Botswana Travel | Best Places to Visit in Botswana‎,Okavango Delta,Gaborone

Botswana Travel | Best Places to Visit in Botswana‎,Okavango Delta
Botswana has a huge advantage over the rest of the world when it comes to attracting tourists: the wildlife. The array of animals that reside in or pass through the country is phenomenal. Ranging from endangered animals such as wild dogs and rhinos to the numerous and thriving bird life that inhabits the area.

The natural landscapes are impressive too from the vast and imposing Kalahari Desert to the sublime serenity of the Okavango Delta. The terrain here can feel vast and empty in some areas or dense and teeming with life in others but it is always a thing of beauty. The landscape is at once recognizable as African and will live up to all of your pre-trip expectations.
1. Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is one of the most inspiring and awe-inspiring wilderness locations in Africa, if not the entire planet. The Delta is a truely unspoiled wilderness with terrain ranging from dry grasslands to swamps. Safaris and game watching are the most popular activities in the park and possible animals to be sighted include cheetahs, zebra, giraffes, elephants, crocodiles and rhinos to name only a few. Trips should be properly planned because, although the terrain here is always stunning, the seasons can dramatically effect your chances of seeing certain animals.
2. Moremi Game Reserve
Voted the best game reserve in the African continent in 2008, this park has a lot going for it. It is the first reserve that was solely founded by local residents who were growing ever more concerened about natural and man-made threats to the local enviroment and wildlife. Situated on the east side of the Okavango Delta, the reserve offers some of the most stunning scenery in the country and boasts an equally impressive ecosystem. Many tourists choose to visit the park by self-drive campervan but the park also has a number of great campsites.
3.Maun
Maun is often used by tourists as a stepping stone for the Okavango Delta but it has enough about it to merit a few nights stay. The hotels, restaurants and tourist amenities here are some of the best in the country, largely due to the fact that the city is the main tourist stop in the country. Whilst the town itself does not have much going for it, it still attracts a wide range of people from luxury safari travelers to volounteers. There are some great campsites that are located by the river, providing a great place to stay for a few nights.

4. Gaborone
The city of Gaborone is the largest in Botswana and also its capital. The modern buildings of Gaborone set against the tropical backdrops of this African nation are an unusual sight and despite its size, there are not too many reasons to visit the city. The large residential areas are supplemented by a few decent hotels and restaurants. The modern feel of the city is reinforced by its lack of history but it is certainly paving the way for the countries future and for this reason it is a good place to experience the vibe of 21st Century Botswana.
5.Chobe National Park
This game reserve is the third largest in Botswana but it has one of the largest concentrations of rare game animals in the continent of Africa. The national park takes its name from the Chobe River which, at first glance is guaranteed to take your breathe away. As well as being a beautiful sight, the river supports an ecosystem of rare and exotic creatures including birds, elephants, lions, giraffes, baboons and buffalo. During the winter season it is possible to see a herd of hundreds of elephants at a time; a truely once in a lifetime experience.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to describe the entire country of Botswana as a national park. Even the spaces between designated parks are wild and free, and you’ll find warthog trotting through the towns, big old bull elephant wandering across the highways and even wild dog between farms. So, with all this open space and wildlife, where is the best place to go to see it all? Our Botswana country guide will help you find the answer.

Generally speaking, Botswana has three main areas; the wet and wild regions of northern Botswana along the Chobe River and Okavango Delta, the vast Central Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans, and the southern Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park that spills over into South Africa. All these areas are beautiful in their own way, and provide something a little different; so let’s get into what makes each space special…

The North

Northern Botswana is the wet region of the country, crisscrossed by swamps and rivers and wetlands. The Chobe and the Zambezi rivers intersect in the north-east corner at the famous Kazungula border—the meeting point between four countries; Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Up here, the main safari areas are Chobe National Park, the infamous Okavango Delta (including the Moremi Game Reserve) and Linyanti, all of which combine excellently with Victoria Falls in either Zimbabwe or Zambia.

How do I do it?

The springboard to safaris in the north are the towns of Kasane and Maun. Kasane is perfectly situated to combine jumps between Victoria Falls and the Chobe National Park. You can spend a few days marvelling at wildlife along the winding Chobe River, with its large, super-herds of elephants, and then hop over the border to see the famous Victoria Falls in all its magic. It is also possible to take trips overland into the Savuti, or down into the Linyanti swamps. The only way into the heart of Okavango Delta is by small plane, and the springboard into the Delta is the town of Maun. From Maun, it’s a short flight into one of the many isolated camps within the wetland. If you are in the mood for driving yourself, then you can head into the Moremi Game Reserve from Maun, and skirt round the eastern fringe of the delta, camping or lodging as you wish.

Where do I start?

If you want to combine pretty much everything we’ve mentioned above then look no further than our A classic journey through Botswana. This journey will lead you through the Okavango Delta, Linyanti, Chobe and finish with the spectacular Victoria Falls. Expect magnificent game viewing and a fortitude of water-based activities in Botswana and at the falls you’ll discover a neat blend of beautiful lodges, jaw-dropping scenery and daredevil adventure activities, something for everyone!

WHY BOTSWANA IS THE BEST TOURISM DESTINATION

Matthew Phillips of Lonely Planet, Katherine Wills of Guardian UK and Emma Ledger of The Independent UK explaining why they like Botswana as their best tourism destination, furthermore why Botswana is rated as the best place/country to visit

Top 10 Tourist Destinations in Botswana

10. Okavango Delta
Arguably one of the most beautiful places to visit in Africa, the Okavango Delta is actually the world’s largest inland delta. It’s an oasis of islands, wildlife and lush green vegetation located in the middle of the dry unforgiving Kalahari Desert. Make sure you go on a unique a safari tour and spot wildlife from the safety of a traditional canoe (a mokoro) and then camp overnight. See Sanctuary Retreats for more details.

09. Kalahari Desert
Part of the huge sand basin that reaches from the Orange River up to Angola, this is where vast expanses of sand masses were created by the erosion of soft stone formations. The terracotta dunes have been shaped by wind and have a surreal, other-worldly beauty. Also visit for the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, one of the world’s largest game reserves. It’s not as accessible as the other parks but its remote location ensures it’s far less touristy.

08. Makgadikgadi Pans
Another place with an unearthly beauty is the Makgadikgadi pans, the largest salt pans in the world. Located in the middle of the dry savanna of northeastern Botswana, it’s the remains a huge lake which dried up thousands of years ago. The salt-encrusted pans are flat and arid and come complete with a skyline which appears to go on forever. Camping safaris to spot the resident zebra, wildebeest their predators are a good option for more adventurous travellers.

07. Nxai Pan National Park
Nearby this national park consists of Nxai Pan, which is one of the Makgadikgadi Pan salt flats. Characterised by sand dunes, vast salt pans, the famous Baines baobab trees it’s a beautiful place which of course offers excellent opportunities to see bird and wildlife. Open all-year round, it’s located in northeastern Botswana so it’s easy to combine a visit with the nearby Okavango Delta and the Chobe.

06. Linyanti Wildlife Reserve
One of the most exclusive safari areas in Africa, this place caters to the well-heeled adventurous traveller. The peaceful private reserve covers some 308,000 acres and can be found in the North East of the country. The area is fed by the Kwando River ensuring plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities – it’s renowned for its many Lion prides and also being home to one of Botswana’s largest Elephant populations.

05. Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park
This is a sprawling conversation area which covers over 3.6 million hectares and is known for its red sand dunes and dry riverbeds. It straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana and is an excellent place for wildlife watching. Expect to see predators such as cheetahs, lions, leopards and hyenas, migratory herds of springbok and wildebeest and over 200 species of birds (including vultures and eagles).

04. Kubu Island
Kubu Island is easily one of the most beautiful places to visit in Botswana and was once described by Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson as the most astonishing place he’d ever been! It’s actually a dry granite rock island engulfed by a white sea of salt in the Makgadikgadi Pan. The island is now protected as a national monument, with visit proceeds going towards helping the local community.

03. Moremi Wildlife Reserve
Arguably the most beautiful wildlife sanctuary in Africa, this game reserve lies in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Mopane tree canopies dominate the dry landscapes and the rest of the area is a combination of floodplain grasses, riverine woodland and permanent delta. The reserve supports one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Africa and includes endangered wild dogs, herds of elephants and the ‘Big Five.’

02. Chobe River
This is an integral part of the Botswana safari experience (which can be combined easily with the Okavango Delta and Kalahari). The Chobe River runs along the northern border of Chobe National Park and a river safari – or cruise – is one of your best options to explore the area. It’s a place abundant with wildlife but try to visit during the dry season (April to October) when when game concentrations are at their highest. Expect hippos, buffalo, cheetahs crocodiles, antelope species and huge herds of elephants.

01. Khama Rhino Sanctuary
Established in 1992, this is a community based wildlife project which was set up to help protect and restore the vanishing rhinoceros. It’s a peaceful spot where sustainable tourism is encouraged – there are even onsite chalet and camping facilities where you can stay overnight. Covering around 8585 hectares, the haven provides protection for both black and white rhino as well as over 30 other animal species and around 230 species of birds.

Botswana: Where to go and what to see

Virtually synonymous with the Kalahari Desert, much of Botswana is flat and dry, covered in thorny acacia trees and home to enormous salt pans and rolling grasslands. Rainfall is highest in northern Botswana where vast open woodlands dominate the environment and several globally important wetland habitats - the Okavango Delta, the Linyanti Swamps and the Chobe River - support huge numbers of animals.
Botswana is a haven for wildlife and several of its protected areas - the Chobe National Park, the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve in particular - rank among Africa's best game-viewing destinations. Botswana's Kalahari parks are some of the wildest and least developed in the region but offer excellent opportunities for game viewing, especially in early summer when several local zebra migrations occur.

Botswana's wildlife highlights include Africa's greatest concentrations of elephant, fantastic bird watching, abundant predators and the continent's largest population of African wild dog. Botswana's lions are particularly famous for their size and their ability to prey on large animals such as hippo, buffalo and even young elephants.

The evergreen jewel of the Okavango Delta is at the heart of Botswana’s safari attractions, flanked in the east by the rolling savannah of the Savuti and the teeming elephant paradise of the Chobe.
