Berat,2400 year old museum
This 2,413 years-old city, the pride of Albanian architecture which is under the protection of UNESCO, is located 120 km from Tirana. The city forms a wonderful combination of eastern and western cultures, costumes, traditions and outlook. Berat is a treasure-trove of Albanian history, culture and a testament to the country’s tradition of religious harmony
The city’s life began in the 6th-5th century B.C. as an Illyrian settlement. Later, in the 3rd century B.C., it was turned into a castle city known as Antipatrea. The castle expanded afterwards, particularly during the feudal dominion of the Muzakaj family. Inside the castle, they built churches with valuable frescos and icons, and also a calligraphy school. Uniquely today, residents still live inside of the castle walls. The three major neighborhoods of the old city are Mangalemi, Gorica, and Kala, where the castle itself is located.
In Mangalemi, below the castle, you can see the famous view of the façades of the houses, with windows that seem to stand above each other. In general, a traditional house has two floors, where the second is prominent and has many cambered windows and wood carvings. With its houses built along the steep hill, the view of Mangalemi is the reason that another name for Berat is the City of the Floating Windows.
Across the Osum River lies the Gorica neighborhood, whose houses face those of Mangalemi. The arched bridge of Gorica, built in 1780, is a beautiful architectural monument constructed to link Gorica with Mangelemi.
The ensemble of the Byzantine churches in the castle of Berat is extraordinary. At the foot of the castle, there is the Byzantine Church of Shën Mëhilli, while the 13th century Church of Shën Maria e Vllahernës, the Church of Shën Triadha (The Holy Trinity), and the post-Byzantine monumental Cathedral of Shën Maria are located within the castle.
The Cathedral of Shën Mëria houses a museum of works by the famous iconographers of the 16th century: Onufri, and his son, Nikolla. There are over 100 icons on display and they also include works of other artists such as Joan Çetiri, Onufër Qiprioti, and many anonymous painters. You also can visit the Monastery of Shën Spiridhoni in Gorica.

GJIROKASTRA, The City of Stone
The city of Gjirokastra is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and is one of the most attractive tourist sites of the country. Perched on the eastern side of the Wide Mountain (Mali i Gjërë), the city began as a fourth century castle, which is today the greatest castle in the whole country. Inside the fortress is the Museum of Weapons, where weapons of different periods up until the Second World War are displayed. Gjirokastra is known as “The City of Stone”
The museum city of Gjirokastra was built on the eastern side of “Mali i Gjerë”. Since 2005, it has been in UNESCO World Heritage site.
The origin of the city starts with the castle of Gjirokastra, built in IV century AD. The city was named Argyrokastro, in 1336. In 1417, it was conquered by the Ottoman army. The city reached its peak over 1800-1830, when monumental assembly houses were built. The first neighborhoods are those of Bazaar and Hazmurate.

The main characteristic of Gjirokastra is the intensive use of stone in building the houses, which look like small fortresses, the streets of cobblestone, which all lead to Bazaar. You can also visit the Mosque of Bazaar here, built in 1557. Due to all these features, Gjirokastra is also known as the “The Stone City”.
The most important structure of the city is the castle, which is the biggest castle in Albania. Inside the castle, you can visit the Museum of Weapons, opened in 1971. Weapons from the prehistoric times up to the World War II are exhibited on here. The National Folk Festival has taken place in this castle during the years.
During your stay in Gjirokastra, you can visit the Ethnographic Museum, located in the house where the former communist dictator Enver Hoxha was born. This house (today a museum) is located in the Palorto quarter. You can also visit the house of Zekat family in Palorto, in a dominating position, which has undergone restoration. It is one of the most magnificent and characteristic buildings of Gjirokastra. Built in 1811-1812, it is a magnificent three-floor building and has two twin towers. A special feature of the house is the wooden carved ceilings and the characteristic guest room. From the wooden balcony in the third floor, you can enjoy an impressive view of Gjirokastra.

The town of Gjirokastra is also known for its culinary art; we can mention special dishes like pasha qofte, shapkat, oshaf with dried figs (a dessert with sheep`s milk, sugar and dried figs),etc.

Other sites worth visiting are the Ethnographic Museum, situated inside an 18th century çardak building, and the Edward Lear Gallery of Art, a well-known English painter who painted much of Berat and Albania. In addition Berat is known for its traditional dishes. It is worth tasting specialties such as pula me përshesh and çorba e Tomorrit in the local restaurants.

GJIROKASTER, ALBANIA (2022) | 7 BEST Things To Do In Gjirokaster

Gjirokaster is located on a hillside in the south of Albania, overlooking a stunning river valley. It’s known for its ancient history, Ottoman-style architecture and imposing castle, which is one of the biggest in the Balkans. From the first moment you set foot in its cobbled streets, you’ll be enchanted with this place. And while many people choose to visit Gjirokaster as a quick day trip, we highly recommend staying at least a few days here if you can. This UNESCO World Heritage town has a diverse mix of things to do.

???? WHERE WE STAYED IN GJIROKASTER:
- Villa 70 (highly recommend!)

7 of the BEST Things to do in Gjirokaster:

7. Stroll around the Old Bazaar
The Old Bazaar is the most picturesque area in Gjirokaster and strolling around it is an experience in itself. There are many souvenir shops, traditional cafés, restaurants, and some beautiful Ottoman-era houses. You’ll quickly understand why Gjirokaster is considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Albania. So bring your camera and spend time taking in the atmosphere.

6. Visit the Castle
Dominating the town, the castle is the most-visited tourist attraction in Gjirokaster for a good reason. While it’s still unclear when this fortification was exactly built, there’s no doubt that it witnessed the turbulent history of the region across centuries. Inside the castle you can see the Clock Tower, an Aritallary Gallery, and a US Air Force plane that made an emergency landing in Albania during the Cold War. The Castle’s Museum is also a must-do when inside.

5. Take a look inside Zekate house
After visiting the castle, you should head to Zekate House, a traditional Ottoman-era house that dates back to the early 1800s. It’s a typical tower house, belonging to the wealthy families of 19th century Gjirokaster. Zekate is a 3-storey house and has gorgeous interiors and rooms, which can all be accessed.

✅ Book guided tour:

4. Try the local specialties
Gjirokaster has its own produce and unique culinary traditions. The town’s signature dish includes baked rice balls, and you can find it in almost every restaurant in the city. Restaurants we recommend are: Odaja, Taverna Kuka, and The Barrels.

3. Walk to the Ali Pasha bridge
Another great thing to do in Gjirokaster is to hike to Ali Pasha’s bridge, which is set in a narrow gorge right outside of town. It takes about 45 minutes of uphill walking to reach the aqueduct from the castle. But if you have a rental car, it might be easier to drive the first part, which is a mostly paved road.

2. Learn about the Cold War Tunnels
When traveling around Albania you’ll discover many bunkers that were built during the Cold War. Gjirokaster has its own version of a bunker, which sits underneath the castle. The Cold War Tunnel was a secret 800-meter long tunnel bunker that has been transformed into a small museum.

1. Watch sunset from the Obelisk
Given Gjirokaster’s hilly character, it’s no wonder that there are many beautiful viewpoints to enjoy. Our favorite one was from the Obelisk monument in the heart of the old town. From here, you can oversee the entire town, castle, and valley.

GJIROKASTER, ALBANIA (UNESCO World Heritage)【4K】⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Gjirokastra, Qyteti i Gurtë ???? Vlog Shqip ????????

South ALBANIAN FOOD in BERAT CASTLE!! Exploring UNESCO Houses | Berat, Albania

???? TRAVEL MEDIA EU:
???? RESTORANT ONUFRI:
???????? DAVID’S BEEN HERE ALBANIA SHIRTS:

My incredible seventh day in Albania continued in the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage town of Berat! Join me as I explore an old Ottoman village and lots of other local attractions!

???? BALKAN PEARLS TOUR OPERATOR:
???? RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

My boy Erjan from Travel Media EU and I started our afternoon adventure on Gorica Bridge, which spans the Osum River. Across the bridge is the Ottoman village, which is said to have a thousand windows!

On the left bank of the Osum River is Gorica, where you’ll find lots of historical homes and buildings. Walking along the stone houses was like stepping back in time to the 18th century! It had a gorgeous Ottoman/Mediterranean feel and reminded me of Cannakale, Turkey.

Because Berat is a UNESCO site, when home renovations occur, they must be in the same style as before. Next, I saw an old home with a gate that was falling apart, and the 19th-century Church of Saint Spiridon. This side of the city is less touristy than the other, but it was really beautiful and authentic.

Across the river was the Mangalem area, which lies at the foot of the castle hill. It was really pretty, but I could see more restaurants and hotels there. There, we saw the 16th-century Bachelor’s Mosque, which was under construction. Along the street were restaurants, hotels, and souvenir shops, including the Unique Art shop, which sells beautiful wood carvings of sites around the city. I bought one for €65!

Next, we headed to the Berat National Ethnographic Museum, which is located in a 400-year-old traditional house. It shows the way the house was used, and displays clothing, head pieces, pottery, textiles, and more.

Next, we drove up to Berat Castle in the Kalaja area, which is located on the castle hill. The castle is over 2,400 years old and dates back to Illyrian times.

The castle is unique because it’s a living castle, so people still live there! It’s full of restaurants, souvenir shops, and stone houses. There’s also a small church.

Then, we stopped by Restorant Onufri for lunch on their terrace! We started with rakija and then got several dishes: stuffed cabbage; okra; fërgesë with red peppers, green peppers, tomatoes, and feta cheese; beans; salad with cucumber, tomatoes, onions, and feta; eggplant; moussaka; cannellonis; byrek; and chicken with rice!

The beans were moist yet crunchy and full of thyme. Next was the fresh and juicy eggplant, and the okra, which contained thyme, tomato sauce, and oil! Next was the flaky byrek, which contained a nice, fluffy cheese. The stuffed cabbage was stuffed with rice and tomatoes! Then, I had more strong rakija!

The cannellonis had minced meat, tomatoes, and cheese on top. Next was the moussaka, which contained meat, potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. I loved the crispiness on the bottom! The fërgesë was oily and full of pepper flavor. The chicken and salad were also great, but the eggplant really blew me away!

After lunch, we headed to Muzeu Onufri, which is dedicated to Onufri, a famous 17th-century painter. It used to be an 18th-century church. Outside in the courtyard are beautiful preserved frescoes from 1797, but I couldn’t film inside the museum.

Then, we went to the walls atop the hill, where you get incredible views over Berat, and the watchtower where we got stunning views of the entire area. I could see the city, the river, the old town, the bridges, and the mountains. This was one of my favorite places in Albania so far!

Albania | Gjirokastër, The City of Stone - Castle & Bazaar [In 4K]

Gjirokastër (Gjirokastra) is on UNESCO's world heritage list. It's a very well-maintained town/city of Ottoman heritage.
The castle is from around 1200's and is very central to Gjirokastër and has great panoramic views.
Gjirokastër has nicknames such as the city of a thousand steps and the city of stone.

The city is easily one of the main and most important historical, cultural and tourism centers in all of Albania.

Gjirokastër The City of a Thousand Steps could often be considered a ''brotherly / rival'' city to Berat The City of a Thousand Windows.

The city of Girokastra. Albania. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gjirokastra is a city in the south of Albania, in the valley of the Drina River. The administrative center of the region and district of the same name. The UNESCO-listed southern Albanian city of Gjirokastra is a rare example of a well–preserved city from the time of the Ottoman Empire. The name means silver fortress, in the center there is a huge citadel located on a steep hill above the abundant valley of the Drin River. The fortress has existed here since at least the first century, but the modern medieval castle appeared in the XIII century, after which the city began to grow down and around the hill where the fortress stands.

Berat,Albania:
Berat is a town located in south-central Albania and the capital of both the District of Berat and the larger County of Berat. As of 2009, the town has an estimated population of around 71,000 people. In July 2008, the old town (Mangalem district) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
During the 18th century Berat was one the most important Albanian cities of the Ottoman Empire. In the early modern era the city was the capital of the Pashalik of Berat founded by Ahmet Kurt Pasha. Berat was incorporated in the Pashalik of Yanina after Ibrahim Pasha of Berat was defeated by Ali Pasha in 1809. In 1867, Berat became a sanjak in Yannina (Yanya) vilayet.
During the early period of Ottoman rule, Berat fell into severe decline. By the end of the 16th century it had only 710 houses. However it began to recover by the 17th century and became a major craft centre specializing in wood carving. During the 19th century, Berat played an important part in the Albanian national revival. A Greek school was operating in the city already from 1835.
It became a major base of support for the League of Prizren, the late 19th century Albanian nationalist alliance, while the city was also represented in the formation of southern branch of the league in Gjirokastër. From October 23 to October 30, 1944, the second session of the Council of National Liberation of Albania was held in Berat, where the National Liberation Movement-controlled Anti-Fascist National Liberation Committee became the Provisional Democratic Government of Albania, with Enver Hoxha as its prime minister and minister of defence.Wikipedia
