream. Today, cities and local areas across the United States are actually competing for new residents. Just 11.2% of Americans moved in the past year -- an all-time low.
These days, most people who move do not relocate very far, but move within the same general area. With the presence of friends and family, a job, and familiar general surrounding, people often move to improve living conditions. Other reasons could include end of a lease, moving to be closer to work or family, to a better school district, to cut costs, or to a more suitable neighborhood, among many other reasons.
Of course, just as different cities are more or less expensive places to live, moving costs within different U.S. cities vary significantly.
24/7 Wall St. reviewed the total cost to move within major U.S. metro areas and ranked the top 25 most expensive cities to move. The ranking is based on calculations by real estate data company Moving Inc. that reflect the costs of moving within the principal city of large metropolitan regions. We also considered the median price of one month’s rent plus a deposit for a three bedroom housing unit.

Live the Life: East Cobb
East Cobb is a northern suburb of Atlanta and includes Marietta, a portion of Roswell and smaller slivers of Vinings and Kennesaw. East Cobbers enjoy the many parks, recreational activities and community events - many of which are held in Merchant's Walk, which is the unofficial town center.
East Cobb is home to many of the top high schools in the South. With low Cobb County taxes, East Cobb has become a premier destination known for its affordable living and community events.
