BAJAN STREET FOOD at Night! FOOD TOUR in Bridgetown, Barbados!

???????? CRAIG:
???????? NERISSA: ????
???? VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG:

As sundown approached on another day in Barbados, by good friends Craig and Nerissa and I decided to go on a nighttime street food tour of Baxter’s Road in the capital city, Bridgetown!

This area is known for doing fish fries, so I couldn’t wait to have some. We saw a woman who makes some of the best fried fish on the road. She was frying up some marlin, which looked super fresh. It really looked amazing. She can also add fries, breadfruit chips, sweet potatoes, and plantain to round out the meal.

????SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER:
???? MY LINKTREE:

We had three different sauces, including pepper sauce and tartar sauce. The tartar sauce was excellent and wasn’t too spicy. The marlin was juicy and tender and lightly fried, and had some delicious spices on it. The bones were even easy to chew through! We also had some fresh coleslaw.

It came to 15 BBD, or roughly $7.50 USD for three pieces of marlin. What a deal! Then, we walked down the street, past another vendor selling kingfish, and headed to Bryan’s Bakery to have some cutters.

Cutters are sandwiches made from large, fluffy buns that look like giant hot dog buns. You can fill them with a number of meats, including liver! My liver cutter was amazing, full of flavor, and a little spicy. I loved it!

Then, we drove to a spot in town where they roast corn on the street on the side of the highway, but they weren’t there. Roadside corn roasters are a dying art in Barbados, unfortunately, as the number of people who do it has dwindled in recent years.

So instead, we headed over to Gap Burger, a local spot that sells burgers, hot dogs, pig tails, fish sandwiches, jerk chicken, spare ribs, and more! Craig told me I had to try a burger and the pig tails, which are a Bajan staple! We got two burgers and the pig tails, which came to 36 BBD/$18 USD.

We set up right on the truck of the car. The Gap Burger was like a small slider. It wasn’t my favorite beef patty, but I liked everything else in it, including the onions, cheese, and coleslaw. I added some of my David’s Been Here sauce to give it a spicy, tropical tang!

Then, we jumped on the pig tail. I was going to have it in Trinidad and Tobago, but they were always out every time I tried to get one. It was very fatty and meaty, and the sauce on it had a nice sweetness to it. It was similar to eating sweet baby back ribs!

Granny’s -
Enjoy authentic Bajan food at Granny’s Restaurant in Oistins Christ Church. Here you will find a variety of Barbadian and Caribbean Cuisine at affordable prices. This is the place to get the very popular cou-cou and flying fish, Macaroni pie and baked pork, Green peas and rice with some curried lamb…. Yummmm. Each day of the week they serve a different selection of food, making it possible to try as many options as you would like and to your liking. Served Fresh and tasty.

To find Granny's, one makes the left turn into the car park just after KFC and Granny’s is at the back, cosily set away from the bustle of the main road, but not far enough to be a deterrent to the average customer. Open Monday to Saturday every week from 10:30 am to 10:00 pm, it remains open even during the hustle and bustle of Oistins on a Friday night. The main reason for this is that no matter what activity is taking place; loyal patrons will seek out the food at Granny's.

Legendary Fish Cakes
A fishcake is a culinary dish consisting of salted fish mixed with flour, fresh herbs and hot peppers then fried until golden. Fishcakes have a crispy outside with a perfectly soft and fluffy inside, balanced by the taste of the saltfish with the perfect amount of spice.
Legendary Fish Cakes is a well known street side stall located at several spots along the south coast. As the name states these fish cakes are legendary on the island and is a must try when in barbados.

Lisa’s Doubles -
Lisa's Doubles is a roadside stall that sells doubles and Rotis on worthing main road south coast of Barbados. Doubles is a popular trinidaian street food a favourite of both locals and tourist.
Doubles is a snack-sized sandwich made of two flatbreads known as bara and filled with a curried chickpeas also called channa, as it's known in Trinidad and India with pickled cucumber and dressed with either tamarind or mango sauce.
One of the most appealing factor besides the taste is the price, with just $3.50 BDS you can enjoy this yummy treat.

Yelluh Meat -
Bajan Cuisine in Black Rock is here at Yelluh Meat, you'll experience delicious Bajan cuisine in a unique way. Their dishes are served in roasted breasdfruit bowls. Breadfruit despite having the name fruit is considered as a starch and is seldom eaten raw. It may be roasted, baked, boiled, fried, or dried and ground into flour. The name Yelluh Meat comes from a type of breadfruit found in Barbados that is said to be sweeter than the white meat breadfruit. At yelluh meat their mouth-watering dishes are carefully prepared with fresh ingredients using traditional techniques.

A Pizza Tho -
A Pizza Tho is the newest gourmet pizza heating up the island’s food scene. The line of personal gourmet pizzas is known for its catchy, weird named pizzas like, The Super Yummy, The Hot Honey and kids’ fave The Easy Cheesy! As well as being known for its appropriately super cheesy names, A Pizza Tho gourmet pizzas are known for their uniquely, delicious flavours such as avocado, bacon and chicken drizzled with their spicy sweet, hot honey sauce.

You can find these pizzas and more at Chattel Kitchen Bar House, a bar, restaurant located on the corner of Beckles Road and Bay Street, opposite the very popular browne’s beach.
We had a chat with the creative mind behind it all.

Barbados Food Tour: Authentic Bajan Food!

I took a Barbados Food Town in Bridgetown and explored the island to find the best Bajan food in traditional Barbados restaurants.

The national dish of Barbados is cou cou and flying fish. I also tried pigs tails, ham cutters, macaroni pie and more! Do not miss the fish cakes. Barbadian food is so tasty. Barbados has a rich history of cuisine that is characterized by strong, spicy combinations of fresh lime juice, thyme, chili peppers and parsley. Bajan hot sauce is so so hot!

Barbadian cuisine, commonly known as Bajan food is a mixture of African, Indian, Irish, Creole and British influences. A typical meal is usually served with one or more sauces.

I partnered with Expedia to meet local Bajans and discover where to eat in Barbados, with locals tips on the best Barbadian food.

Bajan STREET FOOD and Tour of Bridgetown THE CAPITAL of BARBADOS!!

???????????? CRAIG:
???????????? NERISSA:
???? VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG:

With another day dawning bright and early in Bridgetown, Barbados, my friends Craig, Nerissa, and I set out to have a Bajan street food breakfast and tour of the capital city!

We started at some outdoor craft vendors near the bridge that connects the two halves of the city. There was a nice man named Nigel selling lots of handmade sandals, belts, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and hats! They used lots of local materials like coconut and cowrie shells, as well as beads!

????SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER:
???? MY LINKTREE:

I bought three anklets for my two daughters and my niece for 25 BBD/$12.50 USD each, and a coconut bracelet. Past that is a square where they honor the national hero, Errol Walton Barrow, who led the fight for Barbados’ independence and was the first Prime Minister of Barbados.

Nearby is a harbor for boats. It’s beautiful! Across the bridge, we saw the Parliament building, a colonial building that was built between 1870 and 1874. Then, we headed down Broad Street to get some pastries. The buildings were colorful!

We arrived at Crumbz Bakery, which doesn’t have a sign outside. They have several pastries, but we decided to go with three: the beef patty, currant slice, and meat roll, which came to 25.75 BBD, or about $13 USD.

The meat roll was flaky and reminded me of a pastel. I loved the buttery, flaky layers. The beef was really nice and it had some tasty spices in it. It was really unique!

The currant slice was a dense, rolled-up pastry containing lots of currants. It had lots of layers and also contained cinnamon and raisins. It was very filling and tasty! And finally, the beef patty was large and flaky with tons of meat inside. It had a curry-like flavor but also had a sweetness to it.

Adding my David’s Been Here hot sauce added a nice kick of tropical sweetness from the pineapple and guava, and a small amount of heat!

From there, we walked to a street market on Swan Street one street over. There are swans in the mosaic-like designs on the ground. I could see vendors selling clothing, produce, jewelry, sandals, and more.

I tried a Bajan cherry from a vendor. They didn’t have much meat on them, but they were very sweet and tasty!

We walked to the end of the street and turned around and got some snow cones sold by a man named Tyson. They add lots of fruit flavors and condensed milk. It was like a creamy alcoholic snow cone for only 5 BBD/$2.50 USD. The Baileys and nutmeg in it blew me away! It was my favorite snow cone I’ve ever had!

From there, we headed over to Cheapside Market, which is a local farmer’s market! You can buy produce, juices, meat, clothes, and more. Saturdays are the best days to visit, but they’ve mostly closed during the week. There were only a few vegetable vendors open, but the butchers were open!

There were eight or nine butchers open, selling beef, cow heel, lamb neck, pig feet, pig ears, tongue, brain, and more. They have an amazing saw that can cut straight through the bone! It was so cool to see!

Back outside, we met a woman named Sheryl selling bottled sugarcane juice and coconut water, as well as pepper sauces! Her pepper sauces are 10 BBD/$5 USD each. She also makes tamarind balls. Some of them contain fresh cayenne pepper! It was very sticky and had a real spicy kick to it!

The sugarcane juice was very sweet and refreshing! It was exactly what I needed on a hot day. She also sells seasonal juices!

Traditional BAJAN FOOD and RIHANNA DRIVE in Barbados!

???????????? CRAIG:
???? VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG:

After landing in my 91st country, Barbados, my first order of business was trying a traditional Bajan breakfast in Christchurch, which is just south of the capital city, Bridgetown! Come with me as I get my first taste of authentic Bajan cuisine!

Joining me on this trip is my good friend Craig, a local pilot and musician who would be taking me around the entire island!

????SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER:
???? MY LINKTREE:

For our traditional Bajan breakfast, we’d be having saltfish, fish cakes, fried plantains, and corned beef hash at Surfers Café. It’s a really nice restaurant right on the Atlantic Ocean. Reggae bands often play there. The waves were crashing right below us!

They even have a bathroom that has a cut-out window that looks right out at the ocean!

We started with mimosas, which is a mixture of orange juice and prosecco. Then, I also got some coffee before our breakfast arrived!

The bake was really good. It was basically a fluffy, slightly sweet bread ball with cinnamon. I added some saltfish to it, which was really tasty. It contained onion, peppers, and spices, and was really nice.

I loved the sweet fried plantains. The corned beef hash was a little different from the kind I’m used to in the United States, but still contained a nice mix of meat and potatoes. We added a bit of my David’s Been Here hot sauce (which contains pineapple and guava), which added a nice sweetness and a hint of spice!

We dipped the fish cakes in the mayo pepper sauce, but honestly, we liked my hot sauce on it better. This was a real Caribbean breakfast! I loved it. It was a great way to start our day. We finished with a couple more mimosas and my black coffee.

Three breakfasts cost $146 BBD, or about $72 USD. Then, we hopped in the car and drove through Christchurch on the southern part of the island. Barbados is small, at only 160 square miles, so it only takes about an hour or an hour and a half to drive around the whole island.

We stopped at a shop to buy an authentic Barbados soccer jersey. They sell out quickly, so I was lucky to get one. It cost $120 BBD, or about $60 USD. Then we drove on to get some coconuts from a vendor along the highway!

The guys fill up bottles with the coconut water or you can drink straight from the coconut like I did. The water inside was so cool and refreshing. Then, if the coconut has some meat inside, you can eat it, too.

There was no meat inside mine, but I ate some out of Craig’s, which was young and sweet! You can find coconut vendors everywhere on the island, especially on Sundays!

From there, we continued on to Rihanna Drive, which is named after the superstar singer! She grew up in a small house on this street. You can take a picture in front of the house, which has a fence around it and a Rihanna sign and the colors of the Barbados flag on the ground. People live inside, though, so be respectful of the property.

Nearby is the Rihanna Drive Community & Tourist Shop & Eatery, a small shop where you can order rum, beers, and food. We ordered some Deputy Beer and continued on down the street. There’s a sign displaying all of Rihanna’s accolades, and all of her hit song titles are on the ground, from Pon de Replay to Umbrella to Work!

What an awesome start to my time in Barbados!

RUM Soaked BAJAN FOOD in Holetown, Barbados! Everything BETTER with Rum SHOP TOUR!

???????????? CRAIG:
???? VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG:

My first day on the island of Barbados continued in Holetown on the island’s western side, where I’d get my first taste of rum-infused Bajan food! We were also going to stop at some rum shops!

Our first stop was Rum Stop, a restaurant where every dish is infused with rum! It’s located on the second floor of a beautiful building with a terrace and nice views. I could see lots of Mount Gay rum, which is the most famous brand of rum on the island.

????SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER:
???? MY LINKTREE:

They’d be making several different dishes for us, including rum-infused ribs, Bajan macaroni pie, codfish and crackers, Bajan fish cakes, fried pork nuggets, deep-fried breadfruit chips, and flying fish! They serve them with rum-infused vinaigrettes, including a strawberry one, and a balsamic reduction!

They carry roughly 40 different rums across six different brands. They have some rum punch in barrels that they’d charred on the inside. It creates a flavor you can’t get anywhere else!

The fried breadfruit reminded me of a soft tostone. I really liked them! Meanwhile, I watched them cook their special rum-infused barbecue sauce and the ribs. Then, they pour the sauce over the ribs and the macaroni pie before topping it with a vinaigrette and the balsamic reduction.

Next, I tried some rum. It was really good! Then, finally, it was time to eat! On the terrace, we started with the Bajan fish cakes, which reminded me of fishy hush puppies. They were crispy on the outside and a little salty. I loved the tomato-rum mayo they came with!

The fried pork nuggets were crispy and tender, and full of flavor. They came with some nice, juicy roasted peppers. Adding some of my pineapple-guava David’s Been Here hot sauce added a fruity and slightly spicy kick to the breadfruit. I chased it with some rum with ginger. It was really strong!
Next was a fried flying fish with mashed potatoes and the strawberry-rum vinaigrette. It was so good, but adding the David’s Been Here hot sauce blew my mind.

Next was the shredded codfish, which had some peppers, onions, and cucumber mixed in. The mix of brininess, flakiness, and crunchiness was unbelievable. They came with Bajan crackers. Together, they reminded me of a saltfish ceviche!

Finally, we finished with the main event: the rubs and the Bajan macaroni pie. The ribs were tender, and the sauce contained both rum and gravy. I also loved the creaminess of the macaroni pie. There was so much rum in this meal! Eating them together blew my mind!

Then, we drove to Mount Gay Rum, which has been in business since 1703. They make the most famous rum in the world! Inside, we met Adrian, who would be giving us a tasting of their house rums and premium rums.

Their Silver is their youngest rum and is 43% alcohol. It was good but it burned! Their Eclipse is aged 2-7 years and is also 43%. They use it to make their rum punch and was really nice. The Black Barrel is aged 6-8 years as close to a spiced rum as you can get. These are all mixing rums!

The XO is aged 7-15 years and was the smoothest one so far. I wanted to buy a bottle! Next was a mixed drink called Blood, Sweat & Tears, which contained rum, lime, and cranberry juice.

From there, we drove to John Moore Bar, a very popular rustic bar on the ocean. The NBA legend Reggie Miller once visited here. Visitors can write their names on the ceiling.

We started with Foursquare Old Brigand Rum, which was very smooth. You have to drink a glass of water for ever glass of rum, otherwise you’ll get drunk! Then, we took our drinks to the terrace, which looks out over the ocean!

Finally, we hit our final spot, De Famous Bird Bar for our last shot of Foursquare Old Brigand Rum.

Is THIS The Best TRINI FOOD in BARBADOS? Doubles, Bake & Herring, and Aloo Pie!

???????? CRAIG:
???????? NERISSA: ????
???? Airbnb:

On my last day in Barbados, I headed off to an amazing supporter’s home for a traditional Trini breakfast!

Auntie Indra is the reason why I came to Barbados—she invited me, and now she’d be cooking some delicious Trini dishes for me and my friends Craig and Nerissa! She’s also Nerissa’s mom and owns the amazing Airbnb I’d been staying at!

She had already made some baras and smoked herring, and was also starting on the aloo pies and bakes. She had tamarind and mango sauces, as well as pepper sauce. Just watching the cooking process was taking me back to my time in Trinidad!

I met her cat, Ginger, and watched her flatten and fry the baras. Baras are the base ingredient for doubles, which is like a play on an Indian dish called chole bhature. They top it with chickpeas (chana) and sometimes vegetables and even meat. They also add different sauces like tamarind and pepper.

I even tried my hand at making and frying a bara, and then we fried an aloo pie, which is stuffed with potatoes. They’re almost like Trini potato empanadas! Then, she fried up some fry bake, which we’d be eating with some smoked herring.

Next she took the rest of the bara batter, molded it into balls, and fried them. These are called pholourie! They’re like little crispy fritters.

First, she boils and washes the herring, as it’s very salty. Then, she sautees some onions and peppers in a pan and adds the smoked herring, a Bajan pepper, and green sauce.

Then, it was time to eat. We started with the doubles, which had an amazing, crispy dough. They were perfect with the chana, mango sauce, tamarind sauce, cucumber chutney, and pepper sauce! Then, I ate the rest of the filling with some pholourie!

I added some of my David’s Been Here hot sauce, which added a tropical kick with the pineapple and guava! It was fantastic!

Next was the aloo pie, which we added chana, tamarind, mango, cucumber, and pepper sauce to. The flavors and contrast in textures between the chana, cucumber, and pie was also excellent. What an amazing breakfast! My David’s Been Here sauce made it even tastier!

Next was the tomato choka, which is almost like a salsa, and the bake. You open it up and add the herring and choka to make a sandwich. It was smoky and a little salty, and the peppers were hitting me a little bit!

It was my last day in Barbados, so I was going all-out with the food. I couldn’t help but go back in for more pholourie and doubles. The food had me sweating!

If you’re ever in Barbados, stay at Auntie Indra’s Airbnb! It has 1 bedroom, 1 bath, a full kitchen, and more! It’s so close to the beach and is perfect.

Rihanna's Favorite Bajan Fast Food! Chefette in Barbados!

???????? CRAIG:
???????? NERISSA: ????
???? VISIT MY TRAVEL BLOG:

When in Rome, do as the locals do. So with midnight approaching on a Saturday night in Barbados, I headed out to one of the most famous fast food spots on the island, Chefette, which happens to be a favorite of local hero and pop superstar Rihanna!

My friends Craig and Nerissa and I headed out to the original Chefette restaurant, which is sometimes open until 3 in the morning! They have burgers, pizza, roti, sandwiches, chicken nuggets, ice cream, broasted chicken, macaroni pie, and a lot more. And you can only find Chefette in Barbados!

We went inside but they didn’t let us film inside, so we went through the drive-through instead. We went with a snack box, a 9-piece nugget with barbecue sauce, chicken and potato roti, a barbecued chicken sandwich, and a barbecued burger. Our total came to $30 USD. Then, we posted up on the hood of Craig’s car!

The snack box contained two pieces of fried chicken, fries, and a roll. The chicken drumstick was crunchy and juicy without being greasy. The roll was nice and fluffy and would have gone well with the chicken.

Next, I tried the chicken & potato roti, which was still hot and filled with curried chicken and tons of potato. I loved the spices and the chicken in combination with the potatoes. It was very filling but very tasty! I ate my half super fast!

The chicken nuggets with barbecue sauce were crispy and tasty, and the fries with barbecue sauce was really satisfying. I’m not really a fast food guy but I loved it. It was topped with slaw, tomato, lettuce, and onions. It wasn’t my favorite chicken sandwich but I liked the slaw.

I took a bite of Craig’s barbecued quarter pound burger. I loved the pickle and tomatoes. It was so good I had to go in for a second bite! Then, I finished the rest after Craig didn’t.

Overall, I’d say trying Chefette is a must when you’re in Barbados. It’s a local staple and a lot of the food is really tasty!
