The World's Most Dangerous Approach - Paro, Bhutan
Join me on a flight with Bhutan Airlines (Tashi Air) A319 from Kathmandu to Paro, Bhutan. Paro Airport is situated in between mountains and valleys at 7,332 ft above sea level. The approach is well considered as one of the most dangerous and most spectacular in the world. Check out the amazing landing footage.

Join us for a spectacular and thrilling, up close, documentary look at the world’s most dangerous airport landing at Paro airport in Bhutan. Make sure you watch all the way to the end of the video to catch the sped up, bird’s eye view of the fabulous and graceful twisting and turning of the aeroplane on its approach to the landing strip of Paro airport, the sole international airport of Bhutan located six kilometres from Paro in a very deep valley on the bank of the river Paro Chhu, and how the runway suddenly appears from nowhere. It takes a real aviation expert and a very steady hand to make a safe landing at Paro airport!
In this video, we fly from Kathmandu airport in Nepal to Paro airport in Bhutan using Bhutan airlines. After a brief look inside Kathmandu airport’s executive airport lounge, we board our flight and meet the chief pilot of Bhutan airlines – we’re in safe hands; only a handful of trained captains are qualified and certified to land at Paro airport and it takes a minimum of eight to ten years of intensive training to become a captain.
We examine the runway at Kathmandu airport which is very bumpy and, interestingly, has no taxiways to the main runway, necessitating the use of some tricky manoeuvres and, needless to say, keen attention paid to air traffic control.
The flight is only forty minutes long but the flight is still packed with events and sights. In the video, we see most of the top ten highest mountains in the world within the Himalayas including Mount Makalu, Mount Lhotse and the tallest of all, Mount Everest. We also see the mountains of Bhutan within the Himalayan mountain range including Jomolhari and Jitchu Drake. The pictures of the snow capped mountains of the Himalayas are breath taking and we hear the captain’s opinions of why he thinks there is less snow now than there was in previous years.
We also enjoy lunch with champagne on board and we enjoy sharing a specially made cake with the Bhutan airlines crew to celebrate our travelling with them to the legendary Paro airport of Bhutan.
Paro airport is surrounded by mountains as high as 5500 metres and only has a single runway of length 1964 metres. Its single terminal was constructed in 1999 and it is a hub for two airlines: Bhutan airlines and Druk Air. Paro airport is such a difficult airport to land in that it can only be used in visual meteorological conditions and operational hours are restricted to daylight hours between sunrise and sunset.

There is no Direct Bus between Dhaka to Bhutan. If you want to travel from Dhaka to Bhutan by road, you have to go through India. Best route to reach Thimphu or Paro from Dhaka is to take an Indian transit visa. Then travel Dhaka to Burimari by bus. After immigration formalities, Cross border from Burimari to Changrabandha, India. Then hire a car to travel from Changrabandha to Jaigaon, Indian border town with Bhutan. After having immigration in Jaigaon border, walk from Jaigaon to Phuentsholing. In Phuentsholing, you have to take on arrival visa for Bhutan. But, to get visa, you have to fill up a form and submit 1 Photo, hotel booking and passport photocopy. Bhutan immigration office will immediately issue tourist Visa. From Phuentsholing you have to ride on Bus or hire a car to reach Thimphu or Paro city.

দক্ষিন এশিয়ার ছোট্ট একটি দেশ ভুটান । এটি বজ্র ড্রাগনের দেশ নামেও পরিচিত । ভুটান পৃথিবীর একমাত্র কার্বন নেগেটিভ দেশ । ভুটানের আয়তনের প্রায় ৭০ ভাগ বনভুমি রয়েছে । এজন্য ভুটানকে বলা হয় অক্সিজেনের দেশ । ভুটান পৃথিবীর অন্যতম সুখী দেশ । আমরা জানি যেকোন দেশের উন্নয়ন এর মাপকাঠি হল GDP বা GNP কিন্তু ভুটান এর ক্ষেত্রে এটি ব্যাতিক্রম । তাদের উন্নয়ন এর মাপকাঠি হল GNH অর্থাৎ Gross National Happiness ।
আমাদের ভুটান ট্যুরের গ্রুপের সদস্য সংখ্যা ছিল আট জন । আর আমাদেরর যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল কল্য্যানপুর বাস টার্মিনাল থেকে । রাতের বাসে ঢাকা থেকে বুড়িমারি পৌছাই সকাল ৭ টায় ।
তারপর ফ্রেশ হয়ে বুড়ির হোটেল এ নাস্তা সেরে নেই । এবার ইমিগ্রেশন এর পালা । বুড়িমাড়ি পোর্ট এ ইমিগ্রেশন চলে বাস এর সিরিয়াল অনুযায়ী । স্পীড মানি ছাড়া ইমিগ্রেশন কমপ্লি্ট করা খুব কঠিন । আর ট্রাভেল ট্যাক্স চেস্টা করবেন ঢাকা থেকে দিয়ে যেতে। তাহলে বর্ডারে সময় বাচবে । চ্যংরাবান্ধাতেও একই অবস্থা ।
আমরা ঈদের সময় গিয়েছিলাম তাই আমাদের দুই দেশের ইমিগ্রেশন শেষ করতে প্রায় ১টা বাজে। তারপর কারেন্সি এক্সচেঞ্জ করি এবং একটি জিপ নিয়ে জয়গাও এর উদ্দ্যেশ্যে রওনা দেই । চ্যংরাবান্ধা থেকে জয়গাও এর দুরত্ত প্রায় ১০০ কিলোমিটার এর মতো । যেতে সময় লাগে ৩ ঘন্টা । ভুটানে কিন্তু ইন্ডিয়ান রুপি চলে । তাই সব টাকা বা ডলার রুপিতে কনভার্ট করে নিবেন । ইন্ডিয়ান রুপি এবং ভুটানিজ় নিউলট্রাম এর মান সমান ।
আমরা জয়গাও পৌছাই প্রায় ৪ টার দিকে । জয়গাও এর ইমিগ্রেশন অফিস খুব নিরিবিলি । সাধারনত মানুষের তেমন ভিড় থাকেনা । জয়গাও এর ইমিগ্রেশন শেষ করে আমরা চলে ভুটান গেট । মেইন গেট দিয়ে গাড়ি চলাচল করে । এর পাশেই হেটে যাওয়ার জন্য ছোট গেট আছে । তারপর পায়ে হেটে ভুটান প্রবেশ করি । ফুন্টশোলিং থেকে ভুটানের ভিসা নিয়ে এবং ইমিগ্রেশন শেষ করে থিম্ফুর উদ্যেশ্যে রওনা দেই প্রায় সারে পাচ টায় এবং থিম্ফু পৌছাই রাত ১১ টায়।
ভিসাঃ
বাংলাদেশের সাথে যেহেতু ভুটানের কোন বর্ডার নেই তাই বাই রোডে ভুটান জেতে হলে ভারতের ট্রানজিট ভিসা লাগবে । ট্রানজিট ভিসার জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় কাগজপত্র হল
১. মিনিমাম ৬ মাস মেয়াদসহ পাসপোর্ট এবং পাসপোর্টের কপি ।
২. জাতীয় পরিচয় পত্র অথবা জন্ম নিবন্ধন এর কপি ।
৩. বিদ্যুত বিল অথবা গ্যাস বিল অথবা যেকোন ইউটিলিটি বিলের কপি
৪. ব্যাংক স্টেটমেন্ট অথবা ডলার এন্ডোর্সমেন্ট অথবা ইন্টারনেশনাল ক্রেডিট কার্ড এর কপি ।
৫. পেশার প্রমানপত্র অর্থাৎ চাকুরীজিবী হলে এন ও সি, ব্যবসায়ী হলে ট্রেড লাইসেন্স, স্টুডেন্ট হলে আইডি কার্ডের কপি ইত্যাদি ।
৬. ১ কপি ছবি ২ বাই ২ সাইজের সাদা ব্যাকগ্রউন্ড সহ ।
৭. ঢাকা বুড়িমারি ঢাকা বাস টিকেট ।
৮. হোটেল বুকিং ।
৯. পুর্বের ভিসা থাকলে এর কপি ।
১০। সকল পুরাতন পাসপোর্ট জমা দিতে হবে
সবচেয়ে গুরুত্তপুর্ন হল ভিসার জন্য এপ্লাই করার তারিখ । ট্রানজিট ভিসার মেয়াদ যেহেতু খুব কম মাত্র ১৫ দিন তাই খুব হিসাব নিকাশ করে এপ্লাই করতে হবে । সবচেয়ে বেস্ট টাইম হল যাত্রার তারিখ থেকে ৭ অথবা ৮ কর্ম দিবস আগে জমা দেয়া । এর চেয়ে বেশী আগে জমা দিলে টুর শেষ হওয়ার আগেই ভিসার মেয়াদ শেষ হয়ে জেতে পারে । আবার এর চেয়ে পরে জমা দিলে ভিসা পাওয়ার আগেই ট্রাভেল ডেট পার হয়ে যাবে ।
ভুটানের ভিসার জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় কাগজঃ
১. পাসপোর্ট এবং পাসপোর্ট এর কপি
২. ১ কপি পাসপোর্ট সাইজ ছবি
৩. হোটেল বুকিং এর কপি
৪. পুরনকৃত ভিসা এপ্লিকেশন ফর্ম (এপ্লিকেশন ফরম ইমিগ্রেশন অফিসেই পওয়া যায়)
এই কাগজগুলো জমা দেওয়ার পর আমাদেরকে ৭ দিনের ভিসা দেয়। এই ভিসা শুধু থিম্ফু আর পারোর জন্য । এর বাইরে অন্য কোথাও যেতে হলে থিম্ফু থেকে পারমিশন নিতে হবে ।
যাতায়াত খরচঃ
ঢাকা থেকে বুড়িমারী পর্জন্ত নন এসি বাস ভাড়া ৬৫০টাকা । আর এসি বাস ভাড়া ৮৫০ টাকা । তবে শ্যামলির এসি বাস শিলিগুরি পর্যন্ত ভাড়া ১৫০০ টাকা । চ্যংড়াবান্ধা থেকে জয়গাও এর ট্যাক্সি ভাড়া ১২০০ থেকে ১৫০০ রুপী আর টাটা সুমু এর ভাড়া ২২০০-২৫০০ রুপী । ট্যাক্সিতে ৪জন আর টাটা সুমো তে ৮ জন যাওয়া যায় । আমরা আমদের গাইড এর মাধ্যমে ৫দিনের জন্য গাড়ি বুক করি । ফুন্টশোলিং থেকে আমাদের পিক করবে এবং ফুন্টশোলিং এ আমাদের ড্রপ করবে । গাড়ি ভাড়া ১৮৫০০ রুপি ।

Here’s presenting the first part of the Bhutan Series Episode in Paro. I went straight to Paro as first part of my road trip in the country. The drive from Phuntsholing took about 4 hours.
The entire budget of my Bhutan trip was close to INR 25k. You can carry cash everywhere in Indian currency in Bhutan as it is accepted. Some things about Paro below:
1. The place where I stayed at in Paro is called Ama’s Village Lodge. You can book the place here -
2. The cost of entry to Taktsang Goempa is INR 500 and a round trip with any driver will cost INR 1000 from your lodge
3. You can contact Mr. Yonten Norbu for driving you around Bhutan if you are visiting. His number is +975 17672515 , my experience with him was extremely nice. He was a perfect gentleman who ensured my safety and also made sure my experience in Bhutan was memorable.
4. If you are visiting Bhutan, I would highly advice you to get a local sim for contacting tour agencies or driver. A local sim will be available for INR 200 at Phuntsholing.
5. Other places that you can visit in Paro are - Paro Dzong and you can get a Hot Stone bath which is very popular in the area

Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the Himalayas’ eastern edge, is known for its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys. In the High Himalayas, peaks such as 7,326m Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations. Paro Taktsang monastery (also known as Tiger’s Nest) clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley.
Bhutan is a landlocked country in the Eastern Himalayas. It is bordered by China to the north and India to the south. Nepal and Bangladesh are located in proximity to Bhutan but do not share a land border. The country has a population of over 754,000[12] and a territory of 38,394 square kilometers (14,824 sq mi) which ranks 133rd in terms of land area. Bhutan is a constitutional monarchy with Mahayana Buddhism as the state religion.
The subalpine Himalayan mountains in the north rise from the country's lush subtropical plains in the south.[13] In the Bhutanese Himalayas, there are peaks higher than 7,000 meters (23,000 ft) above sea level. Gangkhar Puensum is Bhutan's highest peak and may also be the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.[14] The wildlife of Bhutan is notable for its diversity, including the Himalayan takin. The largest city in Bhutan is the capital Thimphu.

আমরা Indian Transit ভিসা করার আগেই যে Hotels বুকিং দিয়েছিলাম and Bus Ticket ক্রয় করেছিলাম টিকেট শ্যামলী পরিবহনের তা দিয়েই ২৯ নভেম্বর ২০১৮ তারিখ রাত ৮:৩০ মিনিটে আমরা রওনা করি আরামবাগ থেকে. তারপর আমরা রাত বারোটা পঞ্চাশ মিনিটে সেখানে হালকা কিছু খাওয়া-দাওয়া করে সফরসঙ্গী মাহবুব ও সিরাজ উদ্দিন কে নিয়ে আমরা বাসে জার্নি করে ঠিক ভোর ছয়টা চল্লিশ মিনিটে বুড়িমারী | শীতকাল যেহেতু, এখনো sun ওঠেনি তারপর সেখানে Burir Hotel এ Duck & পরোটা দিয়ে সকালে নাস্তা সেরে নিলাম | তারপর আমরা ৩০ শে নভেম্বর ২০১৮ ভারতে | আমরা যাব ভুটানের সীমানায় বর্ডারে যেখানে আমাদের জন্য ভুটানের ট্যাক্সি দুপুর থেকে, আমরা সকালে যখন বর্ডার ক্রস করে যেতে | আমাদের তখন সময় আমরা সাড়ে দশটার মধ্যেই ওদের ভাড়া কিন্তু মুহূর্তে সঠিক মনে করতে পারছি না কত টাকা পড়েছিল, most probably দেড় হাজার রুপিতে আমরা একটি ট্যাক্সি নিয়ে জয়পুর বর্ডারের দিকে যাচ্ছি ও আমাদের ছিল কারণ পথিমধ্যে গাড়ির সর্বোচ্চ গতিসীমা ছিল ১৫ থেকে ২০ কিলোমিটার পার আওয়ার, তারপর আবার ৪০-৫০,৬০ প্রতি ঘন্টায় গতিতে গাড়ি চলে। এরই মধ্যে রাস্তার দুপাশে দেখতে পেয়েছিলাম সমতল ভুমিতে চা বাগান। আনুমানিক ২:৪০ মিনিটে দুপুরে আমরা Indian বহির্গমন সিল নিয়ে ভুটানে প্রবেশ করি এরই মধ্যে আমাদের যে গাড়ি চালক ট্যাক্সি ড্রাইভারকে আমরা ফোন দিই এবং বর্ডারে আমাদের সামনে চলে আসে, সে গাড়ি পার্কিংয়ে রেখে আসছে হেঁটে, আমাদের সাথে দেখা হলে তখন গাড়ি নিয়ে আসবে। আমাদের সাথে তার দেখাও হল। ভিসার কার্যক্রম আমরা শেষ করলাম, যা অন এরাইভেল ছিল। এখনো On Arrival Visa কিন্তু এখন নির্দিষ্ট ভিসা ফি রয়েছে কিন্তু তখন ছিলনা। সাড়ে তিনটার আগেই আমাদের তিনজনেরই হয়ে গেল। গাড়ি নিয়ে আসলো এবং আমরা যাত্রা শুরু করলাম আমাদের গন্তব্য পারো। পাহাড়ি রাস্তা ধরে গাড়ি-এগিয়ে চলছিল, সূর্যি মামা অস্ত গেল পাটে, অার পাহাড়ের গা বেয়ে এগিয়ে চললাম । দুপুরে আর তেমন কোন কিছুই খাওয়া-দাওয়া হয়নি, পথিমধ্যে ভারতীয় সীমানায় চা এবং ভুটানের প্রবেশের কিছু পরে সূর্যাস্ত দেখার সময়ে কমলা ব্যতীত। দেরী হয়ে যাচ্ছিল আর তাই আমরা যাত্রা বিরতি না দিয়ে সন্ধ্যে ঠিক সাতটার দিকে সোনামস রেস্টুরেন্ট নামে একটি রেস্টুরেন্টের সামনে থামালো। জায়গাটির নাম ওয়ংখা, চুখা জেলার। ভুটানের রেস্টুরেন্ট গুলোতে ম্যাক্সিমামই শুকোরের মাংস থাকে, তাই আমাদের মুসলিমদের এবং যারা পর্ক Avoid করেন তাদের জন্য অনেকটাই বিব্রতকর অবস্থা সৃষ্টি হয়। তাই তাদের কিচেন সম্পর্কে জানতে হয়, যে অালাদা কি না! এই বিষয়ে আমরা ড্রাইভারকে আগেই বলে রেখেছিলাম, এবং সে আমাদেরকে আশ্বস্ত করেছিল যে এখানে পর্কের রান্না ও প্রক্রিয়া অালাদা। তাই সেখানে কিছু খাওয়া দাওয়া সেরে, পাশে একটা সুপার শপ থেকে আমরা কিছু শুকনো খাবার ও পানীয় কিনে নিলাম। তারপর রাতের অন্ধকারের অনেকটা পথ পার হয়ে আমরা চলে গেলাম পারো শহরে।

Indians Traveling To Bhutan By Road, Air | How To Get The Permit For Bhutan | New Rules For Indians
There is something so magical about Bhutan. It’s also the happiest country in the world. This place has all the capability to touch your soul with its simplicity. I was fortunate enough to visit it last year. With the new rules coming into picture, now Indians have to pay additional money towards SDF in order to visit Bhutan. So, in this video, I have answered the question How to Plan a Perfect Bhutan Tour from India? in detail. I have talked about all the rules, details about the documents and guidance to help you plan your tour to Bhutan without any hassle:
1. Do you need a Passport to Visit Bhutan?
Not necessarily. If you have a passport then well and good. If not then, Voter ID card will work. Please note that Aadhar Card won’t suffice. You need to have either a passport or a Voter ID card.
2. How to enter Bhutan by road and flight?
Direct flight to Paro (that is Bhutan’s only International airport). You have direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Mumbai and Bagdogra. Next comes how to reach Bhutan by road and this is even I recommend. You can easily enter Bhutan by road by reaching Jaigaon town in West Bengal. It is 4.3 kms from the border town of Bhutan called Phuentsholing. You can take a flight to Bagdogra and wahan se take private cabs. They charge around INR 2500 for small vehicles and around 3500 Rs for SUVs
3. Can you take an Indian Car to Bhutan?
You can hire cabs in Bhutan but in case you are taking your own car then you will have to obtain a permit for the car from the Regional Transport Office in Phuensholing for a fee of about ng 200.
4. Do you need a Visa?
As an Indian national, you don't need a Visa to enter Bhutan but you would need to take a permit. You can get this permit from the Immigration office in Phuentsholing if you are traveling by road. If you are taking the flight, then the permit can be taken from Paro International Airport. This permit will allow you to stay in the country for 7 days and visit two major cities Paro and Thimphu. Immigration office in Phuentsholing is open from 9-5PM. The entire process can take 2-3 hours’ time. Remember to be patient. A few documents are required:
A. A duly filled form which you can avail at the gate of the Immigration office
B. Copy of your Voter’s ID or Passport
C. An Itinerary of 7 days on an A4 Sheet
D. Hotel booking proof of at least the first night in Bhutan.
E. 2 Passport Size Photographs
F. If you are traveling solo to Bhutan then you would need to submit a letter of undertaking addressed to the Regional Director. This is to declare that you are traveling solo in Bhutan and as a solo traveller, you are responsible for your travel and safety.
6. Do Indians have to pay anything extra to visit Bhutan?
Rules have changed now. Until last year, Indians didn’t have to pay any money but from July 2020, Now, Indians have to pay INR1200/day. This is called SDF, Sustainable Development Fee.
7. How to avail the local Sim Card in Bhutan? How much to recharge for?
You can avail Bhutanese sim card using this permit. You can take it at this office itself. A sim card would cost you 100 and recharge of 299 would be sufficient for 7 days even if you need to use the data pack.
8. How to book an affordable hotel in Bhutan (Thimpu, Paro)?
There are many hotels. On an average, you can spend 1000-1500 for a decent hotel
9. Does Indian currency work in Bhutan?
The Bhutanese currency is equivalent to the value of Indian currency. You can easily use 5,10,20,50,100 Rs Indian notes in Bhutan. However, 500 and 2000 Rs notes are not valid in the country. Don’t rely on the ATM machine as most of the Indian cards might not work in Bhutan.
10. When is the best time to Visit Bhutan?
Other than the Monsoon season, anytime of the year is good to visit Bhutan. However, you can find the best weather from October to December.
11. What to pack for Bhutan?
1. You are required to cover your head and wear full clothes while visiting the place of worship
2. Comfortable shoes and hiking shoes if you are planning to go for the hike/trek
3. Raincoat and umbrella
4. A light jacket or wind-cheater
12. Can you do backpacking in Bhutan?
