The Ultimate Packing Cubes Guide | How To Use & Choose The Best Packing Cubes For Travel

There are hundreds of different packing cubes, and it can get pretty confusing. In this guide, we’ll show you how to use and choose the best packing cubes for travel. View Our Full Written Guide:

0:00 - Intro
0:58 - How To Use Packing Cubes
4:40 - Best Packing Cubes To Choose
8:19 - Considerations Before You Buy

When you open your bag, do you prefer a neatly organized system that’s easy to navigate or a jumbled mess of creased clothing? If you’re the former, great! We’re going to get along just fine, and you’re definitely in the right place.

First and foremost, packing cubes are used to organize the contents of your bag. But they can also help save space, as a cube will compress your clothes together. There are even specific “compression cubes” that take this a step further, which we’ll get into a bit later. The point is, when you’re cramming your life inside a carry-on sized backpack, you’ll want to save space where you can—and packing cubes are one of the best ways to do that.

And if you’re still thinking packing cubes are a waste of time, we should mention that these nifty things make packing and unpacking way easier. Whether you’re an ultra-minimalist, an “I need absolutely everything for any situation” packer, or something in-between—being able to just swap a few bags in and out of your pack is a dream.

At the end of the day, there is no “best packing cube,” but hopefully this guide will help steer you in the right direction to pick up the best packing cube for you. It all comes down to personal preference, travel style, and personal use-case. You may not get it right the first time, and that’s okay! Sometimes you need to iterate.

Grid-It Organizer Review (Cocoon Innovations) | Organize Tech, Cords, and Other Travel Electronics

The ‘Grid-It’ is designed to be the ultimate gadget organizer. The weave of rubberized bands allow for countless configurations of all your tech gear. View Our Full Review:

0:00 - Intro
0:30 - Overview
2:39 - Size & Weight
3:36 - Additional Benefits
4:12 - Durability & Testing
5:24 - Pros & Cons
5:53 - The Verdict

Follow along with Nathan and Rebecca on their YouTube Channel Always A Friday:

When Cocoon Innovations first came up with the ‘Grid-It’ system they must have known they had something pretty special, so special in fact that it’s now featured on nearly every product they produce, from backpacks to laptop sleeves. The organizer, their flagship product and what we’ll be reviewing, is effectively a flat panel featuring a unique weave of rubberized elastic bands, designed to hold and organize your gadgets. In their words it’s “a gadget’s best friend.” But is it?

The Grid-It technology is proprietary patent pending and when you first take a look at it, it’s actually quite simple. It’s designed specifically to store, carry, and protect your gadgets, and that’s exactly what it does, very well in fact.

The rubber on the elastic bands is really what brings this all together. They’re grippy enough to make sure that when you slot something in, it’s not going anywhere. The bands aren’t just rubber though, they’re actually fabric with rubberized dots running through it, meaning it’s nice to touch and you can slide things in and out with ease. The Grid-It works perfectly with items like an external hard drive. Even though smaller items like camera batteries might experience less tension in the bands, it works just as well because of the rubberized texture locking them in. If you can fit the item within the bands, you can pretty much trust it’ll stay in place. That being said though we feel there is a limit. We can just about get away with holding a macbook charger, but we don’t regularly, since it’s fairly heavy and makes it feel a tad lopsided. The frame-sheet of the Grid-It is pretty sturdy, when heavy items are added however there’s a certain amount of flex—you don’t want to push it.

Overall, this is probably an item you didn’t realize you needed until you had one. We all have become so used to gadgets lying around, stuffed in the bottom of bags or in a separate organizer pouch, that we wouldn’t think to go out of the way to actually use a Grid-It. But three years down the line, you’d be lost without it. Once you have all of your important gadgets neatly organized and in one place, it’s likely you’ll never go back.

Adding a dopp kit to your travel gear arsenal will help keep your toiletries in check. No more digging around in your bag to find your toothbrush. But which one should you choose? Are there any clear, quart-sized dopp kits out there or are you doomed to flying with a ziploc bag forever?

We tested all of these kits for their TSA compliance, ability to not get wet when your bathroom turns into a slip n’ slide after a long shower, and functionality. Whether you travel with a magical bar that doubles as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste (looking at you Dr. Bronner’s) or you have a ton of skincare or makeup products, there is a dopp kit for you. All for minimalist & organized travel.

Now, to be clear, the following items aren’t exactly innovative. They probably won’t be durable enough to pass along to your grandchildren either—although we’ve been pleasantly surprised with a few of them.

Do Packing Cubes Really Save Space? | No Cubes vs Packing Cubes vs Compression Cubes Comparison

Do packing cubes really save space? In this video, we do a side-by-side comparison with no packing cubes, packing cubes, and compression cubes, and then compare the results. Read the full article here:

Some people argue that packing cubes are useless and they don't actually save any space. But others use them every time when they're traveling. We decided to test it out for ourselves, so we packed the same amount of clothes in a carry-on without any packing cubes, with packing cubes, and with compression cubes, and then we compared the results and figured out whether packing cubes really do save any space and whether they're worth it.

Turns out, that regular packing cubes save only a tiny amount of space, if any. They're still great though for their organizational features, and they make packing your suitcase quicker and easier.

But if you're really looking to save some space, then you should consider getting compression cubes, because based on our own tests, compression cubes save around 15-30 % of the total space. They're harder to pack, but in the end, it's worth it because of the saved space.

Essential electronic gadgets for traveling

Long distance travel can get pretty boring. These are all the electronic items that I keep in my bag to keep myself entertained.

FULL DISCLOSURE:

This video is not sponsored nor did I receive any money. While I sometimes get bags for free, I have to pay custom fees, shipping fees and all my videos have lots of production costs (e.g. software and musicrights). Therefore I invest my own money into all of these videos and I have no intention to be biased towards a product or company. All opinions in this video are my own unless stated otherwise.

HOW I REVIEW:

As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICKLOOK AND A REVIEW:

A Quicklook usually covers pre-production units or items that I only used for a short period of time. While Reviews cover final items that I have reviewed intensively.

LINKS:

For all my videos I decided not to include links for the products. Everyone is living in different countries and therefore has to deal with different shipping and customs fees. That is why I would advice everyone just to Google the product within their country to find the best deals.
For instance: I live in Germany, It wouldn’t make sense to give you a German link while you might be living in USA or Asia. I hope that is understandable.
