Bicycle Touring Åland Islands Day 5 - Back To Åland

Bicycle Touring Åland Islands Day 6 - The 30 Euro Campground

On the 6th day of our tour around Åland we start making our way back to Mariehamn. After a couple of stops at a Lemonade Factory and a nice park along a canal we make it to Gröna Udden Campground. By far the most expensive campground of the week. We have to fork up 30 Euros stay sleep on the ground. Insane!

Bicycle Touring Åland Islands Day 2 - Sweet Gravel Riding

The second day of our tour of The Åland Islands takes us to the north part of the Island. We battle som chilly winds but get to experience lovely rolling landscapes and sweet gravel riding.

We finally end up at a campground in Bomarsund, conveniently located about 10 km from the next days first ferry. Felt like we were suddenly surrounded by other bicycle tourists. I counted to at least 20 other bicycle tourists at this campground. Must be due to the proximity to the ferry.

Bicycle Touring Ålands Islands Day 7 - Completing The Tour

On the 7th and final day of our tour around the Åland Islands we get up super early to catch the ferry back to the Swedish mainland. After enjoying a nice (and to big) breakfast buffet on the ferry we start cycling towards our end destination Norrtälje, where our car and children are waiting for us.

BIKEPACKING IN ÅLAND - In the middle of Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden

Åland is a group of Finnish islands halfway across the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden. With population of less than 30 000 it sounded quiet enough for my attempt to get away while staying isolated.

It's now been close to 1,5 years since the beginning of the pandemic, and this short weekender was my first chance to spend some quality time completely alone surrounded by nature.

It made me realize how much I really need it.

Borrowed bike, wild camping kit and no plan. Forgot to pack coffee.

Tour de Van - Episode 19 - By ferry to Åland - We get lost in Mariehamn!

Tour de Van, this is Elin and Emilia... follow their adventures.

Elin and Emilia chose to take the small ferries to Ahvenanmaa/Åland. That way they get to see more than if they were to take a direct ferry. There are a lot of places to see, but from all the recommendations they got they end up visiting Mariehamn, Kastelholm and Soltuna. Check out the video for a few Åland tips and subscribe to never miss a part of the adventure around Europe!

Seldom-seen Scandinavia: Ferry to the Åland Islands | Stockholm to Mariehamn

Watch how a T1D goes from Sweden to the Åland Islands on a ferry, and how I got some bad news from back home upon arrival. Will a death in the family derail this whole trip, when it just started? Is there some cosmic meaning in my arriving at a place known for sailing, when sailing-loving Grandpa just died at the age of 96?

This video is a look back at Day 3 of an epic trip that lasted over four months and took in 18 countries, mostly in the stunning lesser-visited parts of Europe. Chock full of all the travel tales *and* the insulin ups and downs.

Going to the Finnish island of Åland - My take-aways

My take-aways from going to the Finnish island of Åland. I took the Viking Line Baltic ferry Viking Grace from Stockholm, through the Stockholm archipelago to Åland islands and changed in Mariehamn to Viking Amorella back to Stockholm. This day trip to Aland islands is mostly to do tax free shopping and of course sing Finnish karaoke. How was the sun deck? How was the food? What could you do onboard? This questions are answered in the video.

My channel is packed with Swedish tutorials and language challenges where you can learn everything from nouns and verbs to grammar and special Swedish words. I also talk about places in Sweden and where you as a tourist can visit. I have made youtube videos for over 10 years and 10 Swedish Words started with me explaining 10 Swedish words that don't exist in English. You can also find videos about Norse Mythology, my deep-talk series Good Talk (which now has its own channel) and other info about Sweden and Swedish culture.

The Fight for Åland | The Finnish Islands That Wanted to Be Swedish

The Åland Islands lies between Sweden and Finland, and they caused great tension between these countries a hundred years ago. Let's explore this archipelago and see what all the fuss was about.

Åland is a pretty strange place in Scandinavia. It belongs to Finland, but it’s a self-governing territory with its own laws. And the people of Åland speak Swedish, and they share a lot of Swedish culture. Finland has sovereignty over the islands, but for a long time they wanted to belong to Sweden instead.

Less than 30 000 people live in Åland, on an area of roughly 1 500 square kilometers. And the main city of Åland is Mariehamn, a bustling metropolis of 11 000 people. Despite its small size, Åland has been of immense importance to the maritime traffic on the Baltic, as well as the military.

In this video I discuss the history of Åland as well as the politics leading up to the modern day. I also visit the Åland Museum of Cultural History, and the Maritime Museum which includes the four-masted steel barque Pommern. You will also see views from the western and eastern harbor of Mariehamn, as well as other areas of the city.

I didn't forget to mention the local brewery Stallhagen as well, and I also discuss the famous Champagne Schooner that sank close to the island of Föglö in the Åland archipelago. It was found with 145 intact bottles of champagne, and 5 bottles of beer - which were later auctioned off.

All this and a lot more, as I visit the Åland Islands - a strange little self-governing territory in the middle of the Baltic Sea.

Bicycle Touring Åland Islands Day 5 - Back To Åland

We hop on the ferry back to Åland in the morning to avoid the rain (or so we though) and to spare Malin's ill back. Once on Åland we find a lovely bike path on the south part of the Island and end up at Svinö Camping Lodge, where we get the place almost to ourselves.

Bicycle Touring Åland Islands Day 4 - The Finnish Archipelago Trail

We joined up with the Finnish Archipelago Trail towards Turkku on the 4th day of our Bike Tour around the Åland Islands. We had some lovely weather in the morning, but had to cut the day short due to Malin's back pains. We just barely made it to Naantali Camping before the rain was upon us. Finland was a really nice country to tour in and I'm certain we'll be back soon.

Bicycle Touring The Åland Islands Day 1 - Help! My Wife Is Faster Than Me

In the first installment of my most recent bike tour my wife Malin and I leave the Swedish mainland and hop on a ferry to the Åland Islands located right between Sweden and Finland. The Åland Islands is an autonomous region located in the Baltic Sea, belonging to Finland but all of its inhabitants are speaking Swedish.

We are celebrating me turning 40 and at the same time being married for 10 years by doing a week-long tour in the Åland Islands. We get off to a great start with (mostly) pleasant weather during our first day of the tour. Follow along, new episodes will drop every Thursday for the

Finland: Turku and the Åland Islands Bike Tour with Freewheeling Adventures

Not exactly Swedish, but not entirely Finnish either, the autonomous Åland Islands, a rocky chain of some 6500 skerries and islands spread across Finland’s Archipelago Sea, are a unique Nordic cycling destination. Scraped flat by enormous glaciers during the last Ice Age, the islands of Åland – and the nearby Turku Archipelago – are a cyclist’s dream, laced with empty roads, coastal vistas, and tiny, brightly coloured seaside villages.

Starting in Turku, Finland’s oldest city, the route snakes westward through the southernmost islands of the Turku Archipelago before traveling via ferry to Åland. Turku, the most important city in Finland’s long history, is the gateway to the Archipelago Sea, and, in our opinion, the perfect starting point to explore the region’s islands.

Of Åland’s many islands, your route circumnavigates Fasta Åland, the largest and most populous, home to the largest city, Mariehamn, and the hulking Russian fortress of Bomarsund. Hopping on and off several small bike ferries, the route weaves around the coast, finishing back in Mariehamn where your trip ends. This charming maritime city has myriad options for further exploration of the Baltics, with direct flights and ferries to Stockholm, Helsinki, Riga and Tallinn.
