BURGOS, SPAIN

2018 Sep 11, Day 11 -- After a visit to Puente la Reina and Logrono, we finally arrived at Burgos, a city of Spain located in the autonomous community of Castile and León. Burgos is a very popular pilgrim route to Camino de Santiago. September weather is a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, perfect for trekking and holiday. Burgos is rich in ancient churches and convents, and most notable church of all is Burgos Cathedral, a Gothic church declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, El Cid, (the famous knight from Medieval Spain's history) and his wife Dona Jimena were buried. Be there in time for sunset when the church bell rings and the automaton clock, Papamoscas (Flycathcer) opens his mouth to tell the time. Just like any old town in Spain, walking around Burgos' old town in the tradition of Spanish ambience is a lot of fun. Sampling Burgos' pinchos and wine may want you to feel like staying here forever. Next stop is Sahagun.

[4k] BURGOS- Walking around the famous sights of the old town that you must visit in Burgos

[4k]4k spain walk.
Burgos,Spain.
A two-hour drive from Madrid will take you to Burgos, the 11th-century capital of the Castilla dynasty. It is also the birthplace of the Spanish hero El Cid. Take a walk through the beautiful Burgos Cathedral, its streets, and Mayor Square to see the tourist attractions of Burgos.
Burgos is a city of Spain located in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is the capital and most populated municipality of the province of Burgos.
It is situated in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, on the confluence of the Arlanzón river tributaries, at the edge of the central plateau. The municipality has a population of about 180,000 inhabitants. It forms part of the Camino de Santiago.
Founded in 884 by Diego Rodríguez Porcelos, Burgos soon became the leading city of the embryonic County of Castile. 11th century chieftain Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (El Cid) is connected to the city, as he was born near Burgos and was raised and educated there. In a long-lasting decline since the 17th century, following the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Burgos became the headquarters of the Francoist proto-government. Declared in 1964 as Pole of Industrial Promotion and in 1969 as Pole of Industrial Development, the city has grown since then in terms of economic activity. At the regional level, Burgos forms part of an economic axis together with the cities of Valladolid and Palencia. In 2008, the international Burgos Airport started to offer commercial flights.
The Museum of Human Evolution opened here in 2010. The museum features remains of the first hominins in Europe, which lived in this area 750,000-800,000 years ago. The Cathedral of Burgos is a World Heritage Site. Burgos was selected as the Spanish Gastronomy Capital of 2013. In 2015 it was named City of Gastronomy by UNESCO and has been part of the Creative Cities Network since then.

Construction on Burgos' Gothic Cathedral began in 1221 and spanned mainly from the 13th to 15th centuries. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The west front is flanked by towers terminating in octagonal spires covered with open stonework traceries. The middle section, which serves as an entrance, has three alabaster pilasters, the intercolumnar spaces bearing panel-pictures representing the martyrdom of saints. The façade possesses ornate and fantastic surface decoration.
The octagonal chapel of the Condestable, in florid, thus highly sculpted, Gothic design, has a roof finished with balustraded turrets, needle-pointed pinnacles and statues. In the lower portion, coats of arms, shields and crouching lions have been worked into the ensemble. The exterior of the sacristy is decorated with carved traceries, figures of angels and armoured knights. The elaborate tabernacle is composed of two octagonal sections in Corinthian style.

????Catedral de Burgos????

The Santa Iglesia Catedral Basilica Metropolitana de Santa María is a cathedral temple of Catholic worship dedicated to the Virgin Mary , in the Spanish city of Burgos .

Its construction began in 1221, following French Gothic patterns . It had very important modifications in the 15th and 16th centuries : the spiers of the main façade, the Constable's chapel and the dome of the transept, flamboyant Gothic elements that give the temple its unmistakable profile. The last important works (the sacristy or the chapel of Santa Tecla ) already belong to the 18th century , a century in which the Gothic portals on the main façade were also modified. The construction and subsequent renovations were made with limestone extracted from the quarriesfrom the nearby town of Hontoria de la Cantera .
The decorative elements and the liturgical furniture inside belong to various artistic styles, from the Gothic, the Renaissance or the Baroque .

The design of the main façade is related to the classical French Gothic of the great cathedrals ( Paris or Reims ). It consists of three sections topped by two square side towers. The openwork spiers of Germanic influence were added in the 15th century and are the work of Juan de Colonia . Outside are outstanding also covers the Sarmental and Coronería, Gothic of the century xiii , and the cover of Pellejería with Renaissance-Plateresque influences of the century xvi . The interior elevation of the temple takes as reference to the Cathedral of Bourges .

The Burgos cathedral was declared a National Monument on April 8, 1885 and a World Heritage Site by Unesco on October 31, 1984. It is the only Spanish cathedral that has this distinction from Unesco independently, without being linked to the historic center of a city (as in the cases of Salamanca , Santiago de Compostela , Ávila , Córdoba , Toledo or Cuenca ) or in the company of other buildings, such as in Oviedo , Seville or Zaragoza. It is also the highest-ranking Catholic temple in Castilla y León as it is the only temple that, being a metropolitan cathedral, is also a basilica.

????Casa del Cordón????

The Palace of the Condestables of Castilla , popularly known as Casa del Cordón , is an original palace from the 15th century that stands in the historic center of Burgos , presiding over the old Plaza del Mercado Mayor , which was formed by the current squares of La Libertad and Santo Domingo de Guzmán . Its promoter was the Constable of Castile Don Pedro Fernández de Velasco , married to Doña Mencía de Mendoza y Figueroa . The initial design is attributable to Juan de Colonia and his son Simónand it is a civil building in a Gothic style of great beauty and harmony, although today it is greatly modified with respect to the original design. Throughout the building there are numerous representations of the heraldic shields of the marriage owner of the palace (Velasco and Mendoza), and specifically the two shields over the main door are linked by means of a Franciscan cord, also sculpted in the stone.
A cord or chains hanging on the door of a house indicate that a king has slept in it. Dona Mencía was a devotee of Saint Francis and had the Franciscan cord carved. This cordon is the one that, in the popular heritage, gave the building its name.
It currently houses a cultural center and the central offices and headquarters of a bank.
