Ben Lomond Summit in Queenstown New Zealand

Hiking BEN LOMOND in Winter | Queenstown, New Zealand

The Ben Lomond Track rewards trampers with spectacular 360 degree views over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountain ranges. The track is approximately 14km return and is classified as difficult.

The track begins among Douglas fir on Skyline Access Road or the Tiki Trail. At about 800 m altitude you leave the tree line behind to enter alpine tussocks and shrubs. Climb to the 1,326 m Ben Lomond Saddle. Beyond the saddle is Ben Lomond Station where the track becomes a marked route. From here, the terrain becomes steeper and rougher as it approaches Ben Lomond's 1,748m summit. If you would like to shorten the hike, you can take the Skyline Gondola up, down or both; this makes it significantly easier on the legs.

Checkout the below video by NZ Mountain Safety Council, this has all the information you will need:

Hangover Hike Up Queenstown's BEST Day Hike | Ben Lomond, New Zealand

This track has among the HIGHEST number of search and rescue efforts in New Zealand. Not to be taken lightly, especially during the winter months, the Ben Lomond track is a steep gradient hike with rewarding views at the summit at 1,438 m.

Crampons and hiking poles are HIGHLY recommended during the winter months when the track can shift from muddy to snow covered and icy.

BUNGY JUMP, Ben Lomond, etc | QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND- Part One

They say New Zealand backpackers get stuck in Queenstown- it's 100% true. I spent 3 months in Queenstown going on Bungy Jumps, Canyon Swings, hiking spectacular trails such as the Ben Lomond, and taking in the relaxing vibe of the town itself.

From the Onsen Hot Pools, to Beach Street's warm weather and amazing food, Queenstown is a place that quickly became my favorite town in New Zealand, and one of my favorite places in the world.

Ben Lomond Summit in Queenstown New Zealand

We tackle the super famous Ben Lomond Summit track! This 14.2KM trail in Queenstown New Zealand was a fairly tiring day hike, taking around 7 hours for us to finish, but that 360 degree view from the peak was worth every ounce of effort!

Queenstown Day Hike / Ben Lomond summit via Saddle Track, New Zealand

The Ben Lomond saddle & summit is an achievable, one-day hike in Queenstown. First, we took the Tiki Trail, from Brecon Street to Queenstown Skyline Gondola, grabbed coffee & food, and then followed the Ben Lomond signs to the summit top at 1748m.

Watch Chris & I get up close & personal with two cheeky Keas (the NZ parrot) at the summit. I recommend you pack plenty of water, a good windbreaker & your camera. A hike to just the Ben Lomond saddle on a clear day will provide equally stunning views over Lake Wakatipu and those that have the required fitness will reach the summit approx. one hour if they continue. Be sensible & be safe outdoors.

Summiting Ben Lomond in Queenstown, New Zealand

Hike to the summit of the Ben Lomond in Queenstown, New Zealand. While you can take the gondola which cuts like 2 hrs of the hike, I have opted for going the entire route - from the shore of the lake, where my hostel in Queenstown was. Enjoy :)

The Ben Lomond Trail - Journey to the highest peak in Queenstown

Subscribe to my Patreon on for member only updates & posts!

This particular trail in, Queenstown New Zealand, truly holds a special place in my heart, this was my third time doing it and you never get sick of the stunning views that follow you as you snake your way to the top. The route itself takes 4 hours from the SkyLine Gondola, almost completely in the open I would recommend a hat and some sunscreen and also the trail might look daunting at first as you come face to face with the mountain at the start of the trail but just keep walking and enjoy the rewards that await!

Another helpful tip would be to bring plenty of water! It was certainly an interesting lesson to learn!

Queenstown | Hiking Ben Lomond!

Queenstown on New Zealand's South Island is a fantastic place to visit summer or winter, with its beautiful lakefront position, surrounding hills and mountains and great activities for visitors. We spent a few days here and did plenty of tramping, including up Ben Lomond (1748m). We also ate at the famous Fergburger, took a spin on the Shotover Jetboat and soaked in the hot tubs at Onsen Pools.

BEN LOMOND TRACK NEW ZEALAND

The Ben Lomond track is without a doubt the best day hike in Queenstown! Easily accessible from the town’s centre, you can hike all the way to Ben Lomond summit which is 1,748 metres high. With breathtaking views all along the hike and an epic 360 view at the top, we highly recommend Ben Lomond track over Queenstown Hill walk. However, the out and back Ben Lomond track is much heavier with an elevation gain of 1438 meters over 14 kilometres. But, there are several ways to hike Ben Lomond that can wipe 3 kilometres off the trail distance and almost 450 meters off of the elevation. So the question really is how long or short do you want to hike? This video will give you an impression of the track and of course the summit.

In our complete guide on you’ll find all the information you need to know about Ben Lomond track and the different options to do this hike from Queenstown.

QUEENSTOWN HIKING - Ben Lomond Summit 1080p HD

Stunning views! Hike up to 1751m Ben Lomond Summit in Queenstown. Snowy mountain tops, blue lake views and Kea - world's only alpine parrot. We saw all these hiking up to Ben Lomond summit where you can enjoy 360 views.

Ben Lomond, Queenstown, New Zealand. Best route.

The shortest, fastest and easiest route up Ben Lomond which lacks signage. The trail starts at Lomond Crescent.
13 months after shooting this video I returned, and guess what; the trailhead now has a prominent sign (albeit a temporary one) and there are additional orange markers on the trees to indicate the route.

BEST hike in Queenstown: Ben Lomond Track

Get yourself to the top of Ben Lomond when you're in Queenstown! It will take you a full day, but you can also take the first part up the mountain by gondola. The last part of the hike can be challenging, but you will have the best panoramic views from the top. With a bit of luck you will spot world's only alpine parrot. Watch your bags though, it's a cheeky one!

Hike at Ben Lomond Summit

Day Hike Ben Lomond Summit [ Queenstown NZ ]

The Ben Lomond Track is a demanding climb and a full day's hike with a 1,438 m elevation gain. On clear days trampers are rewarded at the summit with spectacular panoramic views.11 km return via the same track. 3-4 hr return to Ben Lomond Saddle, 6-8 hr return to Ben Lomond Summit.

Ben Lomond Track -- Queenstown, New Zealand -- [TREKSNAPS]

Ben Lomond Track (via Tiki Trail) is a demanding days walk starting from the Skyline Gondola in Queenstown up to the summit of Ben Lomond at 1,748 meters above sea level. The walk itself is not too technical other than the last few kilometers near the summit, and special care and equipment (crampons, alpine equip) should be taken during the colder seasons when there may be a lot of ice and snow covering the track. The track is tiring, however, as you gain 1,438 meters in elevation from the start on many steep grades through beautiful forests and bushland. As you can see in the video, the views are incredible.

Probably one of the most amazing sunrise hikes I have done, mainly because of the crazy mountains around Queenstown. New Zealand goes HARD.
