Baucau - former capital or Portuguese Timor (Vila Salazar) and second largest town in East Timor

I've combined a few videos made through several years in Timor from 2016 to 2020. Baucau has always occupied a special place in my heart and I never missed an opportunity to stop by on the way to the Eastern villages like Lospalos, Viqueque, Baguia and, of course, Jaco Island.
Keep your expectations curbed and you won't be disappointed. Baucau does not have as much entertainment at night as Dili and is pretty quiet unless it's a holiday. But that's its main charm - a quiet weekend getaway place just within 2-3 hours drive with spectacular beaches and mountainous vistas just within 30 min drive from Baucau. That's why many people use it as a transit base to go further towards the mountains of Ossu, waterfalls of Venilale, caves of Viqueque or pristine blue waters of Jaco.
Stopping in pousada for a late lunch and a swim in piscina is a must do for a tired traveller coming back to Dili after a visit to the districts.

Baucau - East Timor #EastTimor #Baucau

Baucau is the second-largest city in East Timor, after Dili, the capital, which lies 122 km east of Dili.

Baucau has about 16,000 inhabitants, and is the capital of Baucau, located in the eastern part of the country. In the times of Portuguese Timor, Baucau was little more than an overgrown village,[1] and for part of those times was called Vila Salazar, after the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar.

1973-04 Adventure trip: From Portuguese Timor to Jakarta

This is an extract from my overland trip from Sydney, Australia to Germany in 1973. It covers the section from Baucau (in what was then Portuguese Timor) to the outskirts of Jakarta, Indonesia.
Timeline:
00:00 Bus ride from Baucau to Dili after heavy monsoon rains
02:11 From Dili to the enclave of Occussi by WW II Landing craft
03:15 200 km bus ride Kefa to Kupang (Indonesian Timor)
04:40 The trip continues to Bali
07:03 Travelling to and in Java, Indonesia - 08:51

Note:
In the copying process from Super 8 film to Video some of the original quality was unfortunately lost.

IN A HEART OF TIMOR-LESTE: Aileu, Maubisse and local life on a day trip from Dili

I left Dili at 8:00 AM and headed south to the highlands. Dare Memorial, a museum about Timor-Leste during WWII was closed and I proceeded to the city of Aileu, the center of pro-independece party Fretilin during Indonesian occupation, where Portuguese fort and library can still be found and explored.
After lunch at Projeto Montanha Restaurant, next stop was Maubisse town in Ainaro Municipality with Portuguese hotel (Pousada de Maubisse) on the hill, overlooking the town.
On a way back I found traditional Timorese houses in the rural areas of Timor-Leste.

Cycling around the capital Dili, Timor Leste after flooding throughout Timor Leste

In April 2021 I filmed this footage while the lockdown was temporarily lifted due to the floods, which allowed people to move around to support and recover. As as Friday 30th April 2021, the capital Dili moved back into lockdown.
