Chengdu is the capital of southwestern China's Sichuan province. Chengdu's history dates back to at least the 4th century B.C., when it served as capital for the Shu Kingdom. The city is also home to the famous Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a conservation center where visitors can view endangered giant pandas in a natural habitat. ― Google

HOW TO: Zhangjiajie in 72 Hours | The Travel Intern

Last week, we promised y’all that we’d give y’all a detailed breakdown of how to scale Zhangjiajie, so here it is! First of all, it’s impossible to spend only one or two days in ZJJ. So PLEASE keep that in mind — At least three days (72 hours like in this video) or more.

Chloe’s gonna share some of the tips and tricks the team gathered to handling ZJJ like a frickin’ pro.

1. Explore two parts of ZJJ — Zhangjiajie City, Wulingyuan District (belonging to Zhangjiajie National Park).
2. Be mentally and physically prepared for massive crowds and A LOT of walking.
3. Show off your greatest poses and get creative for photos!!!! (Safety is sexy though, remember.)
4. Bring your student IDs to get discounts! Some even up to 50%.
5. Get ready to spend hours walking through different sites, and note that some places (like Tianzishan) are pretty much a one-way route, so there’s no reversing once you’ve entered the place.
6. Have a great, great time.

01:32 - Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge
This is where Tip #2 comes into FULL PLAY.*IMPT: Do note that you are not allowed to bring things like selfie sticks, cameras (except mobile phones), water bottles, big bags, tripods, basically clunky stuff onto the glass bridge. And no drones are allowed to be flown around the area!

02:07 - Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon
You have to walk through this Grand Canyon right after you get down from the glass bridge.

03:28 - Bailong Elevator
*IMPT: In order to leave the mountainous regions of ZJJ National Park, you’ve got to take the Bailong Elevator, especially if you want to head to Baofeng Lake to end off the day and vice versa.

04:10 - Baofeng Lake

04:48 - Tianzi Mountain
We’re now in Zhangjiajie City! Not in the National Park anymore.
*Route 1 vs Route 2 — This is important, it’s either you wanna walk up 999 (Renald claims it’s less than 999 steps) steps or you wanna walk down the 999 steps.

If you haven’t already checked it out, here’s our full itinerary:

We hope you get to experience the BESTEST of ZJJ, just like how we did! :’-)

China's Landscapes & National Parks - Nature Travel Documentary

China is one of the largest countries in the world, with some of the most diverse landscapes, national parks, and natural scenery. From empty, arid desert landscapes to tranquil forests and beautiful lakes, and from spectacular mountain ranges to powerful rivers.

In this travel documentary, I take you on a journey through some of China’s most captivating landscapes and scenic regions. From the bizarre rock formations of Huangshan and Zhangjiajie national parks to the blue turquoise waters of Jiuzhaigou. From the picturesque mountains and hills around Yangshuo to the impressive Hukou waterfall. From the frozen lakes and mountain peaks of Tibet to the beautiful ‘Rainbow Mountains’ of Zhangye Danxia. From the Yuanyang rice terraces to the mysterious Earth and Stone Forests in Yunnan province. And from the mighty Yangtze River traversing China to the empty deserts of Gansu.

I traveled through China independently for more than a decade, on several occasions. The footage in this video was shot between 2010 and 2019, and is accompanied by relaxing music and background information.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this tour in Zhangjiajie, one of China’s most recognizable and iconic national parks. It’s highly popular for its surreal pillar like rock formations, and was the inspiration for many Chinese painters and artists, and later also the directors of the movie Avatar. Getting around the park is part of the experience, with elevators, glass bridges, and walkways cutting right through the mountains.

Jiuzhaigou is known for its blue turquoise lakes and waterfalls, and is immensely popular with tourists well. The contrast with the next destination, Dunhuang, could not be bigger. This arid desert boasts tall sand dunes, and has seen many traders and explorers travel through its inhospitable landscape over the centuries.

We travel onwards to Yangshuo, a small town located in an otherworldly panorama of limestone hills and mountains. Cycling or paddling past these imposing peaks is a once in a lifetime experience. The next destination is the Yangtze river, which traverses China for 6,300 kilometers. Along the way, it meets breathtaking mountain scenery, hundreds of tributaries, and some of China’s largest cities. Here, we also briefly look at the environmental impact on the river, caused by dams, water diversion, and pollution.

From the raging waters in the narrow Tiger Leaping Gorge, we arrive at the beautiful Yuanyang rice terraces. This rural landscape gives a good insight into village life and agriculture, and provides stunning vistas. From here, we reach the peculiar Shilin Stone Forest.

We continue our journey in Western China, to visit the high altitude Karakul lake. After spending the night in a traditional Central Asian yurt, we travel to Tibet, a highly spiritual region that captures the imagination of many travelers. It’s filled with captivating nature, including mountains, rivers, lakes, and glaciers.

After briefly showing the Hukou waterfall, we climb the stark mountains of Yulong, after which we arrive in the surreal Earth forest of Yuanmou, and the Zhangye Rainbow Mountains. Finally, we finish our travels in Huangshan, the Yellow Mountain, one of China’s most popular national parks.

Jiuzhaigou is located in Sichuan's Aba Prefecture. The place got its name because nine villages are located in this valley. Like a world from the fairy tales, Jiuzhaigou is renowned for its water landscapes. There is a saying that after visiting Jiuzhaigou, you will not see any better water landscapes elsewhere. Tibetan and Qiang folk customs are another tourism highlight of Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area. The two major ethnic minorities of Tibetan and Qiang have lived in Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area for thousands of years. Tourists can experience the different customs of ethnic minorities here.

China, the gateway to East Asia, is a fascinating country. It is an ancient civilization that gave the world Peking Man, gunpowder and noodles. Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors to the Middle Kingdom will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in China:

China's Zhangjiajie national park is home to perhaps the most unique landscape you'll ever see. The Zhangjiajie national forest park holds over 3,000 quartzite rock towers that form an incredible forest in the sky, complete with foggy peaks and lush greenery. These pinnacles, some of which are over 1 kilometer (!) high, were the inspiration for the floating mountains in the Avatar movie. Let's go get some vertigo, shall we? ;)

We cannot recommend visiting the Avatar mountains China highly enough if you are (thinking of) planning in the region! 张家界

Is JIUZHAIGOU the MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN CHINA? | China Travel Video

Visiting the Jiuzhaigou National Park was one of the Top 3 places in China I was most excited to see.
I was so excited for it that I didn't even care if I joined an all-Chinese tour where no one spoke English(which is what I did).
The mountains, waterfalls, forests, and lakes throughout the park were some of the best I saw during my time in China.

Unfortunately 3 months later a 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake hit that region and destroyed many areas of the park.
It has been under reconstruction ever since, but certain parts might not ever look the same.

I also visited the Huanglong Scenic Area(AKA: Yellow Dragon) to see the turquoise calcite pools.
The weather was rainy, foggy, and cold.
So it wasn't the best conditions, but it's still a great area to check out.

This 3-day trip did not let me down at all.
It's still one of my favorite memories of China.

*Most of this footage was spontaneously shot with an iPhone 5, sorry.*
The better looking footage was shot with a Nikon D600.
Any GoPro Footage was shot with a Hero3.
