Best Things to Do in Barcelona | Top 10 List (2019)

The Very Best Things to Do in Barcelona | Our Top 10 List

What are the best things to do in beautiful Barcelona? Here is my TOP 10 list of must-see things in the Catalan capital, whether you're visiting on a cruise or otherwise.

#10: Montjuic Castle
You can see Monjuic Castle from the cruise port, as it sits on top of Montjuic hill.
You can book a guided tour of the castle or just walk around the outside and enjoy the gardens.
I actually walked up the stairs of the mountain to the castle, but I recommend taking the Monjuic cable car and take in some views of the city along the way.

#9: Casa Mila & Casa Batllo
I put these 2 architectural wonders together as they are not far apart geographically and both represent some of the best works of Antoni Gaudi.
Gaudi is highly revered in Barcelona and you will find many of his artistic works throughout the city.
Both are Unesco World Heritage Sites and incorporate the art nouveau style.

#8: Cuitadella Park
This park is the most vibrant and perhaps most important in Barcelona. Originally a military fortification, Park Cuitadella today offers something for everyone. There is the zoo, an incredible expansive fountain (based somewhat on the Trevi fountain in Rome), a museum of natural science, and even the opportunity for boat rentals on the lake. And with so much greenery there is plenty of space for a lovely picnic.

#7: Camp Nou
Even if you’re not into football (or soccer) Camp Nou is a fantastic place to visit. With a seating capacity at almost 100,000, this is the largest football stadium in Europe and is the home stadium of FC Barcelona.
When no games are taking place visitors can tour the stadium, go behind the scenes, walk along the field, and tour the Barca Museum. For football fans this is a must-see.

#6: The Magic Fountain of Montjuic
I absolutely loved seeing the Magic Fountain show. The fountain is situated right below the national art museum and near Placa de Espana. An easy metro stop at Placa de Espana will take you a short walk from the fountain.
Performance times vary by times of year and take place at 8 or 9pm and last about an hour.

#5: La Boqueria
Officially named Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria or La Boqueria for short, this marketplace is one of the city’s original landmarks. First mention of La Boqueria goes back to 1217.
Today the market has a metal enclosure and sells a variety of meats, fruits and vegetables, and other culinary delights. One of the best smoothies I ever had was at La Boqueria.
Easy to find, La Boqueria is right off Las Ramblas and if you’re taking the metro you can stop at Liceu on Green line.

#4: Gothic Quarter
You can spend an entire day just visiting the Gothic Quarter as it involves quite a bit of real estate and tons of history, including Roman ruins. You can still see some of the original Roman walls as part of the Barcelona Cathedral.
Walking the narrow, winding streets through the oldest part of the city you will find fascinating sites like the Barcelona Cathedral, Placa Reial, and shops on every corner.
The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona is right off the east side of Las Ramblas.

#3: Las Ramblas
Speaking of Las Ramblas, this iconic street is almost a right of passage for any 1st time visitor to Barcelona. This is the center most street that cuts through the heart of the city and always provides a bustling atmosphere for shopping, eating, and watching performers entertain the tourists.
Las Ramblas begins at Placa de Catalunya and ends at the Christopher Columbus Memorial about 1.2 Kilometers to the south.

#2: Park Guell
Considered the most colorful place in Barcelona and a masterpiece of Antoni Gaudi, Park Guell is another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The park is full of imaginative design and intriguing spaces, and you can often hear performers playing music. Some of the park is free, but if you want to sit on the serpentine bench and get a picture with the lucky lizard you will have to pay to get in.

#1: Sagrada Familia
Sagrada Familia is an immense, unfinished basilica that dominates the landscape and is a marvel of architecture. It’s also quite controversial. Construction on the church began well over 100 years ago in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar who resigned a year later, and none other then Antoni Gaudi took over the project.
Before his death in 1926 Gaudi once stated that his client was in no hurry.

Barcelona is an amazing place to eat! But here’s the thing - it can also be hard to eat well in Barcelona because it’s so touristy. There are just so many options, and lots of them literally are tourist traps. But happily there are also so many incredible places to eat and delicious things to taste and drink if you just know where to look.

In this video I take you to 10 of my favourite places to eat 10+ incredible bites. And we visit 3 famous neighbourhoods across the entire video. We go to the Born, the Gothic Quarter and La Barceloneta - three neighbourhoods that you have to visit, and we’ll eat delicious food in each!

And a number of places are places we visit on Devour Tour’s food tours - including our Tastes & Traditions of Barcelona Food Tour and our Tapas, Taverns & History Food Tour

Also, once you’ve watched this, be sure to check out my playlist of Barcelona videos - including my epic 9-stop Barcelona Tapas Crawl.

So, where do we go?
1. Granja Dulcinea for an incredible suizo (chocolate and cream!)
2. Mercado Santa Caterina: We visit Bar Joan for a fry-up breakfast and cava and Antonio Iberics for a fantastic selection of cured meats. Plus, we visit a stall for delicious escalivada.
3. Historic Casa Gispert for a selection of wood-roasted almonds, and chocolate treats
4. Hofmann Pastisseria for an insane marscapone croissant
5. La Campana for delicious turrón and horchata
6. Xarcutería La Pineda for vermouth and a selection of potato chips with Espinaler sauce, cheeses and salt-cured anchovies
7. Bodega La Palma for patatas bravas and red wine
8. Can Paixano for a delicious butifarra sandwich and also a pork loin and cheese sandwhich - all knocked back with their famous cava
9. La Cova Fumada for a bomba (it was invented here!), grilled squid and grilled sardines
10. Can Ramonet for a delicious seafood fideuá and drinking from the porrón!

Salut!

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

Things to do in Barcelona 2019? - Awesome activities with Triple.co

Things to do in Barcelona:
Last week we went on a two day trip with Triple to do some unique activities with locals living in Barcelona. These are amazing people doing what they love - and you can join them!

With Triple, you get to experience the best of a city and avoid tourist traps. We started with an authentic tapas tour with the host Atair. We went to several hidden tapas bars, learnt interesting facts about Barcelona and the tapas culture. We also met other travelers and made new friends :)
Check out Atair's activity here:

We started the second day early and went on a freediving activity with Mag K. She is a passionate freediver, running a non-profit freediving association. We went by car to Costa Brava just north of Barcelona. The water was crystal clear and we saw beautiful marine life. If you don't have any freediving gear, you can rent everything from Mag :)
Check out her activity here:

Later in the afternoon we played some soccer with a local Barcelona football team. It was so much fun! The host Rustam and his team mates took good care of us. It was a truly unique experience, playing football in the heart of Barcelona. If you are a football fan or play yourself, this activity is great for you!
Check out Rustam's activity here:

In the evening (the same day) we learned to paint and enjoyed some wine with a local Barcelona painter, Bruce! It was a fun experience, and Bruce did an awesome job explaining how to think and how to create a beautiful painting from scratch. No painting experience is required!
Check out Bruce's activity here:

Triple has over 140 different activities in Barcelona alone! Something for everyone :) Don't know what to do in Barcelona? Check out Triple.co!

I hope you liked this video! Share it with your friends and try a Triple-activity yourself next time you travel!
