Banff, located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, is one part resort town and one part breathtaking natural retreat.

Life is a little different at over 4,600 feet in elevation—by the way, that makes Banff Canada’s highest town. During your Banff sightseeing, you’ll learn that the town’s residents and visitors are a lively bunch, and you’ll find the local businesses are perfect for this festive crowd. Choose from over 100 restaurants to dine at, or stop by one or two of the dozens of pubs and cafes for an inexpensive snack and drink after walking through the many boutiques. You can also enjoy a marvelous time after the sun goes down; try dancing the night away at the Dancing Sasquatch, or visiting one of Banff’s other nightclubs.

Banff National Park is known for its wildlife, some of which frequents Banff itself. You’ll often spot deer at the outskirts of town, some of which are friendly and curious about people. Once you say hello to the deer, make the drive to nearby Johnston Canyon, where you can take in snow-capped alpine scenery straight out of a fairy tale.

Warm up after all this time spent outside: head to the Banff Upper Hot Springs. This exquisite spa has treated visitors to hot water and stunning views of the Rockies for over a century, and will continue to do so for a century to come.

When you imagine the Canadian Rockies, Banff National Park is likely the image that comes to mind. While a beautiful location for hiking and relaxation during the summer, this 2,500 square mile alpine mountain sanctuary comes alive during the winter.

Snowy forests, glacier-carved lakes, and icefields set the scene in this, Canada’s first national park. Your Banff National Park tour begins in Banff itself, a resort town with a casual atmosphere, loaded with bars and restaurants, and continues into the park’s vast outdoor space, which is often utilized for winter activities. Whether you’re an experienced skier or are new to the sport, you’ll find thousands of acres of slopes to carve up. Take lessons in town or at one of the resorts dotting the mountains, or, if you’re not sure about skiing, try snowshoeing and hiking through the pristine wilderness. Embark on the Johnston Canyon Ice Walk for one of the most astonishing views of nature you’ll ever see…or book a sleigh ride or dog sledding ride for an adventure straight out of a storybook.

Ready to really appreciate some natural beauty? Your Banff National Park sightseeing will lead you to the Banff Gondola and let it take you to the summit for a view of Bow Valley and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. We promise you’ve never seen anything like it.

The ULTIMATE Banff TRAVEL GUIDE 2024

Here it is, the Banff National Park COMPLETE Travel Guide for 2024.

I have been visiting Banff since the 1970s, after having moved to Calgary. I also worked for the local Tourist Board for 10 years promoting the Banff area. I LOVE Banff, go to the Park at least 3-4 times a year, and want to share the Park with you.

In this video, I talk about how to get to Banff, how to get around the Park, where to stay (hotels and camping), where to eat, where to get great coffee (Banff has GREAT coffee) and of course, all of the attractions (including the townsite, museums, the Banff Springs Hotel, Surprise Corner, Vermilion Lakes, Two Jack Lake, Lake Minnewanka, the Banff Gondola, Johnston Canyon, Castle Mountain, Lake Louise, Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, and the Icefield's Parkway. And along the way, I see a bear!

Banff National Park is a protected area located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada. It was established in 1885, making it the oldest national park in Canada and the third-oldest in the world. Banff National Park covers an area of 6,641 square kilometers and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves, elk, and mountain goats.

The park's landscape is characterized by majestic mountains, pristine lakes, and dense forests. Some of the most popular attractions in Banff National Park include Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and the Columbia Icefield. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, skiing, and wildlife watching.

Banff National Park is also rich in history and culture. The park is part of the traditional territory of the Indigenous people of the area, including the Stoney Nakoda, Blackfoot, and Tsuu T'ina Nations. The park also has a long history of tourism, with its hot springs attracting visitors as early as the late 1800s.

In recent years, Banff National Park has faced several challenges, including over-tourism and the impact of climate change on the park's ecosystem. As a result, the park has implemented measures to reduce the environmental impact of visitors, such as limiting the number of visitors to certain areas and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Overall, Banff National Park is a stunning natural wonder with a rich history and culture. It provides visitors with the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and to learn about the area's ecology and Indigenous heritage.

When you’re ready to enjoy the most stunning eight minutes of your life, climb aboard the Banff Gondola to take in the gorgeous alpine landscape of Alberta.

The Canadian Rockies are among the most beautiful mountains in the world. In summer, these mountains are exquisite alpine peaks, capped in green trees and towering over lush valleys. In winter, these mountains are arguably even more beautiful—snow-capped precipices that stretch on as far as the eye can see.

You can get an up-close look at this beauty when sightseeing on the Banff Gondola. From the town of Banff, you’ll head to Sulphur Mountain, located just a few miles away. Climb into the glass-enclosed gondola with a handful of other passengers. When the Banff Gondola tour begins, your gondola will ascend the mountain range at a measured pace, giving you plenty of time to see Banff itself, the Bow Valley, and the mountain ranges that comprise the Canadian Rockies.

The Banff Gondola stops at a staggering height of 7,500 feet, allowing you an astonishing view of the world below. Bring your camera to snap some pictures, because you’ll never want to forget the stunning vistas that you see. If you elect to stay on top of the mountain for a bit, you can learn about the history of the region on a one-mile interpretive walk. Alternatively, you can enjoy a meal and refreshments at the nearby restaurant while looking out over one of nature’s most precious accomplishments.

What were your impressions when you took the Banff Gondola ride?

Welcome to the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, located in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Built in 1888, this Scottish Baronial-style structure rests at the foot of the alpine mountains of Banff National Park. Wander through its giant foyer, climb its grand staircases, and marvel at its immense stone banquet rooms—a Fairmont Banff Springs tour is truly an exploration of old-world luxury.

The Fairmont is open year-round, and you’ll find something to do at the “Castle in the Rockies” no matter when you visit. Play golf on the championship course if you’re visiting in the summer months, or strap on your downhill skis once the snow has covered the ground. Winter is particularly spectacular in Banff National Park, where every last tree and stone is covered by a stunning blanket of snow.

Your sightseeing in Fairmont Banff Springs won’t take you too far from the hotel itself. Why venture into the wilderness when you can take in the famous alpine view from the Fairmont’s heated outdoor pool? That’s not to say you’ll never leave your lodging. At the Fairmont Banff Springs, you’ll enjoy easy access to the nearby town of Banff, where you can explore art galleries, sample the local fare, and get to know the friendly locals.

What will you do at the Castle in the Rockies?
