How to Hang a Hammock Tarp / Secrets to the ridgeline

One of the biggest issues with hammock camping is finding a way to stay protected from the elements like rain, snow, sun, and the wind. When it comes to these weather conditions. One of the most important pieces of gear to have is the tarp.
In this updated episode. We are going to look at how to set up your tarp by using a ridgeline. There are basically two types that are used to hang your tarp. I am going to show you how to use them and more.

Tarp / Ridgeline / Beginners to advanced

In the beginning. On my journey throughout the years. To replace the tent with the hammock. I learned very quickly that the challenge when it came to setting up at camp, was not so much hanging a hammock. But hanging a tarp over the hammock. One of the greatest challenges was the ridgeline. Not only how to set it up. But how to attach a tarp to it. Over the years there has been a progression. From the very first day. To where I am now. When it comes to the ridgeline for hanging a tarp.
In this episode. I would like to share with you those three different types of ridgelines that I have used over the years. The progression from the early days to what I have been using now.

Hammock, Tarp, and Camping Tips / Episode #1 / Maximizing the space under your tarp

When you are on an adventure in the great outdoors. When you come to camp. After you found those prefect trees to hang on. And you are ready to set up the hammock and tarp. There is a way to hang the hammock under the tarp that will give you a little more room or space.
In this first episode of Hammock, Tarp, and Hammock Camping Tips. We are going to look at a little trick on how to maximize your square footage under your tarp.

Is a hammock tent worth it? Haven Tent review #campinggear

Pros vs cons of hammock camping ⤵️

I have the Heven tent with the ultralight rainfly. Opinions are my own. Not spon.

PROS
• Lays flat and comes with an extra wide insulated sleeping pad (4 R value)
• Great for side sleepers and I assume anyone with knee or back pain who can’t crawl into a tent
• It's relatively affordable for a sleep system at $315 USD (tent+pad)
• Rain tarp is highly adjustable and can close from inside the hammock if the weather takes a turn
• If there's no trees around you can pitch it on the ground as a Bivy using trekking poles or sticks

CONSiderations
• Can't fit large dogs (sorry Kyro)
• It is 6 lbs 8oz (which is a pound or 2 heavier than my backpacking sleep system setup
• You can keep your bag inside but it was more comfortable outside under the tarp
•Works best with included mattress, the Nemo insulated tensor sleeping pad I have didn’t work because the sides caved in
• Make sure your head side is hung higher than the feet side and your butt is in the middle so your not slanted downwards

Hammock, Tarp, and Camping Tips / Episode #4 / Fixing the tarp

If you are a backpacking trip. You come to camp and go to set up your tarp. You realize that you have no gromet or D-ring to connect to the guy line or ridgeline. Either because it is broken or missing. What do you do?
In this fourth episode of Hammock, Tarp, and Camping Tips. We are going to look at a good little trick that will solve that problem.

Hammock Camping Tarp / Secrets to tie out or stake down a tarp

In the previous episode, we looked at the different ridgelines to hang a tarp between two anchor points or trees. The next thing that you will need to know is how to tie down or stake down a tarp.
Some will say: All that you will need is a piece of cordage, that you attach to the tarp and to a stake. Yes, that is one way of doing it. But what if you want to set up your tarp over your hammock between two trees that will give you this incredible view. Only to find that the ground is either too wet and saturated or sandy or hard because of rocks. Now, what do you do?
In this episode. We are going to talk about how to overcome these situations. And what I believe is the best way to tie down a tarp.

Hammock vs Ground Camping - The Results are Surprising

Subscribe to join the tribe! (monthly gear giveaways.)

There's no doubt Hammock camping is growing in popularity. Especially in recent years. With more and more people ditching traditional ground setups and climbing to higher ground in hammocks, we have to ask ourselves:

Which system is actually superior? Can this be clearly measured? That’s exactly what we’ve set out to discover in this week’s video. We will explore pros, cons, price, weights, and more!

“Hammock vs Ground Camping. The Results are Surprising.”

Pros and Cons to a Hammock Sleep System

Pros
- Superior Comfort (In my opinion.)
- Consistency
- Faster setup & Take-down
- Easier setup & Take-down in bad weather
- No condensation
- Better suited for day napping
- More space because you can pitch your tarp high, low, etc.

Cons
- Need a place to hang
- Less Shelter - Bad weather can be worse
- Need a beanie/face mask

Pros and Cons to a Ground Sleep System

Pros
- Tents are better suited for bad weather
- You can spread out on long Nights (winter months)
- Retain a little more warmth inside a tent body

Cons
- Longer setup / take-down times
- Finding the right spot / getting stakes in can be tricky
- You must avoid rocks and sloped ground
- Tents are harder to keep clean because they're in the dirt
- Condensation can build up within a tent.

As always thanks for watching. Which system do you prefer? Feel like we missed something? Let us know in the comments!
