The Food Factory - most popular restaurant in Mauritius

The Food Factory in Grand Baie is what everyone is talking about, despite Burger King opening in Mauritius. We go check it out to find out what makes this local eatery so popular.

Three guys with a dream and a lot of hard work and perseverance have turned this kebab and pizza place into a must try restaurant. The staff are expertly trained, coming from high end hotels where they lost their jobs to to the current crisis, and work happily as a team to bring you the freshest food.

The lunch time specials at The Food Factory are really good value for money but certainly do not skimp on quality and quantity. The pizza is the best we have had in Mauritius and actually probably the cheapest.

This is more than just a restaurant though, it is truly an experience. You leave with a full belly and a warm heart.

Camp De Masque Mauritius is a great day out that makes you happy

From the giant pineapple to the abundant street foods and welcoming locals, this is a village that makes you happy. A stroll around the huge La Unity chimney, walking the back streets, eating on the street, looking at the mountains, or exploring the dirt roads for greenhouses is all in this great day out.

The start was a huge pineapple that lead us into the town where we found easy parking. The first stop was dhal puri served by friendly Ravin. He gave us a look at his kitchen and explained that he used to work at the top hotel in Mauritius, the Oberoi. He started his business a year ago and is so glad he did, as it is going from strength to strength. We were also glad, as his dhal puri was great.

We then strolled down the road and got some samosas and a chili bite. The non-tourist villages know how to add a hot chili. More views of the street life lead us to a motorbike selling pudding pudding coconut powder Riki giggled like a schoolgirl as we tucked into our sago, tapioca, maize jellies.

Off down a side street where the houses have tiled walls. We got invited into a tailor shop where they were making men's fashion pants. It was a fascinating look into the back street industry. Further down the street I told the story of how Camp De Masque got its name and then we were off to the tallest chimney in Mauritius after a short stop at the not very teal Teal river.

La Unity is so impressive, words do not do her justice. I have yet to see such craftsmanship in stonework. There was an odd building that had steps leading up to windows, at the time I thought it was very bizarre, but on reviewing the footage I did notice the old door hinges.

Our final stop was a greenhouse farm. It was huge and I now know why tomatoes are so cheap here. We drove down a very bad dirt road and ended up in the wrong place, I'm guessing. I have never seen so much industrial agriculture in Mauritius. I explained why the bananas and pineapples from the region are the best, and showed a very sweet pineapple.

I closed out the trip with a short musical number as it's a new song were are trying out and I would appreciate any feedback.

Mauritius Port Louis Central Market Food

The capital city of Mauritius is Port Louis. There are a number of attractions, including the Caudan Waterfront and the Port Louis market (Central market). In order to experience the street food of Mauritius you should head towards the Port Louis Market. There is a variety of fresh produce and the not to be missed dal puri. We ate dal puri and danced to sega music on the streets of the city.

I visited again in 2017, here is my latest Mauritian Street Food video:

Price of vegetables in Mauritius - Vacoas Market

We return to Vacoas, now known as the Manhatten of Mauritius, to visit the fruit, vegetable, and food market. We started our adventure with a new fruit for us, custard apple, and then onto some old favorites, Chinese guavas, and gatos. Lining the outside of the market are dozens of food stands and snacks, and they were filled with new and exciting eats. Vacoas has become a place of innovation in new and exciting food, as well as bringing the old favorites and historic classics.

It's not only about the great food, it is also a massive structure filled with vegetables, fruits, and clothing. We walked around and checked the price, no tomatoes for us, wow, the prices were extreme, but there were a few other bargains out there.

Riche Fond / Saint Julien Mauritius Vlog

We adventure around Riche Fond and Saint Julien in the Flacq district. Starting with a fantastic fruit cup, probably the best I have had. We then walked through the spiritual park. One end has a wall where the old railway went and the other has a great round bridge. We explored a gold Hindu temple and then drove to a blue lake, where I met a wasp nest collector. He told me a bit about the history of the region, and Mauritius.

We stopped at St. Julien church, which has a relic from pope Jean-Paul and we even found a national monument in the graveyard. In the hunt for food we came across a great snack shop, but that is for another video.

The Cuisine | My Mauritius. My Experience with Angie Khumalo

Visit the Island of Mauritius:

Mauritius is a delicious destination. It’s foodie heaven. This tiny little Indian Ocean island paradise is a fragrant pressure cooker of the cuisines of many nations that have had a hand in its history, its culture and its heritage.

It’s a blend of the exotic and spicy; the soothing and enticing; the fresh and pickled. It makes a Mauritian holiday as yum-yum as it is relaxing and beautiful.
