KOTOR, MONTENEGRO (2023) | 10 Best Things To Do In & Around Kotor

Kotor is a medieval town located in a secluded corner of the stunning Bay of Kotor. In this video, we’ll show you 10 of the best things to do in and around this magical town.

???? Rent a car in Montenegro:
???? Recommended stay - Casa del Sole Lux (the host is lovely!!):

10. Explore the old town
Wander the maze of narrow streets and simply enjoy the architecture. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, this old town has a lot of character. From its decorated gates, to its orthodox and catholic churches, cozy squares, and Venetian palaces, every corner holds a story.

☑️ Kotor private walking tour with food & wine tasting:

9. Walk the city walls
Covering about 4.5 kilometers or 3 miles, the thick walls were built to protect the town, which was an important naval and trading center. Today, the walls are crumbling in some sections and it isn’t possible to walk all the way around the Old Town. But there are still several parts that you can easily access, such as the Gurdić Bastion and the Kampana Tower.

8. Visit a museum
The old town of Kotor is home to a few interesting museums, such as the Cats Museum and the Maritime Museum.

7. Watch the sunset from the fortress
Above Kotor’s city walls, you can find old St. John’s fortress. You’ll have to walk 1,350 steps to get there. The best time to visit is in the early morning or an hour or two before sunset as it’s generally a bit cooler and the light is best for pictures. Find the trail entrance behind the Church of St. Mary Collegiate.

6. Cool down at Kotor beach
Kotor doesn’t have any long beaches, but small ones are scattered around the bay. The closest one is Kotor Beach, which can be found right outside the old town. Alternatively, head to Orahovac or Bajova Kula beach on the way to Perast.

5. Try Montenegrin wine
Kotor’s old town is filled with a variety of charming restaurants and bars where you can sample the local cuisine and wine. Some bars offer wine tastings where you can try indigenous Vranac wine, such as the Old Winery Wine Bar.

4. Explore nearby Perast
The Bay of Kotor is dotted with picturesque villages, but nearby Perast might be the most charming one.

3. Go on a boat tour in the bay
During a 3-hour tour you visit the church on the man-made island of Our Lady of the Rocks, pass through a cave where submarines used to be hidden, spot the old prison on Mamula Island, and swim in the magical Blue Cave.

☑️ Boat tour of the Bay + Blue Cave from Kotor:

2. Hike the Ladder of Kotor
The Ladder of Kotor is an old caravan trail that used to connect Kotor with the old capital of Montenegro. The switchback trail offers some breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor.

1. Drive the serpentine road to Lovćen National Park
From Kotor, it’s a short 45 minute drive to Mt Lovćen National Park via a narrow serpentine road that takes you up to the mountains. Driving this road is a thrilling experience and you can stop at one of the many viewpoints.

Get out of Dubrovnik for the day and head south to the diminutive country of Montenegro on this guided tour. Get acquainted with Montenegro’s must-see sights, stopping first in the small town of Perast for a brief tour and to take a ferry to gawk at a Baroque-era church plopped improbably in the middle of the Bay of Kotor. The Best of Montenegro: Kotor

This is how I fell in love with Kotor, Montenegro — on a summer voyage cruising the Adriatic Sea. What’s the difference between a voyage and a trip? It’s subtle. A trip is practical, as in a quick trip to the grocery store. A voyage has the allure of discovery via land, sea, and air.

The walled city of Kotor originated in Medieval times and was built from the 12th Century through the 14th.
It was love at first sight. Kotor sits high on limestone cliffs commanding wide open views of the azure Adriatic at every turn. The walled city of Kotor originated in Medieval times and was built from the 12th Century through the 14th. Today it holds the distinction of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I love the twisting narrow streets, Roman-style influenced churches, and the town squares.

Climbing Kotor’s City Walls
The moment we entered the Bay of Kotor, I was ready for exploring. This is notable because it can be difficult for me to leave the lap of a ship’s luxury. More of a hiker than a looker, I opted to climb the 1,350 stairs to reach Castle of San Giovanni, also known as Castle of St. John, where the promise of an unbelievable view of the Bay of Kotor and the red-roofed skyline awaited.

Unbelievable view of the Bay of Kotor.
Kotor’s Summer Heat Had Me Beat
Take it from me — Montenegro is HOT in August. There was no way I could have climbed all 1,350 stairs. I made it about one-third of the way there and acknowledged defeat, not an easy thing for a competitive soul such as myself. Yes, I had plenty of water. Good walking shoes, check. Proper clothing, of course. It was the heat! I want you to make it to the top. And to tell us about it. Send a picture. Caveat emptor: Bring lots of water. The higher you climb the stairs, the more expensive the H20 price tag becomes.

Insider Tips for the Best of Kotor
The stairs to Castle of San Giovanni are accessible from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The admission is €3, though you can enter for free before or after the 8 o’clock opening and closing. Plan on two hours of hiking from Kotor’s North Gate to the castle and back.

Climbing Kotor’s City Walls
Not much of a hiker? You will be delighted with Kotor’s Old Town. Situated across the street from the city’s cruise ship dock, Old Town offers so much to see within its walls. Not only is there the never-ending view, there are churches, Venetian architecture, cafes, and shops. Old Town is car free, too. Perfect for meandering.

Understandably so, Kotor is a popular destination for cruise ships. You will have a more intimate visit if you visit when the ships are at sea.

Another Adriatic Wonder
Want a deeper dive into the beauty of the Adriatic Sea and surrounding region? Here’s a snapshot of Croatia, another destination waiting for my return trip. Travel between bordering Montenegro and Croatia is easy. You can fly, take a bus, ride a ferry, or rent a car. Or walk for that matter. If renting a car, watch the details. Some agencies don’t allow leaving the country while others do, and prices vary greatly. I was surprised at the cost to drive in Croatia for a one-way rental. It was worth it, but I advise researching before booking. Sometimes, though, the spontaneity and adventure of travel doesn’t allow for that.

What is on your must-return-trip list? Tell us why?

Montenegro Day trip from Dubrovnik (KOTOR, BUDVA, SVETI STEFAN, PERAST) [globalcitizzen]

Montenegro (KOTOR, BUDVA, SVETI STEFAN, PERAST) - a slice of Adriatic heaven, bursting at the seams with majestic mountains, breathtaking beaches and larger-than-life locals, minuscule Montenegro proves once and for all that good things do indeed come in small packages.

Head south to diminutive coastal Montenegro on this day trip from Dubrovnik. Take a scenic drive on the southern Dalmatian Coast and experience small Adriatic villages and towns, including the UNESCO-listed Kotor, situated in Europe’s southernmost fjord. Admire Sveti Stefan, a medieval island turned luxury hotel, and spend some time in Budva, a walled medieval town on the sea, like a mini Dubrovnik. Finish with a ferry ride back to Dubrovnik. Get picked up at your hotel in Dubrovnik and then hop inside the air-conditioned vehicle to make the drive south to Montenegro. Drink in the views of the Adriatic Sea and the Dubrovnik Riviera and learn about the history and culture of the area from your local guide. After crossing the border to Montenegro, twist and turn with the road, going around the large Bay of Kotor, and passing through charming villages along the way. Then stop in Perast, a lovely town at the base of St Elijah Hill. Consider taking the optional boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks island to check out the baroque-era church (at own expense). The next stop is Kotor, situated in a fjord and one of the most eye-pleasing Montenegrin towns. Once there, begin a walking tour that goes throughout the squares and narrow cobbled streets, taking you to historic churches such as the Cathedral of St Tryphon. Then take some free time to do some wandering — consider marching up the 1,350 steep steps to the San Giovanni Castle for an incredible view and photo opportunity — or sit down for a drink or a snack (at own expense). After Kotor, drive down the coast further until you reach Sveti Stefan (St Stephen). Once a medieval fishing village with a small inlet connecting it to the mainland, Sveti Stefani is now a luxury hotel. After gawking at the island-turned-resort, head to Budva, a 15-minute drive north of Sveti Stefan. This gorgeous walled city on the sea boasts attractive beaches and narrow cobbled streets. Take some free time to explore or sit down for a meal (at own expense). Take a ferry ride across the Bay of Kotor and then enjoy a final scenic drive along the coastal roads of Montenegro to end your day. You’ll be returned to your Dubrovnik hotel.

Montenegro is a Balkan country with rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along its Adriatic coastline. The Bay of Kotor, resembling a fjord, is dotted with coastal churches and fortified towns such as Kotor and Herceg Novi.

Fringed by the Adriatic on one side and rugged mountains on the other, Montenegro (the name means Black Mountain) makes an ideal introduction to Eastern Europe. It's peaceful and safe and is a great destination for solo travellers. Our first timer's guide to Montenegro will help you get your bearings for a trip to this small yet beautiful place.

What to expect in Montenegro
From stunning scenery and beautiful beaches to thrilling activities and sumptuous food, this bite-sized Balkan country which sits between Europe and Asia offers something for every taste. The beach-studded coastline of this country, which was once a member the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, is dotted with small fishing villages, ancient churches, and fortified towns, but the uncontested star of Montenegro’s striking seascape is its UNESCO-recognised Bay of Kotor.

Head inland along winding mountain roads and you’ll find remoter destinations such as the dense bear- and wolf- thronged forests of the Durmitor National Park, Biogradska Gora’s primeval forest or the Tara Canyon, Europe's Grand Canyon and a popular base for white-water rafting.

Despite adopting the Euro in 2002, Montenegro is still budget-friendly with plenty of great value accommodation options ranging from sobe, the clean simple rooms rented by private house owners, to luxury resorts where rooms, especially outside of the summer season, are surprisingly affordable.
