Balkan Street Food in Miami - Cevapcici, Burek & Rakija | Downtown Miami

???? RAKIJA GRILL:
???? DAD:
???? WATCH: Balkan Food on South Beach:

Some of you guys may not know, but in the past, I have spent months traveling around the Balkans in southeast Europe. Come along with me and my dad as we try delicious Balkan street food in Miami!

For this flavor adventure, we headed to Rakija Grill in beautiful downtown Miami. Inside, it reminded me of the farmhouse-style restaurants I had visited in places in the Balkan region. I met Miroslav and Marija, who took me back to the kitchen.

We got to see them prepare some goulash, sarma, Karadjordjeva schnitzel, pita bread, cevapcici, a Serbian burger stuffed with cheese, burek, and more.

Rakija Grill also has a mini market where you can buy sweets, sauces, meats, and vegetables from the Balkans. On the wall of the restaurant is a giant map of Yugoslavia, which broke up to form the Balkans.

Then, at the bar, we tried some rakija. They chill the glass in ice. They have several varieties of rakija, including peach, raspberry, plum with honey, quince, grape, prune, and even one with 23 karat gold flakes called the Golden Rooster!

Then, it was time to eat! We had 11 different dishes. We started with the schnitzel, which has mozzarella cheese inside. I loved the contrast between crispy, creamy, and meaty and the lemon and tartar sauce give it a nice zest.

Next was the 15-piece cevapcici inside the huge pita bread. We had it with a pepper sauce called ajvar. It was so flavorful, and the bread was delicious but different. You can also eat it with a thick yogurt sauce.

After some energizing prune rakia was the Serbian burger. It’s a monster! It’s great with ajvar, which is way better than ketchup!

Then, we dove into the sarma, which was to die for! It’s full of meat, rice, and spices. The flavor is incredible and I loved the textures. It’s Miroslav’s grandmother’s recipe!

We cleansed our palates with a strong raspberry rakia and then tried Uštipci, which is a puffy Serbian donut, with a creamy yogurt.

Next were red peppers stuffed with feta cheese. They’re addicting and have some spiciness to them! Roasted red peppers are so abundant in the Balkans. They’re soaked in olive oil and are so soft and so healthy! It’s super fresh and tasty!

Then, we had the burek, which was served with a yogurt drink. It’s soft and full of yummy layers but is crispy on the outside!

Next was the goulash, which falls apart in your mouth. It’s creamy and has a nice broth as well. It’s a super hearty dish!

Next was the prune rakia, which is so good! Then we went for Serbian salami, which is unique and full of flavor. There was also some yummy, gamy dried beef and a prosciutto-like meat. After that was shopska salad, which is a refreshing Bulgarian staple with cucumbers, tomato, and parsley with feta cheese on top.

We followed that with a monstrous meat platter with cevapcici, a Serbian burger, veal sausage, and chicken. The veal sausage was super unique and the chicken was very nice. Next was the apricot rakia, which is like a port wine, and a peach rakia, which is unbelievable! We finished up with a fantastic grape rakia with a beautiful clarity.

For dessert, we had tulumba (fried dough that’s slow-cooked and soaked in sugar syrup). It’s crumbly and contains lemon zest. We followed that with a Greek-style baklava with walnuts. We also had some chocolate with cream, which was different and had a crunchy cookie on the bottom. It’s also creamy and fluffy!

Next was some Barovo wine from northern Macedonia. It was incredible! We ended with Turkish coffee, which was strong and gave us some energy!

Eating BALKAN FOOD for 24 HOURS!! Burek, Cevapcici & Rakija | Miami, Florida

???????? RAKIJA LOUNGE:
???????? RAKIJA GRILL:

One of the first regions of the world I explored as a professional travel content creator back in 2008 is the Balkans. During that trip, I fell in love with the hearty and fresh food of the Balkan region. I miss it a lot, so I decided to remedy that by eating nothing but Balkan food for 24 hours in my hometown of Miami!

???? WATCH: Balkan Street Food in Miami:

My Balkan food adventure began at Rakija Lounge in South Beach, where I’d have some local favorites for breakfast! It’s a super chill lounge and restaurant with a beautiful outdoor area. I headed straight to the back with Marija to watch them make some fried dough!

The first dish I watched them make is tulumba, a cylindrical deep-fried snack from the Ottoman Empire that’s similar to Spanish churros and Indian jalebis. They deep-fry it and then dunk it into a lemon-flavored simple syrup.

Elsewhere, they were making burek, which is a flaky, stuffed pastry that can be stuffed with cheese, meat, vegetables, and more. They stretch out the dough, stuff it, and make the burek to order. The baking process takes 25 minutes.

We had a spinach burek and a cheese burek. Then, I headed out to the dining area with the owner, Miroslav and Vesko. We also had a cup of yogurt, a flight of rakija, cold cuts, and a fried bread called uštipci.

We started with the Golden Rooster rakija, which contains edible 24-karat gold flakes. It was so smooth and is made from quince fruit. Then, I jumped on the uštipci, which is like a donut. It doesn’t have much flavor, so you dip it into a type of sour cream. It’s also great with the cold cuts wrapped around it!

Next was the Yebiga rakija, which is super strong! I followed that with the ricotta burek, which was beautiful, flaky, and airy. It’s light, so it’s not filling. It was great dipped into the yogurt! Then, we had some honey rakija, which is my favorite!

I ended with some delicious Turkish coffee, and then Miroslav and I drove to Rakija Grill, the sister restaurant to Rakija Lounge. We drove past the cruise ship port and through downtown.

Rakija Grill has outdoor seating and a traditional taverna-style interior. It’s very reminiscent of the restaurants in the Balkans. They have lots of wine and rakija and traditional décor on the walls. They also have a little market where you can buy foods from the region including snacks, meat, and cheeses.

In the kitchen, they had just mixed the meat to make cevapi and pljeskavica, which is basically a Serbian burger patty stuffed with cheese and a cheesy, creamy spread called kaymak. They also made some chicken karadjordjeva, which is a type of pounded schnitzel stuffed with kaymak and rolled up.

I also watched them grill the cevapi, which are basically sausage, and bake some tavas!

In the dining area, I enjoyed some rakija and the jumped on the chicken karadjordjeva and French fries. It came with some delicious tartar sauce and was very filling! I’d had similar dishes in Italy and Austria, but never rolled up like this!

Next was an amazing plum rakija and some sarma, which is a cabbage leaf stuffed with meat and rice. It’s one of my favorites! We followed that with some mashed potatoes and ghoulash. I loved the vegetables and chunky beef!

Then, I had the pljeskavica and cevapi sandwich. They came with ajvar (a red pepper paste) and kaymak. The bread was incredible and the beef was out of this world! It was so massive, I couldn’t finish it, so I took it home with me. Miroslav even gave me some gifts to take home!

Later, I enjoyed a Balkan dinner with my wife and daughters. It was so delicious! I ended my day with some rakija from North Macedonia!

Macedonian cuisine was something we didn't know much about but is now one of our favourites! It is almost a representation of the Balkans itself, with an incredible mix of influence from other areas in the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire, some Slavic, Italian influence and just the amazing freshness of the ingredients straight from the fertile land. Amazing ALBANIAN STREET FOOD!! Watermelon & Souvlaki | Albania to Miami

???? TRAVEL MEDIA EU:
???????? DAVID’S BEEN HERE ALBANIA SHIRTS:

My 14th and final day in Albania continued with some amazing Albanian street food as I made my way back to the airport in Tirana, Albania. Join me on my final Albanian adventure as I visit my friend’s farm in Daias, return to Tirana, and travel back home to Miami!

???? BALKAN PEARLS TOUR OPERATOR:
???? RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

With my time in Albania winding down, my boy Erjan from Travel Media EU took me to his family’s farm in Daias, a beautiful farming village south of Tirana. It’s full of nature and is reached via a one-lane highway going up a mountain!

There, I got to see their incredible fields where they grow lots of fruits, including melons and grapes. They have some beautiful watermelons growing on the vines there. On the farm, they also have never-ending grape vines. They grow the grapes to make rakia and wine! It’s a massive farm!

I tried some grapes, which were sweet and about 15 days away from harvest. They grow cabernet, merlot, and shesh i zi grapes! As I saw the property, we began brainstorming ideas for a tortoise sanctuary, which is now Turtle Farm Albania! It’s such a spectacular place.

Up at Erjan’s house, there is a rakija distillation set-up. There, I met Erjan’s mother and father and the guest area inside the house. Erjan told me that they also grow tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers on the property, as well as basil, which I tried. It was so fresh and delicious!

Erjan’s mom gave me some candy as a welcoming gift, and then he cut open the cantaloupe, which was absolutely delicious. Then, he sliced up the watermelon we had grabbed earlier, which was incredibly juicy and sweet!

Then, we drove through the town and headed back to Tirana. We passed by some very luxurious villas that cost up to a million Euros. Politicians, musicians, actors, and influencers live in this area!

We drove through the residential and touristic part of Tirana, and passed a faculty where Erjan studied English and French. We also saw the U.S. Embassy and arrived at Opa to eat some souvlaki. They had pork and chicken and stuffed the pitas with meat, tomatoes, onions, fries, and more. They also serve gyros, falafel, schnitzel, kebabs, calamari, and a lot more!

I put on my mask in the car and arrived at the airport. It’s the only airport in Albania and dropped off my car at Rental Car Albania. I couldn’t enter the airport until 2 hours before my boarding time, 8:45 p.m.

I started on my souvlaki, which was fantastic. The chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and French fries was excellent. It’s quick, affordable, and super tasty!

I said goodbye to Erjan and headed to my gate for my flight back to London. Inside the airport, they had social distancing measures in place. I would have a 12-hour connection in London and then fly straight to Miami the next morning.

After 3 hours, I landed in London-Heathrow at 11:05 p.m. I stayed in the airport and posted up at a power bank at the bottom of the escalator to enjoy another souvlaki. The airport was mostly empty, so it was safe.

I slept on a chair and woke back up at 5 a.m. with 3 hours to go before my flight. Then, I headed to my gate. There would only be 14 people onboard. I had never seen London-Heathrow so empty. I had a row to myself for my 9-hour-and-10-minute flight and finally landed at my second home, Miami International Airport. I couldn’t wait to see my family again!

Persian Street Food in Miami - Kubideh, Shrimp & Chicken Kabobs | South Miami

???? SHAHS OF KABOB:
???? DAD:
???? WATCH: KUWAITI THALI BREAKFAST:

My next street food adventure in Miami took me to Shahs of Kabob, an eatery in South Miami that offers delicious Persian cuisine! Join me and my dad as we dive into some delicious Persian street food in Miami!

Persian food is from Iran and consists of lots of meat, including kabobs, as well as salads, dips, and rice! Inside, we met Amin, who took us into the kitchen. The aroma was incredible! They were preparing chicken kabobs and beef kabobs and lamb kabobs. They offer six different kabobs, which also include churrasco and shrimp!

I watched them grill up the kabobs over the flames. It was hot standing over them! They were also making a flatbread that reminded me of Armenian lavash. It was round, like a puffed-up chapati.

Our enormous kabob platter contained 10 different kabobs, including the kubideh (lamb ribs and beef ribs), two shrimp, chicken, and two types of steak. We also had tomatoes, bread, onions, and basil on the side. Everything looked outstanding! I couldn’t wait to dive in.

Then, it was time to eat! We also had a tzatziki-like Persian dip, as well as basmati rice with saffron rice, hummus, and a sparkling yogurt soda with mint. We also had two salad bowls, one with strawberries and one with cranberries and walnuts.

We started with the kubideh with basil and bread. It was incredible! I added some of the dip, which was very creamy. It was similar to tzatziki but chunkier. The juices coming out of the lamb and beef were stellar! I loved it with the red onion which added a new level of flavor!

Next were the shrimp. It was so fresh! I love that in Central Asia, they make sandwiches with bread, different greens, and meat. Then, I went for the shrimp by itself, which was excellent.

Then, I tried the kubideh with bread and grilled tomato. It was a huge burst of juicy flavor! I loved it! Then, we took a little detour and tried some of the bread with the hummus. It was a nice, mashed chickpeas with oil on top. It was fantastic and different from the other hummuses we’d tried that week. It was so creamy!

Next was the salad with cucumber, onion, and tomatoes. It was similar to a Greek salad, except without the feta and olives. Then, we went for the rice with some of the cut-up kubideh. It was very good. I couldn’t get enough of the kabobs. They’re the best kabobs in Miami!

The chicken kabobs were amazing, especially with the dip and spices. Then, we jumped on the cranberry and walnut salad, which was very refreshing and also contained cucumbers, tomatoes, and feta cheese. The combination was amazing!

The strawberry salad with nuts, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, and onions was another summer salad, and super refreshing. I loved how nutty it was!

Next were the two filet mignons. The meat was nice and juicy but the mint and basil made it! And the bread was outstanding with it.

We finished with the regular yogurt drink, which was like a liquidy yogurt. For me, the kubideh was the best, and my dad loved the shrimp!

My epic Miami Street Food series continues with a taste of American Latin street food in Miami! Come along with me and my dad as we try mouthwatering dishes like a cheesy frita burger, a burrito, a jerk chicken hot dog, and much more!

We headed to the Bird Road Art District in Miami, where Are You Hungry? Grill and Unseen Creatures Brewing are located. At Are You Hungry? Grill, we’d try some American-Latin fusion street food, and drink some craft beer at Unseen Creatures Brewing!

At Are You Hungry? Grill, I met the owner, Raul, who made us a Wagyu burger with beer cheese made with beer from Unseen Creatures. He also made us a frita burger (a beef burger with tiny, thinly-cut French fries on it), which contains Mexican chorizo and is a take on a Frita Cubana, a chicken burrito, and a jerk chicken hot dog that contains an IPA barbecue sauce and a secret sauce.

First, I watched him make the Frita Cubanas with 5-oz. Wagyu patties. He cooks the beer for 4-5 minutes, which cooks out the alcohol and reduces it, and then he makes a roux and includes several types of cheese like Colby jack and cheddar as well as pimentos and jalapenos. Their barbecue sauce also has an IPA beer in it!

Then, we watched him cook up the marinated chicken breast and grill a jalapeno-cheddar tortilla. He then added garlic-cilantro sauce, white rice, black beans, homemade pico salsa, and shredded Colby jack cheese. Then, he made the jerk dog, which is a chicken hot dog with jerk sauce and melted provolone cheese, and the two sauces. We’d eat everything under a table set up under a tent. We had a double IPA and a house IPA! I couldn’t wait to dig in!

I started with the double IPA, which was great and pretty strong! The house IPA was cloudy, citrusy, and refreshing. Then, we dove into the frita burgers. This one was more of a gourmet-style frita burger. It was so juicy and I loved the provolone cheese and the sauces. The spicy chorizo was incredible as well! It had a ton of fritas in it and the bread was fantastic. The quality of the beef was outstanding!

Next was the Wagyu burger with beer cheese. The cheese was unreal and had a nice kick to it. I had to dip the burger back into the plate to get all the cheese that had dripped out. It was an explosion of flavor! I couldn’t get enough of the quality of the beef!

Then, we went for the jerk chicken hot dogs. Mine had spicy sauce on it while my dad’s had the barbecue and secret sauces. I loved the chicken and the cheese inside. I barely eat hot dogs, but this was exceptional. It didn’t even taste like chicken!

Next, we had come fried plantain chips that had some lime on them. Then, we finished with the burrito, which had a melted cheese crust on the outside! I dipped it into a garlic aioli sauce. I loved the gallo pinto sauce inside as well as the tender chicken, beans, and rice. It was super filling with a cheesy exterior. It was the ultimate burrito!

Then, we headed inside Unseen Creatures Brewing, where we met Marco. It’s a farmhouse-inspired brewery. They had 15 beers on tap before the pandemic, and have 6-8 brands now. They have some mixed culture sour beers, some IPAs, lagers, and stouts as well. They also have a 4% saison. Their tap handles have fake deer antlers on them!

We tried four delicious beers and went on a tour of the facility! They have a 7-barrel setup and brew 2-3 times per week. What an epic day!

Argentine Street Food in Miami - Chorizo, Morcilla & Empanadas | Coral Gables

???? RINCON ARGENTINO:
???? WATCH: Miami Food Series:

My hometown of Miami, Florida is a massive hub for Latin-American culture and cuisines, so I knew I had to try some Argentine street food as part of my epic Miami Street Food series! Come along with me and my wife Ana as we try Argentine street food in Miami!

We arrived at Rincon Argentino in Coral Gables, one of the best and most authentic Argentine restaurants in Miami. In the kitchen, Matias showed me the asador, which is the method they use to cook their meat. They were grilling lamb, bone-in ribeyes, shortribs, and more. They smoke it for six hours and cooks so that the juices run down the meat.

They also had provolenta, which is a type of cheese, along with morcilla (blood sausage), chorizo, a la molleja (glands).

At our table, we had part of our feast, which included morcilla, beans, empanadas, provolenta, chorizo, barilla sausage, las mollejas, and more!

The provolenta has prosciutto, red pepper, tomatoes, and oregano on top. It was moist, with a burst of juiciness from the tomatoes and a nice kick of salt from the prosciutto. I also loved the oregano throughout.

Next, we had a wine from Mendoza, the most famous wine region in Argentina. Then, we tried the chorizo and barilla sausage. The barilla sausage was salty and full of herbs, while the chorizo was super juicy and cooked to perfection.

The morcilla is very soft and bloody in the center. I love the flavors and textures. It completely falls apart in your mouth! It’s like a meaty blood pudding!

Next was a fried beef empanada. It contained a boiled egg and onions as well. The minced meat was juicy, and the crust was crispy without being too deep-fried.

The molleja, or sweetbreads, were next! They’re quite fatty but are full of flavor, and come with red pepper and tomatoes. The lemon helps cut the fat!

The main course were shortribs, ribeye, and papas caseras. These are more family-style dishes rather than street food. Both meats had been cooking for six hours. The papas caseras are basically potato chips. They’re crunchy and super tasty!

The shortrib was perfectly cooked with a pink interior and a nice fat cap on top, along with a crispy, charcoal crust. It was so tender! It was unreal and so flavorful!

Next was the ribeye, which is one of the more tender parts of the cow. It was super juicy and was nice and medium. I loved the way they grilled their meats. It makes such a huge difference in the flavor!

Then, I headed back to the kitchen where they were making 5 different desserts, including pana cotta with crumbled cookies on top; balcarce with peaches, whipped cream, and meringue; crepes with dulce de leche and vanilla; crème brulee, and chocolate mousse.

The crème brulee was caramelized on top but super creamy in the middle. I loved the burnt top! It was too good! Next were the crepes, which I had only seen in Argentina. The dulce de leche oozes out. Ana tried it with the ice cream. It was so sweet and decadent!

The balcarce is an Argentine-style peaches and cream cake with meringue. It’s fluffy and has dulce de leche on the plate. It’s extremely decadent! And next was the pana cotta, which had raspberries as well as cookies on top. It’s basically thickened cream with gelatin in it. It’s a very Italian dish, because a huge portion of the people in Argentina are descended from Italy.

We finished with the chocolate mousse with whipped cream, strawberries, and mint. It was so rich and creamy. The strawberries add a nice, summer twist!

Ana loved the chorizo and shortrib, while my favorites were the shortrib, mollejas, the morcilla, and the pana cotta.
