Best Time to Visit Jamaica for Weather

The best time to travel to Jamaica takes advantage of the dry season. The worst time to visit is during hurricane season.

More tips:

This popular Caribbean island is so dry during the winter and spring that it attracts many ships on western Caribbean cruises. It also appeals to northerners who want to get away from snow and cold temperatures.

Cruise visitors usually go to Ocho Rios or Montego Bay on the north coast of the island. More recently, Falmouth has become another active port. Resort visitors also flock to Montego Bay along with Negril on the western tip.

Thirty years of average weather data for Montego Bay and Kingston, capital of Jamaica, can provide some clues on the best and worst months for weather.

TEMPERATURES
Montego Bay maintains average high temperatures from the low 80s Fahrenheit or high 20s Celsius to the high 80s Fahrenheit or low 30s Celsius throughout the year, according to the Jamaica Tourist Board.

December through March has an average high of about 83 Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. That’s a good level for any land activities.

But nighttime temperatures drop low enough to make seawater cool in the mornings, especially with a wind chill factor from trade winds.

The average low temperature ranges reaches 69 degrees Fahrenheit or about 21 Celsius in January.

It climbs to about 75 Fahrenheit or about 24 Celsius from May through September, which is ideal for comfortable water temperatures.

Average daytime high temperatures reach nearly 90 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius during the same late spring to early fall months. They make Jamaica one of the hottest destinations in the Caribbean.

RAINFALL
Montego Bay historically has about one inch of rain in March, the driest month of the year.

April and July are the next driest at two inches, followed by January and February at three inches.

The area has a brief rainy season in May and June with about four to five inches of rain. Rainfall often drops in July and starts to climb again until it reaches a high point in October during the peak of the Caribbean hurricane season.

March also has the fewest number of days that it rains each each with an average of five. April and July again are the next best with seven, followed by December through February with eight to nine.

Months with the highest number of rain days are May and September through November.

Temperature averages are fairly consistent over time, but actual rainfall each year may vary greatly versus past years.

Anyone planning a Caribbean vacation should keep Jamaica’s average weather in mind when choosing the best months to go.

But they also should know that actual rainfall may be much more or much less than past totals.

Best Time to Visit the Caribbean for Vacation

The best time to visit the Caribbean for vacation depends on avoiding the annual hurricane season.

* Please SUBSCRIBE to get more videos *

The Caribbean attracts vacationers because of year-round sunny weather, mild temperatures and cooling breezes. But the hurricane season can ruin everything.

Average Caribbean weather is usually in the mid to upper 80s during the day most months of the year. Most locations have little variance in the high temperatures. Rainfall is usually mild except for the fall months.

CARIBBEAN TEMPERATURES

The average high temperature for most Caribbean destinations ranges from the low 80s Fahrenheit during the winter months to the mid- to upper-80s Fahrenheit during the summer, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

Some locations such as Cozumel and Cayman Islands see daytime highs exceeding 90 degrees in the summer.

Average lows are usually in the 70s except for northern destinations such as the Bahamas.

MONTHLY RAINFALL

While Caribbean temperatures are consistent, rainfall varies greatly from one destination to another.

The island of Aruba has an arid landscape with a peak rainfall in November of about 3 inches compared to a peak of nearly 15 inches for Dominica.

Rainfall increases in frequency and duration in the months of June through November because of hurricane season.

The high point for rain during that season is September and October, which are the months with the fewest visitors to most destinations in the region.

CARIBBEAN HURRICANE SEASON

The Caribbean hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 each year.

The Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and North Atlantic face an average of 11 tropical cyclones (storms or storms that develop into hurricanes) each year, according to the National Hurricane Center at the National Weather Service.

But individual destinations often avoid the worst of them because they lie outside the direct paths of most storms.

On average:

June has one tropical storm develop every other year.

July has two tropical storms; one becomes a hurricane every other year.

August has three tropical storms and two become hurricanes.
In September, four tropical storms develop and two become hurricanes.

October sees two tropical storms, one of which becomes a hurricane.

November has less than one storm every other year.

Despite the hurricane history, vacationers who spend a week or more at a Caribbean destination face a low risk of a storm or hurricane crossing over their location.

BEST MONTHS TO GO

Vacationers find that the Caribbean weather months with the most sunshine, lowest rainfall and fewest chances of a tropical storm are spring to early summer.

The riskiest months to go are September and October, with November being a close third because of the potential for storms and hurricanes.
