A Volcano has erupted in Iceland after weeks of earthquakes. Mount Fagradalsfjall stands just 20 miles from Iceland's capital Reykjavik. The volcano, named Litli Hrútur erupted on July 11, 2023, captivating the world with stunning visuals.

Eruptions are not uncommon on the European island nation. There are roughly 130 volcanoes in Iceland and 33 are considered active. The highest number in Europe.

It happened on June 24, 1982. On a calm summer night, passengers boarded the plane that would take them from Kuala Lumpur to Perth. The atmosphere was relaxed; the weather was fine, there were no approaching thunderstorms, and the plane didn't have any technical issues.

There were 247 passengers and 100 tons of fuel on board the plane. But by the time the plane was in the air south-east of Jakarta, Indonesia, the first officer was sending out a Mayday distress call. All four of their engines had failed...

SUMMARY:
- It happened on June 24, 1982. British Airways Flight 9, also called Speedbird 9, performed its scheduled flight from London Heathrow to Auckland, with 5 stops on the way: in Bombay, Madras, Kuala Lumpur, Perth, and Melbourne.
- There were 247 passengers and 100 tons (90 tonnes) of fuel on board the plane. That night, although moonless, was quite clear, and the flying conditions couldn't be better. All in all, the crew expected an uneventful 5-hour flight.
- The windshields were ablaze with the most intense phenomenon of St. Elmo's fire the captain had ever seen in his life. As soon as the captain fastened his seat belt, he looked at the weather radar - and it wasn't showing any thunder clouds at all!
- The flight went on, but the smoke started to accumulate in the airplane's passenger cabin. And while at first, it resembled cigarette smoke, with every passing minute, it was getting thicker and acquired the ominous stench of sulfur.
- It was 8:42 when Barry Townley-Freeman shouted that engine number four had flamed out. Without losing time, the crew shut down the engine by arming the fire extinguishers and cutting off the fuel supply.
- The captain estimated that they could glide 15 miles (24 km) for every mile (1.6 km) they dropped. It meant that the plane was able to glide for only 23 minutes and cover the distance of 91 nautical miles (168 km).
- Mothers were hugging their kids, husbands were squeezing their wives' hands, flight attendants were teaming solo passengers together so they could support each other in the seemingly last minutes of their lives.
- When the pilots tried to restart the engines again at 8:56 PM, engine number four roared back to life! With its help, the captain managed to reduce the speed of their descent. Even better, several minutes later the three other engines started as well!
- As the plane was approaching Jakarta, it turned out that the cockpit crew couldn't see anything through the windshield, even though the visibility outside was perfect.
- They could see the runway lights through a tiny strip of window, but the aircraft's landing lights didn't work. Even so, the captain managed to perform a perfectly smooth landing.
- During the investigation, it turned out that the near-tragedy happened because the plane flew into a cloud of volcanic ash left after the eruption of Mount Galuggung in 1982.

Colima, Mexico: Smoke And Ash From 'Fire' Volcano

Two new eruptions of the famous Mexican Colima volcanok, called also Fire Volcano.

Mexico contains over 3,000 volcanos, but only 14 are considered active.

Major eruptions in Mexican history have included the 1953 eruption of the Paricutin Volcano in Michoacan, the 1982 eruption of Tacana Volcano in Chiapas and the 1986 eruption of the Colima Volcano.

TheHunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai Eruption, a Multi-Hazard Event

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, located in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga, has erupted three times in less than thirty days. The volcano has sporadically erupted since 2009 with the most recent activity beginning in late December 2021 when a series of Surtseyan eruptions built up and reshaped the island while sending bursts of tephra and volcanic gasses spewing from the vent.

On Jan.13, 2022, NOAA’s GOES West satellite captured the second eruption. According to local officials, the eruption had a radius of 161.5 miles and sent ash, steam, and gas 12.4 miles into the air. It was more powerful than the previous eruption on Dec. 20, but an even more intense series of explosions began on January 15. The eruptions generated atmospheric shock waves, sonic booms, and tsunami waves that traveled the world and were heard as far away as Alaska.

Satellite-based lidar and limb sounder data indicated that the eruption was strong enough to send volcanic material well into the lower stratosphere (which generally begins 9 miles up in this part of the world) where, according to rawinsonde data from Fiji, easterly winds propelled the ash. Scientists watch closely when volcanic materials reach this relatively dry layer of the atmosphere because particles linger longer and travel farther than when they remain in the lower, wetter troposphere.

The plume of material created what volcanologists call an umbrella cloud with crescent-shaped bow shock waves. These also triggered a vast number of lightning strikes that were seen by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) onboard the GOES West satellite. “The umbrella cloud was about 500 kilometers (300 miles) in diameter at its maximum extent,” said Michigan Tech volcanologist Simon Carn. “That is comparable to Pinatubo and one of the largest of the satellite era. However, the involvement of water in the Tonga eruption may have increased the explosivity compared to a purely magmatic eruption like Pinatubo.” It has been estimated that the eruption was the equivalent of around 10 megatons of TNT.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai first formed between Dec. 2014 and Jan. 2015, when the previously underwater volcano erupted. When all the dust, rock, and ash settled, a newly-formed island remained between two older islands, with a summit reaching 400 feet high. It was the first of its kind to form in 53 years, so scientists have been able to study its birth and evolution in vivid detail from space.

The volcano is about 40 miles north of Tonga’s main island, Tongatapu, near the international dateline. Tonga is home to 105,000 people and northeast of New Zealand and southeast of Fiji.

The blast and associated tsunami caused significant damage along the western coast of the main island of Tongatapu. A thick layer of ash remains across Tongatapu, said the New Zealand High Commission in a recent statement.

At least two Tongans have lost their lives to the recent eruption, and thousands more are battling the remaining debris. One major concern is access to safe drinking water, which can be contaminated by ash and smoke from the blast.

In addition to local damage, the powerful explosion triggered large waves and tsunami advisories that reached Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the west coasts of North and South America. Parts of Japan saw waves as high as nine feet tall, and the west coast of the United States received swells around three and four feet high. In Peru, two people died from the high water, and an oil spill was caused by the waves.

Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAACs) are responsible for issuing volcanic ash advisories 24/7. VAAC forecasters use information from NOAA satellites to monitor clouds whose location, evolution and/or spectral properties are consistent with volcanic activity. The satellites can estimate the height of ash clouds, determine the extent of ash, and estimate the amount of ash present. The GOES-West GLM also imaged thousands of lightning flashes during the eruption. The advisories are also useful to air traffic controllers because large amounts of ash can significantly damage aircraft and are a major safety concern.

How to Survive Volcanic ASH CLOUD! #SurvivalTips

You may not know this but there approximately 1,500 potentially active volcanoes on this planet and that doesn't include those on the ocean floor. Over 800 million people live within 60 miles of an active volcano, considering that volcanic ash is capable of traveling thousands of miles, it's probably best for us ALL to learn a little about the danger it presents and the steps we can take to survive.

The Dangers.
Volcanic ash is tremendously disruptive, although we may think that falling rocks, lava, fire, and hot toxic gases are a volcano's main danger, the most common cause of death from a volcano is actually suffocation.
Volcanic ash clouds can contain dangerous aerosols including Carbon dioxide, Sulfur dioxide, and Hydrochloric and Hydroflouric acid.
These aerosols are capable of building up in the atmosphere and can affect the climate all over the world, the ash cloud can also block out the sun thus cooling down the earth.
These aerosols can also fall back down in form of precipitation, the poisonous gases reacting with the water to create Acid rain.
Even if the ash cloud returns to earth in a dry state, it is still acidic and causes harmful effects on soil, forests, streams and lakes, killing crops, poisoning livestock and polluting water sources. Its corrosive power also affects telecommunications and electric infrastructure, corroding insulators and causing power outages.

Survival Tips.

1. Pack a Go bag.
Pack a few necessary things like Toiletries, money, documents, ID, and such like in a bag. it may seem silly and you may not even need it but if you do have to leave, you'll be grateful for it.

2. Information
Get as much information as possible, watch the news, listen to the radio, check the internet. learn all you can about the volcanos activity, the ash cloud, and the weather forecast and wind directions.

3. Materials.
You'll need some basic materials before the ash fall event, these are, dust masks, goggles or some form of eye protection, a battery-powered radio, torches and batteries, plastic sheeting, and duct tape.

4. Provisions
Make sure you have the basics, DON'T BE A D*** AND GO OUT AND PANIC BUY! but make sure you have enough water and basic food to last through the ash fall event. Bear in mind that there may be power outages some make sure you have some rations that can be eaten cold or raw. oh! and toilet roll, lots and lots of toilet roll!

5. Protection.
If you have a car, make sure it's parked undercover, any livestock or animals should be sealed in a shelter with enough food and water and any pets should be kept inside. If you have a rainwater collection system, disconnect it from your roof and seal it.

6. Sealing.
Seal your windows and doors from the outside where possible, using plastic sheeting and duct tape. Identify and seal any other possible locations where ash could enter, for example, fireplace or vent pipe, and put rolled up damp towels under the doors.

7. More Information.
Stay Informed about the volcanos situation, wind directions, and the ash cloud's progress, and do not exit your property until the authorities deem it safe to do so.

A restive volcano in the central Philippines spewed a column of ash at least 1 km (0.6 mile) into the sky on Sunday, prompting authorities to raise the alert at Mount Bulusan by one notch and remind residents not to enter the danger zone.The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised its alert on Bulusan to level 1, or low level of volcanic unrest, from 0 on a five-level scale, which means it is currently in an abnormal condition.In the 24 hours before the eruption, 77 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, the institute said in a statement.The huge cloud of ash from Bulusan turned the skies grey, as seen in a video shared on Facebook by a resident of Casiguran town on Bulusan's northern slopes.Bulusan, among the Philippines' 24 active volcanoes, last erupted in June 2017, the institute said. The Philippines is in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common. Mount Pinatubo, on Luzon island in the northern Philippines, erupted in 1991 after lying dormant for 600 years. That eruption buried dozens of villages under tonnes of mud. More than 800 people died, mostly from diseases in crowded evacuation camps.

Mexico: Watch How Popocatepetl Volcano Dramatically Erupted

Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano erupted on Sunday (April 3), lighting up the night sky while belching ash and smoke, authorities reported.

At 20:30 hrs local time (2:30 hrs GMT on Monday), a spectacular column of ash erupted into the air from the volcano, located 50 miles (80 km) southeast of the capital.

National Civil Protection Coordinator Luis Felipe Puente said in his Twitter account, ash and smoke rose 2,000 metres (6,561 feet) above the crater of the volcano, with the heaviest ashfall towards the east and northeast of the volcano.

The explosion was accompanied by incandescent fragments along Popocatepetl's eastern, northeastern slopes.

Iceland coastguard video shows magma spewing as volcano on Reykjanes Peninsula erupts

A volcanic eruption started on Monday night on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula prompting the country’s civil defence to be on high alert.

The eruption appeared to have occurred about four kilometers (2.4 miles) from the town of Grindavik, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said.

Footage from the Icelandic Coastguard showed magma spewing following the eruption while the sky was turned orange amidst clouds of smoke.

In November, police evacuated the town of Grindavik after strong seismic activity in the area damaged homes and raised fears of an imminent eruption.

Iceland's Meteorological Office said in a statement early on Tuesday that the latest measurements show “the magma is moving to the southwest and the eruption may continue in the direction of Grindavik.”

The size of the eruption and the speed of the lava flow is “many times more than in previous eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula in recent years,” the statement said.

Iceland sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic and averages an eruption every four to five years.

The most disruptive in recent times was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed huge clouds of ash into the atmosphere and grounded flights across Europe for days because of fears ash could damage airplane engines.

Scientists said a new eruption would likely produce lava but not an ash cloud.

The country's National Disaster Mitigation Agency on Monday said it had not received any reports of deaths or injuries in the wake of the eruption.
Sinabung roared back to life in 2010 for the first time in 400 years and has remained highly active since.
A red warning was issued to airlines after the hot dense cloud of ash shot more than 16,400ft (5,000m) into the air and rolling down its slopes.
Three volcanoes are currently erupting in Indonesia, which is located on the fault lines around the Pacific Basin known as the Ring of Fire.
At least 25 people were killed in Mount Sinabung eruptions in recent years.
Seven people were killed in 2016, 16 people died in the 2014 explosion and two people were killed when in 2010.
Hot ash clouds have already travelled as far as three miles (4.km) south of the volcano, disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
Mount Sinabung has released so much ash that a red notice was issued to airlines by the regional volcanic ash advisory centre in Darwin, Australia
Approximately 30,000 people have been forced to leave homes around the mountain in the recent years.
