VICKSBURG: Poor City In The Poorest State (Mississippi) Has Amazing, Rich History

We traveled to Vicksburg, Mississippi, a small city with a big history. It’s known as the site of one of the most important Civil War battles, which was a turning point towards it's end. The Siege of Vicksburg is commemorated at the vast Vicksburg National Military Park, which includes the Vicksburg National Cemetery and the remains of the USS Cairo gunboat. The landmark Old Court House has a museum displaying Civil War artifacts. Coca Cola was bottled here for the first time, as well as the first time new shoes were sold in a box.

Vicksburg National Military Park ~ Official Trailer

This fully-narrated DVD tours Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi and gives a full account of the vast 1863 military and naval campaign that culminated in the siege of Vicksburg and defeat of the Confederate Army.

It was on this date - July 4th, 1863 - that the outcome of the Civil War was sealed. Ironically, Vicksburg - deep in the heart of the Confederacy and the key to control of the Mississippi River, fell to General Grant's army on the same day that General Lee's army was defeated at Gettysburg, ending the Confederate invasion into the heart of the Union in Pennsylvania.

The film features a moving music score by Civil War musician Bobby Horton with authentic battlefield illustrations and life-like paintings from Civil War artist Mort Kunstler.

Vicksburg Mississippi is not what they say it is

Vicksburg Mississippi is not what they say it is. Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the US. I always hear that some of the towns in Mississippi are really run down. I fell in love with this one. It's just a quaint beautiful town with charm and history.

Vicksburg, Mississippi is a historic city located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The city was founded in 1811 by Newitt Vick, a Methodist minister and entrepreneur, and was named after him. In its early years, Vicksburg was primarily a trading post for farmers and merchants in the region.

During the Civil War, Vicksburg played a significant role in the Confederate war effort. The city was strategically located on a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, which made it an important defensive position. Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant launched a campaign to capture Vicksburg in 1863, and after a lengthy siege, the city surrendered on July 4, 1863. The capture of Vicksburg was a major turning point in the war, as it gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two.

After the war, Vicksburg underwent a period of reconstruction and development. The city became a major center for cotton trading and other agricultural industries, and its population grew rapidly. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Vicksburg experienced a boom in river transportation and trade, as well as the construction of railroads and highways.

Despite its growth and prosperity, Vicksburg also experienced racial tensions and violence throughout the 20th century. The city was a center of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, and was the site of several significant protests and demonstrations. Today, Vicksburg is a thriving city with a rich history and culture. It is home to numerous historic sites and museums, including the Vicksburg National Military Park, which commemorates the Civil War siege and battle.

VICKSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK | CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELD | VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI

Day 27 of our Florida to Montana road trip we spent the afternoon in Vicksburg National Military Park. This is a Civil War Battlefield. The Battle at Vicksburg lasted a total of 47 days. May 18 - July 4, 1863. Total deaths are around 3,000 total from both sides. There were over 10,000 wounded and over 5,000 missing. It's a somber time in our nation's past. Just being there, it was hard to imagine a fight going on, on those beautiful green earth worked mounds...

The Siege Which Tore the Confederates in Half | Vicksburg, MS

The most pivotal event in our country's history, the Civil War, originally stemmed from a long period of tension between northern and southern states throughout the early to mid-19th century, ultimately escalating into a separatist movement and the full-scale warfare with which Americans are familiar. For a number of years, the Confederate rebels held the upper hand, but the Union wasn't yet ready to give up. Many know about the Battle of Gettysburg, typically perceived as the infamous turning point of this bloody conflict. But nearly simultaneously, far and away along the bluffs of the Mississippi River, a crucially strategic siege had been underway for weeks, soon to end, surrounding the city of Vicksburg. The victory by Union forces at this location proved to be incredibly consequential for the Confederacy's subsequent track towards overall defeat. In this regard, this little Mississippi city backs up the argument that Vicksburg was indeed one of the most critical battlefields on American soil. Today we're given the chance to trace the grounds of the Vicksburg National Military Park, where nearly 160 years ago tactical offenses brought an end to almost 20,000 lives over the course of 47 days. Alongside that, we're offered some unusual historical findings within the city which, in contrast to Vicksburg's well-known past, now holds an aura of peace and quiet. As we finish off our adventures in the Magnolia State, let us grasp the rightful respect of today's destination for its place in American history; where the mighty Mississippi's control was shifted back, and where the Confederacy was split in two.

Vicksburg National Military Park preserves the site of the American Civil War Battle of Vicksburg, waged from March 29 to July 4, 1863. The park, located in Vicksburg, Mississippi (flanking the Mississippi River), also commemorates the greater Vicksburg Campaign which led up to the battle. Reconstructed forts and trenches evoke memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city. Victory here and at Port Hudson, farther south in Louisiana, gave the Union control of the Mississippi River.

The park includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles (32 km) of historic trenches and earthworks, a 16-mile (26 km) tour road, a 12.5-mile (20.1 km) walking trail, two antebellum homes, 144 emplaced cannons, the restored gunboat USS Cairo (sunk on December 12, 1862, on the Yazoo River), and the Grant's Canal site, where the Union Army attempted to build a canal to let their ships bypass Confederate artillery fire.

The Cairo, also known as the Hardluck Ironclad, was the first U.S. ship in history to be sunk by a torpedo/mine. It was recovered from the Yazoo in 1964.

The Illinois State Memorial has 47 steps, one for every day Vicksburg was besieged.
Grant's Canal
The remnants of Grant's Canal, a detached section of the military park, are located across from Vicksburg near Delta, Louisiana. Union Army Major General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the project, started on June 27, 1862, as part of his Vicksburg Campaign, with two goals in mind. The first was to alter the course of the Mississippi River in order to bypass the Confederate guns at Vicksburg. For various technical reasons the project failed to meet this goal. The river did change course by itself on April 26, 1876. The project met its second goal, keeping troops occupied during the laborious maneuvering required to begin the Battle of Vicksburg.
The national military park was established on February 21, 1899, to commemorate the siege and defense of Vicksburg. The park sprawls over 1,800 acres (7.3 km2) of land. The park and cemetery were transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service (NPS) on August 10, 1933. Of the park's 1,736.47 acres (not including the cemetery), 1,729.63 acres (6.9996 km2) are federally owned.

Civil War Victory at Battle of Vicksburg Wasn't Ironclad

Ria Nicholas and explore the story of one of America's original Civil War ironclad gunboats as it takes part in the Vicksburg Campaign during the Civil War. Were they awestruck as they boarded her? The Vicksburg Siege: Turning Point in the Civil War #civilwar #confederates

The Siege of Vicksburg was a significant event during the American Civil War. It took place from May 18 to July 4, 1863, and was the final major military action in the Vicksburg campaign of the war. Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee besieged the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi, after two unsuccessful assaults. The Confederate Army, led by Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton, surrendered after more than 40 days of siege, with their supplies nearly depleted. The surrender of Vicksburg was a turning point in the war, as it completed the second part of the Northern strategy, the Anaconda Plan, and significantly degraded the Confederacy's ability to maintain its war effort

.The siege lasted 47 days, and after the Confederate surrender, Vicksburg fell to the Union, ensuring their control of the Mississippi River and dividing the Confederacy in two
