About Rio de Janeiro: Rio de Janeiro, or simply Rio, is the second-most populous city in Brazil and the sixth-most populous in the Americas. Rio de Janeiro is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazils third-most populous state, after São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Part of the city has been designated as a World Heritage Site, named Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea, by UNESCO on 1 July 2012 as a Cultural Landscape. Founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, the city was initially the seat of the Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro, a domain of the Portuguese Empire. Later, in 1763, it became the capital of the State of Brazil, a state of the Portuguese Empire. In 1808, when the Portuguese Royal Court transferred itself from Portugal to Brazil, Rio de Janeiro became the chosen seat of the court of Queen Maria I of Portugal, who subsequently, in 1815, under the leadership of her son, the prince regent, and future King João VI of Portugal, raised Brazil to the dignity of a kingdom, within the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and Algarves. Rio stayed the capital of the pluricontinental Lusitanian monarchy until 1822, when the War of Brazilian Independence began. This is one of the few instances in history... Rio de Janeiro subsequently served as the capital of the independent monarchy, the Empire of Brazil, until 1889, and then the capital of a republican Brazil until 1960 when the capital was transferred to Brasília. Rio de Janeiro Carnival is one of the biggest and most famous festivals in the world. One of the highlights of the carnival are the street parties, known as blocos de rua in Portuguese. These parties are usually organized by groups of friends or neighborhood associations, and they take place throughout the city, attracting thousands of people. During the weeks leading up to Carnival, there are over 500 street parties in Rio de Janeiro, with different themes and music styles. Some of the most popular blocos de rua include Cordão da Bola Preta, which attracts over a million people each year, and Monobloco, which is known for its samba and funk music.

The joy of being in Rio is the ability to walk along beach promenades that stretch for miles.

Copacabana is a stretch of popular beach and our tour guide indicated that Copacabana has the highest density of elderly people in Rio. Leblon was my favourite beach, followed by Ipanema and lastly Copacabana. Definitely a must visit.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Sailed Norwegian Cruise Line

When it comes to the major cruise lines, there's what I consider the big three -- Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian. There are a lot of similarities between those three, but if I'm being honest, NCL stands out as an outlier from the other two.

The cruise line has a lot of things going on that I didn't realize until I sailed multiple times across different ships.

I'm talking about things like how the atmosphere on the ship is different than other rivals... how your day in port isn't a guarantee... and how one of the most popular sales in cruising has some fine print to know.

Before the Party - a documentary from Rio de Janeiro

The documentary Before The Party is a critical comment on the preparations for the FIFA World Cup (2014) and Olympic Summer Games (2016) in Rio de Janeiro. 22% of the population lives in squatted and self-built neighbourhoods, the so-called favelas. How do the preparations for the mega sporting events shape the life in the favelas and the relations between poor and rich people? The film takes us to several favelas, such as Complexo do Alemao, Morro da Providência and Vila Autódromo.

Director: Einar Braathen. Photographer: Anne Kjersti Bjørn. Editor: Helga Fjordholm.

Einar Braathen is senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR). The documentary was made in connection with Braathen's current research in Brazil funded by the EU 7th Framework Programme and the Research Council of Norway.

The bustling city of Rio de Janeiro has been one of Brazil’s most popular and frequented tourist destinations for decades. Its vibrant city centre is bursting with culture and pulsating with a deep sense of history and heritage. Rio, as it is commonly known, is the second largest city in Brazil and the third largest metropolis in the whole of South America.

It is the most visited city in the Southern Hemisphere, which is no mean feat. This makes for an impressive, memorable attraction for visitors from all over the world.

Rio de Janeiro is hot for most of the year, and rain is frequent during the period between December and March. The coastal areas are cooler than those situated inland due to the cool breeze blowing off the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The average annual temperature is between 21 and 27 degrees Celsius. The landscape and vegetation in and around this metropolis are magnificent, providing a visual feast that has inspired authors and screenwriters the world over.

Because of its many cultural and historical attractions, Rio has implemented fabulous infrastructure to cater to the needs of its visitors. This includes world-class accommodation and plenty of tours. Rio de Janeiro was one of the Host Cities™ for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, welcoming millions of people as they make their way to this international sporting event. In addition, it did host the 2016 Summer Olympics™, inviting sportsmen and –women, as well as their millions of fans, to focus their attention on this bustling destination. Major efforts have been made to minimise social inequality and modernise the economy of Rio de Janeiro to further improve its global standing. This makes for a very special destination.

During your time in Rio, you are urged to see the following fabulous attractions:

• The incredible surfing waves off Prainha. Whether you conquer them yourself or just watch the water-bound athletes skimming effortlessly over and under them, these waves are impressive.
• Tijuca’s lush, dense rainforests, which boast a number of hiking trails for those wanting to experience the fauna and flora first hand.
• Laze on the shores of Ipanema Beach or one of the many other beaches for which this city is renowned.
• Marvel at the sheer scale of the statue of Christ the Redeemer as it overlooks the city far below.
• Take the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain for spectacular views.

• Stroll down the famous Avenue Nossa Senhora de Copacabana.
